India is increasing ethanol blending in petrol from 20% to 30%. But what exactly does that mean for your car, fuel bills, and the environment? In this video, we break down what ethanol blending actually is, why governments across the world promote it, and how India’s E30 push could affect everyday drivers. While higher ethanol blends may help reduce oil imports, support farmers, and lower certain emissions, they could also lead to lower mileage, more frequent refuelling, and potential compatibility issues for older vehicles. The video also looks at the environmental concerns around large-scale ethanol production, including water usage and pressure on agricultural land. Note: In its May 15 notice, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) established standards for E22, E25, E27, and E30 fuel blends. 👉My question to the Transport Minister is regarding ethanol blending. Earlier, the blending level of ethanol was 10%, and recently it was increased to 20%. ❓Has the government conducted any scientific studies or consulted research associations, such as the one in Pune, before increasing the blending percentage? 👉Another concern is that customers are not aware of ethanol blending in petrol, and retail shops are not displaying any details about it. It is reported that many retail shops are blending ethanol more than 20%, which may affect the mechanical side of vehicles. ❓I also have a question for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister. EXPERT: Water has pulled the ethanol down. That bottom layer is now water plus ethanol, and the top is almost pure petrol. HOST: What happens if this goes into the fuel tank? EXPERT: If that layer reaches the engine, it may misfire or not start at all. HOST: And E20 makes this worse? EXPERT 😳: Yes. With E20, there is double ethanol, so if water enters the tank, the separation problem becomes more severe.

The irony is hard to miss. The Congress-led UPA government had fixed the price for oil companies to procure ethanol for blending with petrol at ₹27 per litre in 2010, years before the BJP came to power. The decision was part of the Ethanol Blended Petrol programme. Ethanol blending was clearly a “dream” of the UPA. The problem? Like so many of their other “dreams”, they implemented very little. Now, after the Modi government has actually taken ethanol blending from a policy aspiration to a nationwide reality, they want to claim credit and blame the BJP for a policy they themselves initiated. You cannot have it both ways.

All those who have suddenly “discovered” problems with their cars and fuel economy may be disappointed to revisit what the UPA itself was saying. The then UPA Petroleum Minister accused the NDA of ignoring the interests of sugarcane farmers and promised Parliament that his government would blend ethanol with petrol. He even urged people to drink less so that more ethanol could be diverted for fuel! So where were all these catastrophic claims about engines and mileage then? Funny how people’s cars never seemed to complain when ethanol blending was UPA policy, but suddenly develop “problems” when the same objective is being implemented today through a phased rollout. The policy isn’t new. Only the politics around it is.

Did a simple ethanol check myself yesterday! Watch it till the end! Took 170 mL of E20 petrol, added 20 mL of water, shook it well, and after the layers separated, the water/ethanol layer measured 40 mL. That suggests roughly 20 mL of ethanol in 170 mL of fuel around 11.8% ethanol (roughly E12), not E20. If my calculations are correct, then I have a genuine question: has the ethanol content quietly been reduced from E20 to E12 temporarily because of a widespread backlash? or is there another explanation for these results? Either way, this also shows how readily ethanol attracts water and what moisture inside a fuel tank can potentially do over time. Happy to be corrected if my calculations or the test method are wrong!! ☺️
