These new arrivals are part of the SAFE American Red Wolf program—a collaborative effort to save the most endangered wolf species on the planet. Zoo Knoxville is proud to be part of this essential conservation work. With fewer than 20 Red Wolves in the wild and under 300 in human care, every pup counts. GENETIC MIRACLE: DIRE WOLVES BORN FROM 72,000-YEAR-OLD DNA The process began with two dire wolf fossils: a 13,000-year-old bone and a 72,000-year-old inner ear. Scientists extracted viable DNA, sequenced their genomes, and identified the gene differences that made dire wolves unique from modern wolves. With that blueprint, Colossal edited 14 genes in gray wolf DNA—adjusting for size, coat, vocalization, and other distinct traits. That edited DNA was placed into egg cells, grown into embryos, and implanted into surrogate hound dogs. On October 1, 2024, twin pups Romulus and Remus were born. Source: Time

Neat footage of a black wolf, a fairly rare observation in our area where 98-99% of wolves are gray. We actually collared this wolf (now dubbed Wolf G11E) later in the summer, the first black wolf we ever collared on our project. As we knew when we collared him, G11E was not part of a pack but rather a lone wolf wandering around, which is pretty common for 1-2 year old males like G11E.

Here's a simplified guide on Yesod Phase 1 (Extreme and below) : - There are 6 pillars, you only need to hit 5. - Every single pillar destroyed will fill up the bar at bottom left which will give you buffs. How to know which pillars to hit first? Look at the glow on the ground, if it glows blue you hit red pillar. It glows red, you hit blue pillar. Then alternate from there. - Alternate the pillars between blue, red, blue, red, blue OR red, blue, red, blue, red - DO NOT destroy two or more pillar at once or you will get stunned (beware of AoE students) -Every pillar you destroy gives you back 3.6 cost so manage your cost properly and don't overcap (buffs and heals) Once Yesod hand hits you and you see the shield from the last pillar, that's when you go all in and spam skills (max buffs 5 bar at bottom left) Below is a sample clip on how to do it on first sequence of Phase 1, (where Yesod hits you with his right arm) so do blue, red, blue, red, blue. The second sequence of Phase 1 (where Yesod hits you with his left arm) you need to hit (red, blue, red, blue, red). The U.S. is facing a blood shortage crisis. The American Red Cross declared the national blood supply crisis this week, urging people to sign up for immediate blood donations. The organization is the largest single provider of blood in the U.S., and they now have less than a one-day supply of type O-positive blood. In a press release, the Red Cross said extreme heat, poor air quality and widespread foodborne illnesses are all contributing to a four-year summer low for blood donations. The last time the American Red Cross declared a national blood supply crisis was in January 2022 during the COVID pandemic. The Red Cross is urging all eligible donors to give blood as soon as possible, especially those with type O blood. Visit or call 1-800-Red Cross for more information. This video gives a rare glimpse into the "fishy" proclivities of wolves in our area. The video was taken in spring just a short distance from a creek wolves have fished at for many years. This past spring was the 10th year we have documented wolves hunting and catching fish—a behavior that had not been documented in boreal systems such as ours until our work, in part, because it is a tough behavior to observe. What is particularly fascinating is that this wolf was not only carrying a fish but carrying two of them. This is interesting because when we captured this behavior on video for the first time in 2018, we observed a wolf fishing, drop them on the creek bank, and wade back in to continue fishing. I.e., the wolf was not immediately consuming the fish it caught but rather fishing while the fishing was hot, and then once the fishing cooled down, would consume the fish. And this video seems to provide some additional evidence that it might be a widespread strategy wolves use. Two other interesting tidbits from this video: 1.) The wolf that dropped the fish was a yearling wolf. The wolf that grabbed the fish at the end was a different wolf. More specifically, the breeding female of the Half-Moon Pack and the older sister of the yearling wolf. 2.) Surprisingly, the black bear seemed very perplexed at finding this fish, and just left it alone without even taking a little nibble. We would have expected a bear to readily take a free meal like this but apparently not. We have collected of detailed information on how, when, where, and why wolves hunt fish in our area. What happens when two wolves find a badger in the woods…some trail camera gold!! Moral of the story: you just don’t mess around with badgers! For a bit of context, the pair of wolves here are the Blood Moon Pack (the pack was only 2 wolves last winter). The breeding female of the Blood Moon Pack, Wolf Y5E, was killed by the Biondich Pack in late January 2025. This left the breeding male, Wolf Y1T, by himself as the Blood Moon Pack was just a breeding pair. However, Y1T found a new mate by early March or so. The first wolf in the video is his new mate who he had been traveling with for the past 1.5 months (this video was taken in mid-April 2025). The Blood Moon Pack did not produce pups in 2025 because the mating season had passed by the time Y1T found his new mate. So, the Biondich Pack effectively prevented their neighbor, the Blood Moon Pack, from reproducing. Anyway, the second wolf in the video is Wolf Y1T who walks up to give the badger a little sniff!

Incapable of writing anything less than a thesis about an all-time first trip to Red Rocks for three nights of one of my goats MARTIN GARRIX Red Rocks has been at the top of my bucket list since first getting into dance music. And when Garrix announced he’d be playing there for the first time, I knew if these shows couldn’t convince me to finally go, idk what would People always ask if it’s worth sending every night for these multi-night Garrix runs. The short answer is yes, and Red Rocks was a prime example of why. The reimagined Ushuaïa 2018 production was a masterpiece (shoutout to the legends Gabe Fraboni, Zis Ankone, and Andrea Voglino just to name a few), three different/peak Garrix tracklists (plus a new intro just for Red Rocks), the crowds were electric, and we got an Avengers-level support list (shoutout Mesto, AFROJACK, marshmello, and Alesso). The shows somehow kept getting better, especially Friday with our tailgate B2B, Alessorrix 2.0, and my favorite of the three Garrix sets As for Red Rocks itself, it was so surreal finally experiencing it in person. Everything from the view with the city lights in the back to the crisp sound (even being higher up night 1) to the setting as a whole came together for a perfect first impression. And despite the walk of death from the bottom to the top of the stairs at the end of each night, I left Red Rocks on Friday fully understanding why I people always say it’s their favorite place on Earth As always, I could yap about this for hours but I’ll end this caption with a thank you to MARTIN GARRIX, the STMPD RCRDS team, the Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre team, and everyone else involved in making last week happen

🐾❤️ We've got some exciting news! Zoo Knoxville is thrilled to announce the birth of two male red panda cubs to parents Sisu and Doofah! Born on June 7, these tiny brothers are healthy, growing well, and spending their first weeks safely tucked away with mom in their nest box at the Boyd Family Red Panda Village. Our animal care team is closely monitoring their growth while giving Sisu the space she needs to raise her cubs naturally. This marks back-to-back years of red panda births at Zoo Knoxville and another important milestone for the zoo's nationally recognized red panda conservation program. The cubs aren't ready to meet guests just yet, but we'll be following their journey every step of the way, from the nest box to the nursery, and eventually to the exciting day Sisu decides it's time to introduce them to the outdoors. We're excited to share their journey with you. The first few months of a red panda's life are filled with both exciting milestones and natural challenges, and we want you to experience those moments alongside us. Our hope is that by watching these cubs grow, you'll develop a deeper appreciation for red pandas and join us in protecting their future.

Some beautiful footage from the dam of a remote beaver pond in early spring this year. But this is more than just pretty footage...the footage highlights an interesting dynamic in the wolf packs in this area...because all the wolves in the video belong to different packs but they all have a history with one another. Notably, this pond is in an area of overlap between the Half-Moon and Lightfoot Pack territories. The first wolf in the video is the new breeding male of the Half-Moon Pack (now dubbed Wolf Y15C after we collared him this spring). He and his mate kicked out Wolf V094, the longstanding breeding male of the Half-Moon Pack, in Fall 2024. And Wolf V094 just so happens to be the 2nd wolf in this video, and Wolf Y15C’s mate happens to be V094’s daughter. Small world! Wolf V094 was a lone wolf at the time this video was taken but he joined the Peatlands Pack later this past summer. But you can tell he is getting to be an old fellow. And then the last wolf on camera is the breeding female of the Lightfoot Pack (Wolf B3S). She recently became the breeding female of the Lightfoot Pack after kicking out her mother in Fall 2024. And as it turns out, her mate is the son of Wolf V094. For a few months last winter, V094 actually traveled around with this female and his son in the Lightfoot territory but then for whatever reason, moved on. Now, as for the name, let’s just say someone on our crew was out doing fieldwork near this pond a few years ago and had a little issue with their bear spray...it was a long walk out for them with some blurry eyes that were feeling the burn...
