Let this not be just a one day drive but a sustainable effort to keep our footpaths strictly for pedestrians. We must set the right priorities, including our debates in Europe. Too many governments are still thinking about future relations with Russia. Instead, Europe's first priority must be Ukraine's victory. Then we must work for Ukraine's future, a positive future, a flourishing country, economically successful, with the strength to integrate veterans and refugees who are returning. Because everyone is working together on reconstruction. Russia must pay for this and learn to lose! Don’t you feel embarrassed by the chaos — the broken footpaths, the garbage-strewn sidewalks, the sheer hostility of our stinking public spaces to anyone on foot? I have no answer for my 9-year-old who keeps asking why other countries are so clean and have open/pedestrian spaces for children to walk without fearing they’ll end up under a vehicle. Don’t you get asked the same by your own children — or by the foreign delegates you host? This is not what a global city looks like. And yet, this is the everyday reality for millions of us in Bangalore This city — once full of charm, tree-lined streets, and a sense of community — is becoming unlivable for the very people who call it home. We don’t need more roads, more concrete, or more flyovers that rip apart our skyline and our spirit. We need a city that lets us WALK with dignity. Please, look beyond political compulsions. Look at the lives being lived on the ground — the elderly who stumble on broken pavements, the children who can’t walk to school safely, and millions of others who can't enjoy the once vibrant and green streets of Bangalore. Why do our cities look dirty, with garbage everywhere? Here, a child is showing a banner about the penalty for littering, but his parents ignore it. The same parents will later complain on social media and blame the authorities for not keeping our cities clean. We often complain, but we don't take responsibility ourselves but expect others to do so. We drive on the wrong side of the road and then complain about drivers who do the same. We throw garbage and then complain about unhygienic conditions. This is a result of social norms. We tend to do what others are doing, and the police cannot catch everyone, giving people an unfair advantage. This mentality trickles up the ladder, and nobody takes responsibility, leading to the mess we see in our cities. Our airports are clean because no one throws garbage there, and there is a positive demonstration of social norms. A few good people are not enough to change society.

In our Urban Development and Municipal Affairs departments, we have taken the principle decision that parking on both sides of the road, which has continued illegally for 15 years, will now be regulated. Parking will be allowed only on the designated side of the road, while parking on the other side will not be permitted. Secondly, parking fees are being collected illegally in parking lots, and taxes from these collections are not being paid to the government. These illegal collections must be stopped immediately so that the entire tax amount goes to the government. Also, the helpline number was not only a women’s helpline number; it was a child helpline number. The same number should now be integrated as a women’s helpline number as well. If anyone faces any problem, both the women’s helpline and child helpline numbers should remain active. In both the Women and Child department and the Urban Development and Municipal Affairs department, a call centre should be set up so that the public can call these two departments and share their issues and grievances. She adds, "Lastly, wherever there is pollution, we have seen over the last 15 years in Bengal, in Kolkata and Asansol, that garbage is lying everywhere and is not being cleaned. Now this responsibility is also being given to the public through geotagging. We have developed an app where people can send geotagged pictures, and within two hours the corporation or municipality will come and clean the area.
