Today, I instructed Ukraine’s Minister of Defense and the Commander-in-Chief to intensify all contacts with the American side. We now have the necessary political statements and decisions, and we must implement them as quickly as possible to protect our people and our positions. We are also continuing our sanctions work in Ukraine. Today, we have a package of sanctions against companies from China that, unfortunately, supply components for Russia’s weapons production, particularly for “shaheds.” There is clear evidence of this. The details are found in the remains of downed “shaheds.” We will also discuss this with our partners so they align with Ukraine’s sanctions.

A lot of attention today was given to the return of our children, to the release of prisoners of war and civilians held by Russia. We agreed to work on this. The U.S. President also supported a meeting at the level of leaders. Such a meeting is necessary to resolve sensitive issues. I thank President Trump for the invitation and for today’s special format of our meeting. I also thank all the leaders who were with us today: Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer, Friedrich Merz, Giorgia Meloni, Alexander Stubb, Ursula von der Leyen, Mark Rutte. Today was an important step, a demonstration of genuine unity between Europe and the United States. We are now preparing for new diplomatic steps together with our partners in Europe and, importantly, in the United States. In fact, we are in contact almost daily with everyone who can make diplomacy meaningful. As of now, there is no clear information about what exactly the Russians plan to bring to Istanbul. We don’t have it, Türkiye doesn’t have it, and neither do the United States or other partners. And at this point, it looks far from serious. We discussed this yesterday with President Erdoğan. Of course, everyone in the world wants diplomacy to work and for an actual ceasefire to take place. Everyone wants Russia to stop playing games with diplomacy and end the war. Everyone wants a serious peace – and Russia must agree to that. That should be the agenda of the meetings. We have already presented our agenda. And we hope the American side will be decisive on the issue of sanctions – to help bring peace closer.

We will finalize the strategy by March 1 and approve it afterward. I presented her with the Order of Merit, II class, for her significant personal contribution to strengthening our cooperation and supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. I am grateful for all the assistance to our people, for the visit, and especially for her trip to Chernihiv. It is extremely important for us when partners personally visit such places and support the reconstruction of our schools and kindergartens. We discussed defense support. We value Latvia’s contribution to the PURL initiative. We also spoke about the possibilities of using the SAFE mechanism and the prospects for joint weapons production. Latvia is a leader in the Drone Coalition. This year, it has supplied Ukraine with about 12,000 drones, and this is vital support for our defense. We also focused on the diplomatic situation. Our positions are aligned – the sanctions pressure on Russia must be increased, and the relevant work with partners must continue. Latvia stands with us and will continue to do so. I am grateful for the unwavering support for Ukraine.
