Unitree $6500 hand Unitree has launched a humanoid dexterous hand called the Dex5-S, featuring direct drive, backdrivability, 22 DoF, a maximum payload of 2 kg, and an aluminum-alloy design. Clearly, this hand isn’t built for heavy lifting. It’s designed for dexterous manipulation and precision tasks.

"Clearly, this hand isn’t built for heavy lifting. It’s designed for dexterous manipulation and precision tasks" Doesn't even have movable MCP joints.

22 DoF, 2 kg payload, i'd want it plugging cables into a rack... backdrivable so a missed port just pushes the finger back. Cheap enough to break a few

Backdrivability is the spec that matters most here. Direct-drive joints that can be safely teleoperated mean you can collect manipulation demos through the hand itself — which is exactly the data bottleneck for dexterous policies.

Dexterous hands under 7k change the whole math for hardware teams. Manipulation is finally getting solved at the edge.

The interesting number to see would be that how many of those joints have a motor behind them. Unitree's own sheet for the earlier Dex5-1 reads its 20 DoF as '16 active + 4'. Four move without being driven, which is normal for hands but changes what a joint count tells you.
