The contractor handling the Abeokuta-Ota-Lagos Road project has almost completed the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the section between Abeokuta and Papalanto, making the journey along this axis smooth and stress-free. Work is also progressing steadily between Papalanto, Ifo, and Sango, where construction activities are ongoing to deliver a durable and motorable road for the benefit of all. This project, though a federal road, was formally handed over to us after several years of failed interventions, and we took it upon ourselves to ensure it is fixed once and for all. Our administration remains resolute in its commitment to providing quality infrastructure that enhances economic growth, facilitates ease of movement, and improves the daily lives of our people. It is important to note that the railway corridor falls under the responsibility of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), not the Local Government. However, in the interest of public health, safety, and environmental cleanliness, we are taking proactive steps to support the clean-up. This week alone, three large waste bins were evacuated from the corridor. Over a month after our last update, we continue to record steady and measurable progress on the reconstruction of the Lagos–Abeokuta Road. Although it is a Federal road that suffered decades of neglect long before the commencement of this administration, we took a deliberate decision to intervene in the interest of our people. The project is currently at about 98% completion, with only lane markings left to be carried out. With both the binder and final wearing courses in place, the road is fully motorable and already improving movement, safety, and travel time for residents and road users. Major asphalt works have been delivered across most sections, and the road is visibly taking its final shape as only limited finishing activities remain. Phases One and Two, covering the Sagamu–Iperu axis, were earlier completed and opened to traffic. We are currently executing the reconstruction of the Iperu–Ilishan corridor. The road spans 5.3 kilometres and is being dualized to meet the needs of the communities along the route. This upgrade will also provide direct access from the Gateway International Airport to the Sagamu–Benin Expressway. As part of the project scope, we are constructing more than 5.0 kilometres of drainage and outfall systems designed to permanently address the flooding challenges that previously affected this environment. This is the same strategic road that passes through the Gateway International Airport, making its expansion even more critical for accessibility and future traffic flow. Work is progressing in phases. Earthworks and major drainage installations are ongoing, while laterite placement continues across various sections. Several portions ahead of the current active zone have already reached stone-base level and are now ready for asphalting. This demonstrates the pace and structure we have established to ensure steady, uninterrupted progress on the project. The Iperu–Ilishan road remains an important socioeconomic link, serving residents, businesses and airport-bound commuters. I was at Aba to inspect a couple of roads that are undergoing rehabilitation. I am happy with the progress of work, particularly at Cemetry Road. The contractor has also taken the initiative to desilt the drainage system, which demonstrates their commitment to ensuring a long-lasting and sustainable road infrastructure. It is worth noting that the rehabilitation efforts extend beyond Cemetry Road, with a total of nine roads currently undergoing partial and comprehensive rehabilitation. All the roads are being handled by reputable companies, including CCECC, Craneburg, and MCC. Regardless of the weather conditions, we remain dedicated to the task of rebuilding Aba for the benefit of our people.
