A strong summit in Brussels. We opened our first negotiating cluster last week, and today we took stock of where we are — on reforms, economic development, and security and defence cooperation. Moldova is doing its part, and we count on the 27 EU member states to do the same.

What is happening today – the opening of the first cluster in the accession negotiations for Ukraine and Moldova – sends a clear message that Europe’s progress cannot be stopped. We have worked hard to reach this moment. Over the past years, Ukraine and Moldova have taken important steps together. And it is especially symbolic that I am speaking to you from Chișinău today – on my way to France for the G7 Summit. Our neighborhood with Moldova is strong. We value this visit on such a meaningful day, when we remember the Chornobyl disaster and the colossal solidarity and selflessness of our people, which made it possible to protect our country and our entire region, all of Europe and the world from an even greater radiation catastrophe. Today, Maia and I focused primarily on issues of security, our cross-border cooperation, the protection and development of infrastructure and energy, and we also had a very substantive discussion on our shared path toward the European Union. We are now working to ensure that all six clusters are opened as soon as possible and that EU membership becomes our shared success – for Ukraine, Moldova, and the entire European Union. Ukraine will continue to support Moldova on security issues – in particular with regard to the Transnistrian region. We are also ready to further develop our trilateral formats together with Romania. I personally thank Maia and all of Moldova for supporting Ukraine and for cooperation that strengthens our entire region.

Through SACEUR’s assessment of readiness, deterrence and defence, and SACT’s views on near and far future, we communicate to our citizens and the rest of the world that we are ready for the present and we are prepared for whatever lies on the horizon. Our focus on partnerships, from across the globe, also demonstrates our understanding that our security is global and interconnected, and #NATO must reflect on this reality. And our support for #Ukraine through initiatives like NSATU, JATEC and PURL, continues to grow, showing that our unity and determination are more than words.
