Training Day is 24 years old today. Denzel Washington had played complex characters before, but nothing quite like multi-layered, charismatic and deeply ruthless Detective Alonzo Harris. It's Denzel on a huge scale. He even ad-libbed his "King Kong ain't got shit on me!" line.

25 years ago today, Denzel Washington won an Oscar by losing. Not the fight. The block. Jake takes the money. The neighborhood that used to belong to Alonzo just walks away. And instead of the scripted “I’ll burn this down,” Denzel invents a god: “King Kong ain’t got shit on me.” One take. Improvised. Slightly soft focus. They never shot it again.

Denzel Washington improvised the legendary “King Kong ain’t got shit on me!” line in Training Day. Terry Crews, who appears in the scene, has said he was so captivated watching Denzel that he was barely thinking about acting himself. He was simply watching a master at work. You can feel it in the finished film. One actor delivered an all-time performance, and everyone else in the scene was along for the ride.

Denzel Washington won his only Best Actor award for Training Day One great detail: he improvised the entire “King Kong ain’t got sh*t on me” scene. Afterwards, he walked over to director Antoine Fuqua and said, “Whoo, I don’t know where that came from.”

Denzel Washington & Tony Scott made five films together between 1995 & 2010, and the best of those five films is right here in Man on Fire. I think this might be Denzel at his most ruthless - even more than Training Day & definitely more than American Gangster. Denzel unleashes in the back-half of this movie in such a violent, unforgiving way. Scott pulled the best out of Denzel- and Denzel’s best is all-time great.

Josh Brolin recalls a tense moment on the set of American Gangster when he thought he might have to “fight Denzel Washington.” “You know, Denzel was a hero of mine. Denzel and I did American Gangster together, and Denzel wouldn’t look at me. I did this scene with Denzel, and he had reworked the scene. He didn’t change any lines, he just reworked the scene. ‘Lines here, you say your line - You hold that line until the end - I said, ‘Okay.’ And then, as we're going through the scenes…Denzel Washington man, my hero….and I forgot a line. I put my hand on his shoulder, and I asked for the line. And he hit my hand away. He said, ‘Don’t you ever fucking touch me.’ And I was like, ‘Is he in character?’ - I was thinking, ‘Holy fuck, I’m going to fight Denzel Washington. This is amazing.’ And he looked at me right in the eye, and then I said, ‘Are we okay?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, we’re okay.’ I still don’t know to this day, because every time I see Denzel, he puts his arms out and gives me the biggest hug. And I’m just like, ‘I don’t understand actors. I know I’m an actor, but I don’t understand.’”

Denzel Washington improvised the famous “King Kong ain’t got shit on me” monologue at the end of Training Day. But according to Ethan Hawke, the performance was the culmination of months of preparation. Hawke explains: “We would be doing ride-arounds in the back of these cop cars, watching these arrests or talking to some of these people who really lived the life that we were doing, and they would say something really funny. And I would just see Denzel glance at me, and I realized, ‘Oh shit, that just went in the computer.’ And then it would come out in a scene two months later—that line that that guy said... When people say ‘improvised,’ they think, ‘Oh, just some magic lightning bolt happened.’ It’s months of work. He’s just supposed to yell, ‘Fuck you,’ or something as I’m walking away, and this monologue flew out of his mouth: ‘You’re gonna be playing for the Pelican Bay All-Stars. This is my neighborhood. Y’all just live here. King Kong ain’t got nothing on me.’ It was all his prep. Here’s a line that didn’t make the movie. Here’s another line that didn’t make the movie. Here’s another thing I wanted to say.’ And he just started throwing them all out there. To just be there that day, to watch somebody working on a different level than everybody else… he was amazing. Amazing.”

Denzel Washington’s epic monologue towards the end of Training Day was largely improvised on set. Director Antoine Fuqua was so blown away by his performance, he says he thinks he "forgot to yell cut”. He explains… “That’s Denzel. He was just in his zone. I mean, that was one of those moment...people talk about AI. Those are the moments where you go...it's a great tool. It's gonna be a great tool, I think...but the emotion, and the moment that an actor can bring - you can't predict that. That's something that's just inside of Denzel. And when that came out, I was just like - I hope I got it. I just turned to my operator - who was shaking- I looked over at the guy - I was like, “please tell me you got that.” Because that was the take. That was it. There was no other take - I mean, how do you tell an actor like that, that that wasn't good enough? …He walked over to me, and he just had this look in his eyes. I was like, “you good?” He said, “you good?” I said, “Yeah…” Some of that was in the script, but he flipped it the way he did it. "Putting cases on all you." He kind of added some things in there. And then he just went into a whole other zone with the whole King Kong thing- with Pelican Bay - Denzel started that. That was Denzel. That was him, man. He just kind of lit up, and I think I forgot to yell cut. I was just watching it, because everybody started walking away, and I'm just watching him, and then he lights a cigarette - and he's talking - and I'm just watching him. I think at some point he probably looked at me like, you going to cut? And I'm like, “oh yeah, yeah, cut.” He was still in it. That's the thing with Denzel. He was so Alonso…I'm just watching him for a while because I didn't know what else he was going to do. It was just so magical. And then I think he looked up at me and I was like, “Okay, cut, cut.”

I had dared Hon Hon. Mubarak Munyagwa to show me even a video of him drawing just 17 people on his presidential trail. Today at Jajja Kasuku’s vigil in Migadde, we crossed paths …and he made it clear how deeply that challenge bruised him, calling it disrespectful on a World Cup scale. One thing is obvious though: his anger toward King Saha hasn’t cooled one bit.

Yeah, they're cornerstones of teen superhero stories and can give a lot of hindsight on the characters' psychi... Plus, it's hilarious and relatable to the kids, I mean Ben Tennyson is basically a demigod and has fought demons left and right without fear, but he ain't got the balls to go against his mother, like a lof of good guys.

After nearly 24 years, Officer Jason Skalicky has completed his final shift with the #FargoPD, on Friday, September 11, 2026, closing out a career dedicated to serving the residents and visitors of Fargo. Officer Skalicky started his career in patrol, where he spent nine years before becoming a detective. During those nine years as a detective, Officer Skalicky served on every team within the division before making his way back to patrol for the final nearly six years of his career, most recently on Day Shift. Along the way, Officer Skalicky helped mentor numerous officers, sharing his experience and helping those around him grow. But when asked what he enjoyed most about his career, Officer Skalicky didn't point to a particular assignment or accomplishment. He talked about the people. The officers he worked alongside every day, and the relationships built over nearly 24 years. He was grateful for the opportunity to serve a city like Fargo, where he says he always felt the support of the community. Thank you, Officer Skalicky, for nearly 24 years of service, friendship and commitment to the Fargo community. We are grateful for the time you gave to #FargoPD and wish you nothing but the best in your retirement from law enforcement.

The most dangerous mistake a cynical person can make is assuming everyone else is just as corruptible as they are. In Training Day (2001), Alonzo Harris arranges for Jake Hoyt to be killed because Jake has become a liability. To Alonzo, loyalty is temporary, morality is a tool, and every person has a price. If someone stands in his way, he finds a way to remove them. Jake operates by a different code. Earlier that day, he risked himself to protect a young woman from an assault. He had nothing to gain, no audience to impress, and no guarantee that anyone would ever know what he did. He acted because someone needed help. That difference becomes the reason he survives. When Smiley discovers that Jake saved his young cousin, he spares his life. Alonzo had spent the entire day teaching Jake that survival required abandoning his principles. Then Alonzo's own plan collapsed because Jake had refused to abandon his. That's the irony: Alonzo treats decency as a weakness because he cannot imagine doing good without an ulterior motive. Jake's morality isn't a strategy for survival. It's a principle he follows even when survival is uncertain. Alonzo knows how to manipulate people. Jake reminds us that not every act of goodness is a transaction, and that a man who understands every price can still fail to recognize genuine worth.

"See you only got to fuck up once; be a little slow, be a little late. Just once. And how you ain't never gonna be slow? Never be late? You can't plan for no shit like this; it's life! Yeah... scares me." My favorite line from Avon, since it foreshadows the Barksdale Crew's downfall, but also because it humanizes him masterfully. I always liked the fact that Avon had some humanity in him, unlike Marlo and Stringer. Avon was ruthless but wasn't totally wicked. He had a code. This is probably one of the most realest scenes in the Wire.🎬🍿

Tyrese Maxey says Joel Embiid believed in him even before he played his first NBA game: “He was the first person NBA like player-wise to believe in me. Like, because I played against them in like practice a couple times, I was on like the penny group like the third group and I was like, we won a couple games like a little pick and roll games and he was like okay he is kind of good. Then I got to the second unit we won a couple games he was like, okay put him on the first unit let’s see what he does. I was so nervous playing with him the first time. Like I don’t know what to do. But first time I got on a plane he is like sit right here. Sit by me. And I’m like, Okay, all right. I guess I knew I didn’t have a choice. I was a rookie. But he told me like, you’re going to be a star in this league, bro. You’re going to be really good. You’re going to be this. You’re going to be that, I’m like, bro, I haven’t even played a game. I played zero basketball games.” (Via NBA on NBC and Peacock)
