Ukraine has finished its internal screening process for EU legislation – and we did it faster than anyone else before us. We did it well. We are fully ready to open Cluster 1 in the EU membership talks – the “Fundamentals” cluster. We need real progress on this.

This week saw the #EUCO decision to open Ukraine’s EU accession talks. We worked actively for it all year. In the coming days, Ukraine and the European Commission will formally begin the screening process to assess the correspondence of Ukrainian legislation with EU legislation. We are also preparing for the work on Ukraine’s negotiation framework, which we expect to be adopted in the spring. The negotiation process will not be easy, but the important thing is that we already have historical certainty: Ukraine will always be part of our common European home. I am grateful to everyone who joined forces with us and helps bring the required European decisions closer: all politicians, civil society leaders, and people in different countries who have equal faith in Ukraine and in Europe.

20 years ago today, #Estonia joined the EU. We knew we did not join a ready-made organisation – the #EU is constantly developing and we've gladly helped shape it. Our accession has been a success story. It now allows us to help others, including #Ukraine, on their way to join.

I met with Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski 🇵🇱🇪🇺. We discussed the attack of Russian drones on Poland. Ukraine is ready to share its experience, assist with the training of Polish military personnel, and jointly build a defense system. We are grateful to Poland for its support from the very beginning of the war. We are close neighbors, and in times of such dangers it is vital to stand together. We discussed pressure on Russia, joint defense production, and Ukraine’s EU membership. It is very important to open the first negotiating cluster for Ukraine and Moldova with the support of all 27 votes. We also spoke about the SAFE program and the possibility of using the funds to produce interceptor drones. I thank Poland for its readiness to implement this. We agreed to work through all the issues at the team level.

Brexiter Patrick Minford, "People are saying if we leave the EU it will be disastrous" "We have done a simulation of leaving the EU and the first thing that comes out is an 8% drop in the cost of living on day one" "We don't need to do trade agreements with anybody else.. They're not necessary for our well being in terms of leaving the EU" This was in 2015... Now in 2024, did anyone feel that 8% drop in the cost of living on day one, or any day since?

Tomorrow is an important day. We are anticipating a historic conclusion from the European Union—a report on Ukraine's implementation of the European Commission's recommendations. And we are already planning our next steps following this report. Our legislative efforts and the strengthening of state institutions. Ukraine has already come a long way toward stronger ties with the European Union. We are fully aware that EU membership relies on a political decision shared by all EU members that want to see a new state join, but it also relies on the candidate state itself and its work to approximate and adapt EU standards and community norms. Ukraine will join the EU. And we will achieve this, in particular, as a result of our state's internal transformation that is completely consistent with the interests of our people. The EU represents economic security and social stability for Ukraine, and Ukraine represents the strengthening of the entire EU community. And it is critical that the Ukrainian parliament continues to support the legislative efforts required for our European integration.

In my first General Affairs Council today, I will meet with the Ministers who decide on important enlargement conclusions. There is a new dynamic in the enlargement process and we are making progress. Yesterday, we closed 3 chapters with Montenegro and today we open one cluster with Albania. Congratulations!

"My goal is to open up a concrete prospect of joining the European Union for Moldova, Ukraine, and the Western Balkan states right now. We haven't admitted any new members to the EU for 13 years, despite having promised membership to a number of European countries. There are now two options. Either we renege on these promises—and that's impossible. In my view, that would be the worst decision for everyone. Or we acknowledge that the process takes time. It's complex, but we must continue to move forward step by step and take the next step—providing this form of associate membership. It could be called something else, but we're talking about membership in the European Union without voting rights in its institutions, yet with such close integration with the EU that full membership would then be the next logical step."
