New Fable 5 beats Opus 4.8 on real world physics simulations We gave both models the same three prompts and asked them to build self contained HTML5 sims with real physics and no libraries: 1. Chaotic double pendulum 2. Galton board 3. Water in a spinning drum (WCSPH) Generation cost Fable 5: $3.35 on 68.7k tokens, time 14m 47s Opus 4.8: $0.93 on 38.9k tokens, time 8m 10s Fable clearly did better on the water simulation, producing a much more solid and continuous body of water. Opus left larger gaps near the walls, scattered particles around the scene, and struggled to keep the fluid stable.

Water simulation has always been the holy grail of FX, requiring an incredible amount of computation to get right. For Battleship (2012), ILM had to reinvent their water systems to allow them to be able to deliver the show with it's plethora of shots in water. The alien ships are hundreds of feet long and therefore displace massive amounts of water. This, coupled with them making aggressive movements meant that hundreds of millions of droplets of water had to be simulated per shot to get a believable look of water interaction. Before their new water systems, artists were only able to get "1-2 simulations done per day", but with the new system they were able to "do many simulations per day", increasing the iterations and therefore the creative freedom and expression for the artists. ILM has since reworked their water systems multiple times, now being more powerful and accurate than ever, utilizing more powerful hardware and more accurate and efficient simulation algorithms. Today, water simulation is something that can be done a lot easier than before, even being able to do it in real-time with tools such as Unreal Engine and LiquiGen. Day 049, orbit 0759 – Another experiment, and another timelapse! This time, I’m working with the Fluid Science Laboratory (FSL), one of the science facilities inside ESA’s Columbus module. The experiment is called PASTA-3 and investigates the formation and evolution of emulsions over time when there is no gravity to interfere. Emulsions are mixtures of two or more liquids that do not usually mix, such as oil and water. During this session, I installed 3 experiment containers 🧪 with new samples inside the FSL. Each PASTA sample has a different concentration of surfactant (an agent that helps liquids mix) and Xanthan Gum in addition to a water and oil mixture. This experiment helps scientists better understand and model the fundamental physics of emulsions. That knowledge has numerous applications on Earth, including: - improving food quality and shelf life (milk 🥛, dough, mayonnaise, candy…), - enhancing the stability and effectiveness of medicines (including vaccines 💉) and cosmetics, - optimising processes in industrial and advanced manufacturing sectors (oil 🛢️, chemicals …). "Like in this version of reality, in this layer of reality, if a simulation is going in a boring direction, we stop spending effort on it." Boring simulations got cancelled. Interesting ones got renewed. Then, he said, the corollary appeared. "They particularly seem to like interesting outcomes that are ironic." ✨ I've been using #Unity3D for 12 years. ✨ I'm using Blender's GeoNodes for a procedural mesh that's realtime-animated with a custom shader in Unity. ---(reminiscing, reflection follows)-- At some point, you realize it's 'all' states, relationships, and data/information. What is, isn't, and how they relate, subject to laws, principles. 🌌 Define some latent space -> atomics, data -> simulation/form -> information. Like a grid-texture of pixels that are to mean something, represent something. And they are processed/simulated in some way by some measure. So that you get some transformed, meaningful result. What is possible, here? -- in that space. (by the parameters, and features *defined*). 🧊 Likewise, a 3D field-volume in which things exist, being and not being. It may sound mystical, but I mean it literally: the definition of what things are, and are not, and what that means as a relationship (to something[s]). Take, for example a sphere, or box collider primitive. 🪩 Sphere's and circles are the most simple colliders, involving only a point (where they are) and radius (distance from that point, as a center) to define. 💥 The equations to calculate collisions against and between spheres is also relatively straightforward. Implementation of that is a part of building primitive relationships and definitions for simulations. 🎇 It follows, that for a particle system, the data structure of a single element/particle is (about) some point that simulates in some way. Boids and fluid sims have this in common. It seems this year (so far) has been ~about realizing that (with greater lucidity, at least), and learning it all relates to the nature of the universe.
