It's a Kaman K-max. Heavy lifting helicopter. There's only 100 worldwide or so. No need for a tail rotor. With a full tank of fuel they can lift 8000 pounds!

From a video on Threads - you can see the helicopter starts yawing to the right before the tail separates followed by the main rotor. Did the tail rotor fail first? I find it crazy how quickly this could go from normal flight to an unrecoverable break up in seconds.

A Bell 222 (think Airwolf) has crashed in Huntington Beach, California this afternoon. N222EX is well know to visit local car shows and charity events in SoCal. You can see the tail rotor start to change directions in the video and a fast clockwise rotation starts meaning tail rotor authority has been lost. This is the absolute worst time to lose a tail rotor. In forward flight you have a chance but near zero airspeed, it’s next to impossible to fly the aircraft out of it. Latest report is it was just the pilot onboard and he is alive with injures. Pray🙏 🎥sip this ☕️

it wasnt mast bumping. the helicopter was flying straight and level just before the rotor system failure took place. if it was mast bumping, the rotor would show damage. but in the video we can see that the rotor system after it separates from the helicopter is very much intact.
