So all Petrol sold in India from April 1 onwards will have a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95. Now, that resolves one myth that higher Octane fuel is more energy dense, because we know ethanol isn’t as energy dense as petrol. But higher octane do have certain benefits and how will that help you and Indian carmakers going forward? I try to explain this rather complex topic as succinctly as possible.

Manish Kashyap’s petrol price video leaves out one very important detail. That ₹167 figure isn’t the price of regular petrol. It’s XP100 — 100-octane premium fuel meant for performance vehicles. Regular petrol is 91-octane. And XP100 was already ₹160 when it launched in December 2020, before the E20 rollout. Today, it’s around ₹167. So using the price of premium fuel to attack E20 and Nitin Gadkari Ji is simply comparing two different things to create outrage.

VIDEO | Delhi: At the E20 ethanol-petrol blended programme, experts Vartika Shukla says, "It is pertinent to note that since E20 ethanol has about 80% of gasoline which is fossil fuel. The main characteristic of the fuel is still fossil based which is gasoline. The specifications are well structured in terms of its compliance to BIS standard IS 17021 published in 2018. Again, these standards are a result of a dialogue between various scientific agencies, experts and extensive testing. And all ethanol-based gasoline, E20 gasoline which is spread across the country now in all retail outlets, 77,000 plus of them across the country, have uniformly adopted the specifications, which is compliant to meeting the, emission standards for BS6 as well as several other specifications which regulate the engine performance in terms of higher RON, compliant sulfur and water content which is, compliant to meeting the requirement of engine performance.This is a summary of the few points of the E20 program of the Government of India, which is now made us less reliant on 100% import of crude towards production of gasoline. First, consumers should have a choice at petrol pumps... those who want E20 fuel should be able to buy E20, while those who prefer pure petrol should have the option to purchase pure petrol. Second, the price of E20 fuel should be lower than that of pure petrol. Third, with global crude oil prices having declined, the retail price of petrol should be reduced to below Rs 84 per litre. If ethanol is not beneficial from any perspective, why is it being promoted? People are facing difficulties because of ethanol. It is more expensive than petrol, delivers lower mileage, does not benefit farmers, and does not save foreign exchange. Moreover, in areas surrounding ethanol production plants, groundwater reportedly becomes polluted. So why is the central government pushing ethanol across the country by presenting misleading figures and against the wishes of the people? Why is it forcing it upon citizens? What is the Modi government's compulsion or hidden agenda?
