Nissan has unveiled its next-gen driver assist AI technology called ProPilot, which the company says will be on par with Tesla's FSD when it is released by March 2028. “We think ours is smarter than Tesla FSD, just not as polished as a product,” said Nissan. I HIGHLY recommend watching (or rewatching) the Former Head of Tesla AI Andrej Karpathy brilliantly explain how Tesla’s Vision approach is the answer to Wide-Scale Global Autonomy on Lex Fridman’s Podcast. Quick Summary: • Extra sensors add cost to the system, and more importantly complexity. They make the software task harder, and increase the cost of all the data pipelines. They add risk and complexity to the supply chain and manufacturing. • Vision is necessary to the task (which almost all agree on) and it should also be sufficient as well. If it is sufficient, the cost of extra sensors and tools outweighs their benefit. • Sensors change as parts change or become available and unavailable. They must be maintained and software adapted to these changes. They must also be calibrated to make fusion work properly. • Having a fleet gathering more data is more important than having more sensors. • Using LiDAR can actually be a liability. • Having to process LIDAR and radar produces a lot of bloat in the code and data pipelines. Andrej predicts other companies will also drop these sensors in time. • Mapping the world and keeping it up to date is much too expensive. You won’t change the world with this limitation, you need to focus on vision which is the most important. The roads are designed to be interpreted with vision.

NEWS: Ford has announced that its upcoming ~$30,000 mid-size electric truck will have 48v architecture and have 15% more aerodynamic efficiency than any other pickup truck on the market today. EV truck info: • LFP battery (prismatic). Structural battery, a first for Ford. LFP Battery made in Michigan. • New regen-braking design that saves $100 in battery cost. • Ford says "if the same battery was married to the aerodynamics of the most aerodynamically efficient mid-size gas truck in the U.S., we believe our new electric truck would have nearly 50 miles or 15% more driving range. And a 30% improvement at highway speeds." • Truck uses unicastings (gigacastings) • Reduces parts by 20% versus a typical vehicle, with 25% fewer fasteners, 40% fewer workstations dock-to dock in the plant & 15% faster assembly time. • Side mirror body size is 20% smaller than a conventional mirror, adding ~1.5 miles of range. • New tire wake design: "We guided the front tire wake directly toward the rear tires, effectively "hiding" the rear wheels." This adds 4.5 miles of range. • Wiring harness is more than 4,000 feet (1.3 kilometers) shorter and 22lbs kilograms lighter than the one used in their first-gen electric SUV. • The new midsize truck is forecasted to have more passenger room than the latest Toyota RAV4, even before you include the frunk and the truck bed. • The new midsize truck will have a targeted 0-60 time of 4.5s. • Completely redesigned EV architecture • Deliveries start in the U.S. in 2027 with a target starting MSRP of $30,000. Ford: "If we succeed, we will have a family of vehicles that we expect to compete on price with the best in the world, including gas vehicles. We used a Formula 1-inspired development cycle to develop this vehicle. We shifted our focus toward a "fail fast, learn faster" mentality."

Elon Musk in a new interview this morning on Tesla FSD: "In terms of having self-driving be ubiquitous, I think we’re making steady progress. The Tesla Full Self-Driving software, which is really just AI and cameras, we don’t use radars or LIDAR or anything like that. It’s really trying to drive the car in the same way that a human drives the car, primarily with vision and with a biological neural net. We take the same approach with our vehicles, which is a digital neural net and cameras. I expect this approach to ultimately be at least an order of magnitude safer than humans driving. It is quite magical because the car feels like it is sentient. It actually feels like it’s alive and you can actually, as we improve the software, feel the sentience growing in the car. We already have some vehicles operating with no people inside with no safety monitors in three cities in Texas and probably will be widespread in the US by the end of this year and hopefully in Israel too" Tesla FSD is beginning to feel more and more sentient with each update, it’s incredible.
