📺 VHS and CRT simulator for Unity. 🔴🟢🔵 Fully procedural (including RGB subpixel rendering) and blazing fast, though I'm not completely happy with the CRT stuff. Still a work in progress. #unity3d #gamedev #realtimevfx

📼🖥️ Some technical insight into CRTs: 📺 CRT monitors are analogue displays and unlike the case with real pixels, there's no discrete or logical circuitry (addressable matrix) behind the coloured 'subpixels' - they are a passive component of the machine. This also means the screen's RGB phosphor cells can be partially illuminated to any continuous fractional coverage, especially from 'bleeding' of nearby phosphors being inadvertently excited by the electron beam(s) within. 🔋 CRT = Cathode-Ray Tube, where 'cathode ray' was later understood to be a beam of electrons emitted from the cathode component of the electronic structure. The hardware is well-known for use in the design of older monitors and displays, in which one or more 'guns' (beam emitters) fire at, and excite a panel of RGB-coloured, (cathode-)luminescent cells (the screen: either as a 'shadow mask' or 'grille') in rapid-fire, horizontal scanlines via electromagnetic deflection (since they can't move programmable physical components that fast). The phosphors would then remain briefly lit, and by our persistence of vision we'd see the entire screen appear as a fully visible frame. ⚡️ This analogue nature is one of the reasons CRTs, in some ways, have superior rendering tech over digital, discrete pixel-based monitors like we have today. A lot of the [pixel] art from that era is best viewed on CRT monitors, which otherwise appears 'chunky' on modern displays, while intended to be rendered with a softened, more natural/'realistic' appearance not bound to actual pixel blocks. 💖 The QT is a very cool stylized simulation of TV CRTs by Maxime, as snapping pixels. I love this aesthetic and I'm wondering if I should add pixel-snapping myself (as an option/toggle). 🕹️ I've mentioned this before, but that's one of the advantages of better hardware today being used to simulate retro visuals- we're not limited to 1:1 recreations, and can do some -very- creative mixing. 🟥🟩🟦 Immediately below you can see a bit of my recent work with VHS and [TV] CRT-like rendering of RGB cells in Unity. #gamedev #indiedev #unity3d #realtimevfx
