NEW: Anishinaabe Leaders Raise Alarms About Enbridge’s Covert Line 5 Police Deals in Wisconsin Canadian oil pipeline giant Enbridge has begun construction of its Line 5 crude oil pipeline Northern Wisconsin; it has secretive deals with two counties to reimburse sheriff’s departments for responding to Line 5-related protests. Anishinaabe leaders and local residents are concerned about the potential for constitutional rights violations. Wenipashtaabe Gokee, Anishinaabe, spoke at the Feb. 24 Ashland County Board meeting, opposing the law enforcement deal: “I’ve got a duty and obligation to stand up for water. Indanishinaabekwe. I’m an Anishinaabe woman, and that’s part of my role…. I don’t like the feeling of having a target on my back.” Enbridge had similar deals in Minnesota during the 2020-2021 construction of its Line 3 pipeline. Minnesota law enforcement agencies received $8.3 million from Enbridge through a state-run escrow account. It led to biased policing. Indigenous leaders and allies say officers committed “egregious civil and constitutional rights violations,” including surveillance, harassment, ‘pain compliance’ torture, use of rubber bullets and pepper balls, denying medical care, strip searches, and more. Wisconsin’s deals are worse than Minnesota’s. Enbridge will pay sheriff’s departments using the Wisconsin Counties Association, a lobbying group, as the pass through. The Association is not subject to state open records laws. The public will not know how much Enbridge is paying law enforcement, names of funding sources, or how the money was spent. Bayfield County rejected the deal on a 10-2 vote. Board Member Mary Dougherty said, “Bayfield County has a responsibility to public safety, civil liberties, and public trust—not to quietly formalize a quasi security partnership around a highly controversial pipeline project with vague funding and extremely limited transparency.” Line 5 is a 73-year-old pipeline that carries oil from Canada, crossing the Bad River Reservation. In 2019, the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa sued Enbridge for illegal trespassing and demanded Enbridge leave their watershed. Several of Enbridge’s easements had expired in 2013, and the Bad River Band refused to renew them, citing the risk of tremendous environmental damage from any crude oil spills. Enbridge is now working on a 41-mile pipeline reroute around the reservation. The reroute crosses hundreds of rivers, streams, and wetlands that flow into the reservation, threatening the Band’s internationally recognized wild rice beds and walleye spawning grounds. Indigenous leaders call the reroute an act of cultural genocide.

🇨🇦🛢️🏭 : BC Premier David Eby says he is open to building a refinery in British Columbia to cut off imports of oil & gas from the USA. He announced this after being asked if he would lift the tanker ban across the Northern BC Coast. Eby says the TMX expansion is not being utilized at capacity and thus he sees no need for a new taxpayer funded pipeline. David also says there is no offer from the private sector to build a pipeline. Enbridge wanted to build the Northern Gateway pipeline 10 years ago. We also had a private offer to build a multi billion $ refinery in Kitimat. Both projects were cancelled because Justin Trudeau & David Eby made it impossible for private investors. In the case of the Northern Gateway pipeline, Justin Trudeau cancelled it in 2016 despite that line having First Nation consent & billions in equity shares in the line. Something I have posted about repeatedly, including a few days ago. Enbridge also spent $1 billion on consultations and environmental impact assessments, only to have the new Liberal government ax the project anyways. Once the BC NDP came to power, they made it next to impossible for a refinery project to be built by ensuring the process would cost far too much, while having too much uncertainty, to be viable. We lost a decade of prosperity because of Justin Trudeau's Liberals & the BC NDP pushing their self serving agendas. Only to now watch David Eby backtrack 10 years later. This should infuriate everyone. We could have had that refinery built by now and be domestically benefitting from & exporting premium jet fuel, gasoline, diesel & various types of crude. The reality is, David Eby is a failure & should be stepping down so a competent government can take over.

Conservatives believe a West Coast pipeline should not be held hostage by another costly Liberal condition. Why should Canadians have to spend billions on a costly Liberal condition - that's actually provincial jurisdiction - before Canada gets a profitable pipeline? That's unfair, unnecessary, and exactly the kind of Liberal political extortion that drove private-sector investment out of Canada in the first place. Conservatives will continue to fight to axe the federal industrial carbon tax, repeal and reform anti-development Liberal laws, cut red tape, restore private-sector confidence so pipelines can get built with private money, for jobs, energy security, strength here at home, and unbreakable leverage abroad.

🛢️⛔️🇨🇦🌊 : Before Justin Trudeau came to power, Enbridge spent $1 billion on a Northern Gateway pipeline proposal. 🛢️I put the proposed pipeline route from the Alberta oilsands to Kitimat, at the end of the video. 🦅Enbridge had an agreement with First Nation equity partners, who stood to gain $2 billion from the project. 🚫When Justin Trudeau came to power, the pipeline project was cancelled. 🤐This was done without consultation with First Nations or Enbridge, who lost bigtime on their investments. 💵So why would any private company want to waste vast sums of cash & time, only to be tossed out on a whim? 🏭Remember, we even had a proposal to build a refinery in Kitimat to help reduce the risks of a bitumen spill because we would be shipping very profitable refined products like jet fuel and gasoline. 💰The refinery proposal had loads of private investment ready to go. 👷It would have created thousands of excellent long term paying jobs for communities desperate for such lasting quality employment. That too was cancelled due to a complete lack of interest and even outright hostility from both the Federal & Provincial governments. We have lost tens of billions of dollars in economic growth for communities that desperately needed it.
