Last year, Hurricane Helene ravaged Florida’s Big Bend and devastated inland communities, becoming the single-most destructive weather event in 2024. In monitoring and forecasting Helene’s formation, the NOAA National Hurricane Center (NHC) was able to successfully predict that a tropical weather system would become a potentially destructive hurricane more than 3 days in advance. Through the use of Potential Tropical Cyclone advisories, NHC is now able to provide this advanced notice of potential impacts from these systems. Yesterday, I was invited by NOAA to be an observer on a Hurricane Hunters mission into Hurricane Milton. During the 8 hour flight, we penetrated the eye 3 times. It was an extremely intense & educational experience. This powerful storm deserves serious attention from everyone.

Tropical storm force gusts will extend all the way from the beaches of the Eastern Seaboard to Bermuda around 700 miles, with hurricane gusts over 300 miles wide. #erin #hurricane #fyp #HurricaneErin
