Ranganath inspected Malkam Cheruvu on Friday morning to review the reasons behind the recent flooding in the surrounding areas. After reviewing revenue and village records, HYDRA cleared 16 business sheds built within the FTL boundary, removed dumped debris, and desilted up to 4 meters deep. The foul smell is gone, and the lake’s area has now nearly doubled to 28 acres within four months. With just a couple of rains, the lake has filled up. Officials said this revival was possible with the cooperation of all departments, local MLAs, and corporators. Protecting Nearby Habitations from Floods Earlier, rainwater would flood nearby residential colonies since there was no channel for water to enter the lake. Now, 7 inlets have been created to bring water into the lake, and the old outlet has been developed along with a new one to safely drain excess water. Measures were taken to prevent sewage from mixing with lake water. Islands have been created to support biodiversity. Boating has resumed, groundwater levels have improved, and borewells have been recharged. A 1.5 km pathway around the lake has been laid, with nearly 600 people visiting daily for walking and recreation. On weekends, it has become a picnic spot. Facilities such as health amenities and community halls for small gatherings are also being developed, making the lake a multi-purpose space. Towards a Green & Safe City HYDRA Commissioner Mr. A.V. Ranganath said that reviving Nallacheruvu faced many challenges. At one stage, when demolition of encroachments began, including 16 sheds within the FTL on September 22, there was resistance and hardships. Despite obstacles, HYDRAA continued its work and results are now visible. As part of the first phase, six lakes were taken up for development. Of these, Bathukamma Kunta (Amberpet) and Nallacheruvu (Kukatpally) are nearly ready, while four others—Bamruknudoula Lake, Uppal Nallacheruvu, Thammadikunta, and Sunnam Lake—will be completed soon. In the next phase, 13 more lakes will be developed. He added that lakes play a vital role—preventing floods in monsoon and addressing water scarcity in summer. This initiative is in line with the vision of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, who a century ago built two major reservoirs—Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar—for flood control and water security. For two years I kept monitoring. In November 2022, I broke the story that changed everything. My front-page TOI investigation — “Plotted and Sold: Land Sharks Bite Into Kamuni in Hyderabad” exposed the organised mafia operation: night-time earth filling, construction of rooms on the newly “reclaimed” land, and open sale of plots with “lakefront” banners. Using Google satellite imagery overlaid on old survey maps, I showed that not just the FTL but a full quarter of the lake had been encroached, along with its inflow and outflow nalas. Ranganath and demanded action in what had become Kukatpally MLA Madhavaram Krishna Rao’s constituency. By late 2024 the water hyacinth crisis had turned the lake into a mosquito breeding ground. Coordination Meeting Between Police and GHMC on Monsoon Preparedness Advance measures to prevent inconvenience to city residents Keeping the upcoming monsoon season in view, the Police and GHMC departments have decided to work in coordination to take preventive measures so that citizens do not face any inconvenience. A convergence coordination meeting was held on Thursday at the Old Police Commissionerate Office in Basheerbagh under the leadership of Hyderabad Police Commissioner Sri V. C. Sajjanar, IPS, and GHMC Commissioner Sri R. V. Karnan, IAS. During the meeting, officials discussed several key issues and gave clear directions to field-level staff. They instructed that desilting of drainage systems and repair of pipelines should begin immediately on a war footing, rather than waiting for the rains to start. Officials also emphasized that work should begin immediately at the top 10 identified waterlogging points in the city to provide permanent solutions. They further directed that all open manholes must be securely covered to prevent any threat to public safety. It was noted that a proper plan should be prepared and implemented to remove encroachments on footpaths for the convenience of pedestrians. Authorities were also instructed to ensure that streetlights function properly at night for public safety and to install new lights wherever necessary. To prevent road accidents, engineering defects on roads should be rectified. Continuous measures should also be taken to avoid traffic congestion near ongoing flyover and underpass construction sites. GHMC Commissioner Sri R. V. Karnan stated: Ensuring that there is no loss of life or property during the monsoon is the primary responsibility of officials. GHMC will work closely with the police department to further improve urban infrastructure, with special focus on road maintenance and city beautification. In this regard, he has also informed that dedicated budget of Rs. 25 Crores per each Zone (Total - Rs. 150 Crores) shall be allocated exclusively for traffic improvement-related works. Hyderabad Police Commissioner Sri V. C. Sajjanar added: Such convergence meetings between departments help resolve ground-level issues more quickly. He stressed that top priority should be given to traffic regulation and pedestrian safety.
