the trajectory matters more than the current implementation. today it's an optional birthdate field in systemd. tomorrow it's a dependency for package installation. the year after that it's tied to a digital id. every identity field added to core infrastructure eventually becomes mandatory when the next compliance mandate drops. grapheneos refusing entirely is the principled position - the only architecture that survives is one where compliance is structurally impossible.

@GrapheneOS have publicly stated that they will not be implementing any age or personal ID checks, or forced account.

It's simple. If it asks for intrusive information, it does not get it because I won't use it.

Already have set up the tooling (quick and dirty at the moment) that uses a fork of systemd, where the DOB field changes dynamically... it's always in a 100 year range relative to the current date, but random every time it's queried. If I need to do this to more stuff, I will. Finally, if I need to make my own distro, I will.

I do not agree with age verification laws going international. We need to fight back because they are A. Privacy Concern B. Bypassed Easily C. Risk of data breaches They are not multiple choice, they're all correct!

They need to bring back kid devices. Make smartphones and tablets specifically designed for children. Give parents the tools to help protect their children online. Don't force dystopian surveillance laws on the entire world. Dumb boomer politicians need to be informed.

unlawful color of law. This is exactly why America has a Bill of Rights. They left the Diseased King George... and we are dealing with the Red Coats again. Bill of Rights in the US were written for this reason

It's obviously a horrible statist power grab which would be ineffective at protecting kids. Will be a good test especially for Linux distros, in not complying with tyranny. Switching distros is trivial, making it very competitive. Compliant ones will be left in the dust.

Yes I know I've been calling my representatives to this law removed in California because we need to fight back against this mess anyways.

GrapheneOS has already said no to implementing it. Several Linux distros have said no.

I like what @notbot_official is building @fizpawiz age verification is tricky, but they seem to have a real solution. Also @Gajumaru_Chain and @QPQ_IoEcs GRIDS dead drop signature protocol tech is key for wallet and signing @GregChew14 Would love to see these two guys on a you tube video discussing what they are building and privacy. The combination of these two above with @JuriAksenov GrapheneOS would be a dream.

The Brits, a society that could not be bothered to protect 250,000 innocent and helpless children from grooming gangs, are going to age verify an OS, and Linux at that because, man, think of what could happen to the children! 😡🤬🤬😡

IT's utterly ridiculous. An OS should serve me, not the other way around.

avoid OS or hardware which is implementing it. Same was with Microslop - it started since, and they have started rolling back somehow a lot of things.

Michigan will soon join the "Dystopian Gang" and other US states as well as countries will follow. I hope that there is more resistance like @GrapheneOS @DevuanOrg and @OmarchyLinux have shown. Give them one inch, and they will have surveillance and censorship everywhere.

The entire open source of the community should fight this tooth and nail. The fact that they are caving already is appalling.

To my knowledge, they are not "hitting" GOS. As for "hitting Linux" - no, they are only hitting the brains of some left-wing package and distro maintainers. These demands will he rejected by public.

This feels like a slippery slope 👀 Linux has always stood for freedom + privacy - bringing age checks at the OS level raises serious concerns. Where do we draw the line between safety and surveillance? 🤔

So kids can’t start up computers now? For real? Brain-dead bureaucrats moving humanity back to the Stone Age. The new internet will rise, probably based on the dark web, using privacy-first browsers and tooling. The current internet will wither on the vine and die.

Pulling age checks into operating systems shows how deeply these policies are starting to reach. Once identity requirements sit at the system level, avoiding them becomes much harder.
