The continued easing of sanctions against Russia does not reflect the real situation in the war or in diplomacy and fuels the Russian leadership’s illusion that they can continue the war. This week alone, the Russians have launched over 2,360 attack drones, more than 1,320 guided aerial bombs, and nearly 60 missiles of various types at our cities and communities. Every dollar paid for Russian oil is money for the war. More than 110 tankers from Moscow’s shadow fleet are currently at sea. On board are over 12 million tons of Russian oil, which, due to the easing of sanctions, can once again be sold without consequences. That is $10 billion – a resource that is directly converted into new strikes against Ukraine. That is why it is important that Russian tankers are stopped, not allowed to deliver oil to ports. The aggressor’s oil exports must decrease, and Ukraine’s long-range sanctions continue to work toward that goal. I am grateful to every one of our warriors for their precision, and I thank all partners who are helping to increase pressure on Russia for this war.

SSU units struck three oil depots in the Stavropol region at once, while units of our Armed Forces hit another fuel facility in the same region. Direct hits were recorded on three Russian shadow fleet tankers in the Black Sea. I thank every one of our units that is helping spread the realization in Russia that this war must end. Thank you to the warriors of the Unmanned Systems Forces, our intelligence services, the Missile Forces and Artillery, and the Special Operations Forces. Zelenskyy in Davos: Russian oil is being transported right along Europe’s shores, and that oil is funding the war against Ukraine. This directly contributes to destabilizing Europe. Russian oil must be stopped, confiscated, and sold for Europe’s benefit. Why not? If Putin has no money, there is no war. If Europe has the resources, it can protect its people. In a September video by Yle. fi, experts explain that about 70% of the tankers used in the Russian shadow fleet are at least 15 years old. They do not go through proper servicing which increases the risk of technical issues and malfunctions. A lot of these vessels have been blacklisted in the first place because their condition is so bad (meaning they are not allowed to sail) but they still continue voyaging through the Gulf of Finland, for example. Many of them sail under the jurisdictions of different countries, which makes them harder to track. The risk of an oil spill is getting more and more likely - and the shadow vessels carry tens of thousands tons of oil. The environmental disaster that would follow would have an unprecedented scale. It will affect all forms of wildlife and sea life, destroy the business of fishermen and coastal tourism for years, if not decades. Its aftermath for the environment would be indescribable, and the costs to mitigate such a disaster will be exorbitant. Since Russian shadow fleet tankers mostly don't have proper insurance, there is very little chance that any payments will follow that will cover the costs. These expenses will have to be borne by the country/countries near which this will happen, combined with future economic losses caused by damage to the environment. Moreover, Russian shadow fleet tankers are an extra burden for the coast guards as they have to check more vessels (again, many of them are in very poor condition) and have extra training, working on scenarios of possible environmental disasters. We see this clearly in Ukraine. While President Trump pushes for a peaceful resolution to a horrible war, China continues to fund Putin's war machine. Iran continues to supply technology and weapons. And North Korean combat troops remain in Russia on Ukraine's border.
