Did a simple ethanol check myself yesterday! Watch it till the end! Took 170 mL of E20 petrol, added 20 mL of water, shook it well, and after the layers separated, the water/ethanol layer measured 40 mL. That suggests roughly 20 mL of ethanol in 170 mL of fuel around 11.8% ethanol (roughly E12), not E20. If my calculations are correct, then I have a genuine question: has the ethanol content quietly been reduced from E20 to E12 temporarily because of a widespread backlash? or is there another explanation for these results? Either way, this also shows how readily ethanol attracts water and what moisture inside a fuel tank can potentially do over time. Happy to be corrected if my calculations or the test method are wrong!! ☺️

Someone shared this video on Instagram from July 3. A customer refueled at this petrol pump, and shortly afterward the vehicle broke down. When the mechanic inspected it, what was supposed to be petrol reportedly turned out to be water. The customer then returned to the same pump and asked the staff to draw fuel from the same nozzle for testing. In the video, the sample collected in a transparent tube appears to be almost entirely water, which is then shown to the pump manager. The current petrol pump infrastructure was never designed to safely store high ethanol fuel blends. With the monsoon underway, even a small amount of water entering underground storage tanks can trigger phase separation, where ethanol separates from the petrol. This contaminated fuel can then reach vehicles, potentially causing severe engine damage and leaving consumers to bear costly repair bills.

Even if someone even buys new E20 compatibile vehicle - it is only better seals & components bro. For how long in India’s roads & climate it is sustainable? Parts will keep degrading silently, and most won’t even realise it until the damage is done. Is this fair??? Basically we are screwed. 👎🏾 Check it.

THE E20 DEBATE: FACTS VS HYPOCRISY. HERE'S AN UNDENIABLE FACT: The E20 programme did not begin under the Modi government. Ethanol blending was approved years earlier, during the UPA. The difference is in execution. Blending remained stuck at roughly 1–1.5% for years before accelerating significantly under the NDA. So, let's first get the politics out of the way. If ethanol blending was acceptable in principle then, why is it suddenly portrayed as anti-people now? Now, let's look at the arguments being presented by critics: CRITICS ARGUMENT 1: E20 FUEL IS BEING PUSHED BY NDA TO KEEP SUGAR CANE FARMERS HAPPY. There's no doubt Ethanol is creating an additional income stream for sugarcane farmers. But governments have always handed out subsidies or incentives to farmers. + MSP exists for 23 crops. Sugar cane farmers get SAP or State Advised Price. + Fertiliser subsidies. + Cheap or free electricity. + Irrigation subsidies. + Procurement policies. If these benefits to farmers are accepted as legitimate public policy, why is E20 policy being targeted in isolation for market distortion? CRITICS ARGUMENT 2: ETHANOL PRODUCTION IS WATER CONSUMING. Yes, sugarcane consumes a great deal of water. But so do + Paddy cultivators. Just look at the tumbling water tables in Punjab, Haryana. + AI and data centers. + Semiconductor manufacturing. + Steel and cement production. The question is not whether something uses water, but whether the benefits justify the costs. Again why are critics holding E20 alone to a test that they don't set for others? CRITICS ARGUMENT 4: COST OF CAR ENGINE WEAR AND TEAR, MILEAGE INEFFICIENCY OUTWEIGHS BENEFITS. It is true that Ethanol has about 34% less energy per litre than petrol. But because E20 contains only 20% ethanol, the overall energy content of the fuel falls by roughly 4%–7%. So at 5% a car that gives 20 km/L on pure petrol will give 19km/L. E20 ran around 97 km. XP100 ran 116 km. That is 19.4 km/l vs 23.2 km/l. Important caveat: XP100 is high-octane performance fuel with additives, so this is not a perfect lab test of normal pure petrol vs E20. OPINION: If fuel changes mileage this much, give people a choice at petrol pumps. Do not force E20 on everyone and then call complaints propaganda.

The main characteristic of the fuel is still fossil based which is gasoline. The specifications are well structured in terms of its compliance to BIS standard IS 17021 published in 2018. Again, these standards are a result of a dialogue between various scientific agencies, experts and extensive testing. And all ethanol-based gasoline, E20 gasoline which is spread across the country now in all retail outlets, 77,000 plus of them across the country, have uniformly adopted the specifications, which is compliant to meeting the, emission standards for BS6 as well as several other specifications which regulate the engine performance in terms of higher RON, compliant sulfur and water content which is, compliant to meeting the requirement of engine performance.This is a summary of the few points of the E20 program of the Government of India, which is now made us less reliant on 100% import of crude towards production of gasoline.
