Ketogenic diets in the ICU? The research is beginning to explore it. In a randomized controlled trial of 40 patients with sepsis, investigators tested a medically supervised ketogenic diet during critical illness. All patients in the ketogenic group achieved stable nutritional ketosis, with no serious adverse events attributed to the intervention. After day four, none of the ketogenic patients required insulin — compared to 35–60% of patients in the control group on any given day. The ketogenic group also experienced: • More ventilator-free days • More vasopressor-free days • More dialysis-free days • More ICU-free days Researchers observed signals consistent with reduced immune dysregulation and lower inflammatory signaling — a meaningful finding in a condition defined by metabolic chaos and systemic inflammation. Consider these observations from a study I co-authored, conducted by my friend Dr. Albert Danan, a psychiatrist practicing in Toulouse, France. 31 adults with "treatment-resistant" schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression volunteered to try a mildly #ketogenic whole-foods diet in the hospital, under close medical and psychiatric supervision. ✨ All 28 patients who stayed on the diet for more than two weeks experienced substantial improvements in mental and physical health ✨ 43% achieved complete clinical remission from their psychiatric condition ✨ 64% left the hospital on less psychiatric medication ✨ Their general metabolic health also improved dramatically You do not see outcomes like this in conventional inpatient psychiatric care.
