At first it's slow and blurry because James is getting flashbacks but he's in denial, and it becomes clearer and faster after the Pyramid Heads fight, when he accepts the truth. Disabling the monsters' sounds in the Lakeview employee section won't trigger James' alert animation, re-enabling it triggers the animation, and so on. Interacting with a red square stops the tic. Perhaps what helps is the feeling of "someone groping around his skull" that he mentions in the opening..?
