Ukraine got rocked tonight. Hit after hit after hit, largest attack we've seen in some time. Gerans are still landing. Ukraine tried to strike back with a small-ish cope drone wave (some possibly from the Baltics), but doesn't seem to have had had any success worth noting.⬇️ What does this portend for ground operations? Objectively nothing - the Russians have launched many large air raids before with no significant followup on the ground. We'll know the they are moving on the ground when they move on the ground. With that being said, the situation is ripe for significant moves and Putin has given the order to secure a buffer zone across Chernigov, Sumy and Kharkov - a move that would double the length of the active front - so it's almost a given at this point that we're looking at the run-up to a major offensive.

Chinese Swarm Drone Systems: 48 and 96 Drones Some time ago, I wrote about the evolution of autonomous systems and how only the Chinese were truly making progress in this field. After starting serial production of the Swarm-2, which features 48 drones and real-time tracking, they are now testing a version with 96 drones. These are divided into three categories: reconnaissance, jamming, and attack. Each drone can carry a variety of payloads, including electro-optical reconnaissance, strike munitions, and relay communications. They can be flexibly combined into different operational groupings, forming multifunctional swarms capable of complex missions. These drones have an individual range of 15 to 50 km, but the manufacturer claims that by maintaining a swarm network communication, this range is significantly extended. This strongly reinforces what we discussed a while back: that future wars will be dominated by drone systems that will severely delay any ground troop advancement, as already evidenced by the conflict in Ukraine.

Medvedev and Peskov started making assurances that there will be no mobilization in Russia and Russia is not preparing for one. Very recently, I wrote that one of the reasons for restricting the internet and social media in Russia is preparation for mobilization. Yes, there is an anti-drone logic behind it, but it seems much more like part of a stricter mobilization model: first, the Russian state suppresses communications and limits access to keep people within a controlled digital environment, and only afterward will it conduct a new wave of mobilization with less chaos and less room for resistance. Russia is preparing for a larger war and a broader mobilization. For the process to go smoothly, the regime needs to reduce information leaks, make summonses digital and unavoidable, and narrow the space for evasion and escape. That's why Russia has already launched electronic summonses - to make it harder for men to avoid conscription. We don't know exactly where the Kremlin will deploy the next wave of cannon fodder. But we do know that Putin is already expanding the army to 1.5 million active personnel, and the Kremlin has openly justified this by citing threats on the Western flank and the need to create new structures in the northwest.

Ordinary Ukrainian cities: Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnipro. Ordinary life, and Russian strikes that should never have happened. Every day in Ukraine is marked by large-scale attacks with strike drones, mostly “Shaheds”—it was Iran that taught Russia how to produce such drones. Today, more than a dozen drones have already hit our Kharkiv, one of the largest cities in Ukraine. Ordinary residential buildings have been damaged, and so far 8 people have been wounded, including a 12-year-old girl. No country should have to go through this. And against this backdrop, speaking about easing pressure on Russia, lifting sanctions, and so on, is definitely inappropriate and unhelpful. Russia kills people every day and drags out this war. The U.S. proposal for an unconditional ceasefire has been on the table for half a month now. Pressure on Russia is needed to save lives and to make diplomacy work faster and more effectively. Without pressure on Russia, there will be no result.

Every day in Ukraine is marked by large-scale attacks with strike drones, mostly “Shaheds”—it was Iran that taught Russia how to produce such drones. Today, more than a dozen drones have already hit our Kharkiv, one of the largest cities in Ukraine. Ordinary residential buildings have been damaged, and so far 8 people have been wounded, including a 12-year-old girl. No country should have to go through this. And against this backdrop, speaking about easing pressure on Russia, lifting sanctions, and so on, is definitely inappropriate and unhelpful. Russia kills people every day and drags out this war. The U.S. proposal for an unconditional ceasefire has been on the table for half a month now. Pressure on Russia is needed to save lives and to make diplomacy work faster and more effectively. Without pressure on Russia, there will be no result.
