Here’s one of the most fascinating child development videos I’ve ever shared. As your baby learns language, they begin by approximating the examples you set. After a period of early experimentation with sound (including cries, coos and gurgles), infants begin babbling - making speech-like sounds (which often include components of conventional speech) that are - nonetheless - not yet conventionally meaningful. This babbling phase is a precursor to the use of formal words. And it happens in all languages. Including sign language. This video shows an infant (who, by the way, is not hearing impaired) “babbling” to her deaf grandparents. As they sign to her, she responds in kind, using her hands to approximate the signed communication that they are modeling. It’s a whole serve and return conversation, just as if they were conversing verbally. If you’ll watch carefully, you’ll note distinct turn taking. And - interestingly - that with her grandparents she largely avoids vocalizations, in favor of gesture. What a treat to see this rich example of bilingual language development. How does language begin? There’s a lot of important growth and development that occurs during the 45 month window from prenatal to age three. But among infancy’s greatest accomplishments is language acquisition. So over the coming week I’m going to dedicate this space to a series of posts on the sequential growth of language, which you may be surprised to learn begins even before birth. As your baby’s hearing activates between 18-20 weeks of gestation, they begin hearing their first sounds: Mom’s heartbeat, digestive rumblings, and voice. As you might imagine, sound isn’t crystal clear in the amniotic sac. (It’s not a perfect comparison, but consider how your own hearing changes under water in a swimming pool. You can still hear, but the sounds are muffled and significantly degraded.) For this and other reasons, your baby isn’t absorbing specific vocabulary at this point, but there’s little question that they are beginning to familiarize themselves with not only the tones/sound of their mother’s voice, but the distinct rhythms and patterns of her native language. We’re still only beginning to understand prenatal learning, but research demonstrates that in the minutes and hours immediately after birth, newborns already recognize their mother’s voice and can distinguish (and prefer) their own native language. That’s right: at birth babies’ brains have already begun organizing themselves around their mothers’ native languages. Pretty remarkable, no? It’s the first step in a miraculous process by which young children acquire complex linguistic ability over a period of just months. As for this precious little one, just minutes old, watch how he calms from a cry to an instant silence when exposed to the clear and familiar sound of his mother’s voice. While laying on their backs, babies not only begin to watch and coordinate the movement of their feet, but begin reaching for them with their hands - and exploring them with their mouths. (Babies are flexible like that.) What you’re seeing here also involves the engagement of abdominal core muscles and is a sign that baby is soon to begin rolling and crawling. Do babies develop accents even before they can speak conventionally? The short answer is yes… and these linguistic markers begin even sooner than you might think. So many of you tagged me in this video yesterday featuring an infant that babbles with the same Scouse accent as his mother. Other than “no” he doesn’t speak a single conventional word, but listen to how the rhythm and intonation of his vocalizations mirror those to which he is exposed daily. As hearing becomes functional during the third trimester, infants are exposed to the distinct patterns of their mothers’ native language - with studies suggesting newborns can already distinguish (and prefer) what will become their native tongue only hours after birth. Incredibly this learning doesn’t wait until the babbling stage to evidence itself. Research suggests that even the cries of newborns reflect this preference. That’s right: babies cry with an accent. One major study on the topic showed that French babies cry with a rising intonation, while German infants favor a falling melody - both reflecting the patterns of their native languages. We’re only just beginning to understand the deep learning that begins in utero. It’s just more evidence that the period from prenatal to three is the most critical window in all of human development. When it comes to infants, however, lap reading can deprive babies of their favorite (and most important) sight: YOU. Which is why you might want to explore face-to-face reading as well. (With your baby facing toward you and the book simultaneously.) Developmentally, there are multiple benefits to allowing your baby to see you as you read together. Your little one is an expert at “reading” your face. This posture allows your baby to track your eyes to discover what you’re tuning in to. It also allows them to watch your mouth and learn how you’re making the words and sounds that accompany the pictures. This clever little one illustrates the case beautifully, creating a face-to-face experience of her own. Watch as our hero divides her attention between the book (and her important page turning responsibility!) and dad’s face - which she swivels her head to admire with equal (if not greater) interest. Kudos to dad, as well, as he balances book time and face time with his daughter - taking time to honor her interest in connection and observation. It’s not only a surefire smile, but a great opportunity to answer a question I often receive about whether it’s okay (and/or beneficial) to talk or read to your baby about ANY topic of interest (no matter how far removed from traditional “baby talk”). My answer is a qualified yes. As newborns enter the world (and as they grow), exposure to rich and varied vocabulary is pure benefit. So talk, talk, talk… read, read, read. Share your interests. Narrate your day. Reenact the contents of your junk mail! My only caveat here is to never underestimate the extent to which your baby is soaking up your language like a sponge. Receptive vocabulary (that which we comprehend) is a precursor to expressive (or spoken) language… and begins early. As babies approach 6-9 months they are already associating meaning with some spoken words… which is a gentle reminder that it’s best to be thoughtful about what content you are exposing them to. My general rule of thumb is to never assume your baby is too young to begin absorbing the content of your language. While you won’t find me sharing it, the internet is chock full of videos of toddlers unleashing strings of profanity and other inappropriate content to which they’ve been exposed in their environments. Your attention please: Is there a mother on the plane? ✈️ 😂 I often write about the brain development of young children. But did you know that babies’ brains aren’t the only ones growing and changing after their arrival? It’s time we talked about “Parent Brain.” A growing body of evidence suggests that the brains of primary caregivers (mothers, fathers and even non-biological parents) undergo change during the transition to parenthood. Just as infancy is a critical developmental window for children, parents’ brains adapt as a result of hormonal activations designed to stimulate caregiving instincts. Did you know, for example, that the sound of a crying baby stimulates activity in the brains of parents in ways that are not experienced by non-parents? Just as babies’ reflexes are designed to optimize their chances at thriving and surviving, so too does biology work to ensure their wellbeing in the brains of their parents. Accompanying these changes is a specialized set of parental knowledge - like how to collapse a double stroller. 😀 Witness as a group of (presumptive) non-parents have a go at folding one up on an airport tarmac. It’s time we talked about “Parent Brain.” A growing body of evidence suggests that the brains of primary caregivers (mothers, fathers and even non-biological parents) undergo change during the transition to parenthood. Just as infancy is a critical developmental window for children, parents’ brains adapt as a result of hormonal activations designed to stimulate caregiving instincts. Did you know, for example, that the sound of a crying baby stimulates activity in the brains of parents in ways that are not experienced by non-parents? Just as babies’ reflexes are designed to optimize their chances at thriving and surviving, so too does biology work to ensure their wellbeing in the brains of their parents. Accompanying these changes is a specialized set of parental knowledge - like how to collapse a double stroller. 😀 Witness as a group of (presumptive) non-parents have a go at folding one up on an airport tarmac. The Christians who work at these clinics are doing the Lord’s work, often with little support and in the face of attacks from the media and Democrat politicians. They need our help serving vulnerable moms and their babies. One way to support them is to donate baby and maternity items. This time of year they are often running low on supplies. Wait… what?? This newborn caught mom and grandma off guard by displaying what appeared to be some very advanced skills. After all, most babies begin crawling between 6-10 months… so seeing this at just 3 DAYS? What gives?! What you’re seeing here IS, in fact, miraculous - but also very common to newborns. It’s known as the breast crawl. At birth, babies are equipped by nature with a special set of skills (reflexes) designed to help them thrive and survive in their new surroundings. The breast crawl combines several of these reflexes in a coordinated effort to find food. What you’re seeing is a combination of the stepping and rooting reflexes, typically demonstrated while baby is laying face down on mom’s stomach. The stepping reflex is activated when the soles of the feet come in contact with a solid surface… usually mom’s abdomen (but in this case the wall of the bassinet) and encourages alternating limb movement designed to help baby shimmy up mom’s chest toward the breast. The rooting reflex, meanwhile, stimulates baby to turn their head in the direction of contact with the face (in search of the nipple). Babies’ eyesight remains poor at this stage, but nature has equipped them with one more advantage: the ability to sniff out the smell of mother’s milk. Small bumps on the mother’s areola known as Montgomery Glands emit a scent that helps guide baby to the food they are seeking. Ultimately what you see in this fantastic video (posted to TT by samantha_elizabeth_) is not a baby about to start crawling across the room, but a hungry newborn using all the tools at their disposal to help find nourishment. And that may be even more amazing!

Wishing a very Happy Father’s Day to all the paternal figures in our lives! Today — and every day — we give special thanks to our Keepers. It takes an extraordinary person to raise an orphaned elephant. Many of our Keepers say they have their human children and their elephant children — but really, they’re all their children! Each one is raised with a lifetime of love, dedication, and support. Orphans like Toto (pictured here as a baby with Keeper Joseph) are guided by their Keepers every step of the way, until they are ready to reclaim their place in the wild. Ask any Keeper about their greatest pride, and you’ll likely hear the same answer: seeing ‘their’ babies grow up happy and healthy, return to the wild where they belong, and one day start families of their own. #fathersday

Parents often ask me about the best way to engage infants in lap reading - noting, at the very earliest stages, that their babies aren’t always real attentive to books. It’s important, first and foremost, to note that infant attention spans are very short. So know that it’s okay to start small… reading for just a minute or two at a time. But there are also ways you can optimize your chances of a successful experience. One trick is to literally turn things around, as illustrated by this great video from justjessfood on IG, who (with the assistance of a supportive pillow) has turned lap reading into a face-to-face social experience. There’s nothing your baby loves more than your face… as evidenced by this sweet little guy who arguably takes more delight in mom’s expressive reading than in a view of the book itself. And that’s just fine! He’s still accruing all the language benefits as they bond. And talk about an appreciative audience! Next time you read with your baby try configuring the situation so that they can see both you and the book. You may find it makes a big difference.
