Work in progress... the Task Manager OG Pro disk space visualizer ( Each ball has a mass based on its file size, and they settle using gravity and physics towards the center. Thoughts?

Hard to beat windirstat maybe you can fork and clean up the performance?

Nah, they own the rectangle space. I'm trying to invent something better by adding motion and physics!

You say it like you could do better by hand. I'll wait.

Is something like Windows' Resource Monitor possible on macOS? I like the way you can filter processes accessing files/disk/network/RAM/CPU by checking boxes. I haven't seen anything like this on macOS.

Cool to look at but I feel I would miss windirstat method of combining things at folder scope as well. Not sure it’s as useful seeing large .bins from across my PC when only 1 of them ( and its accompanying folder of other files ) would be likely to be removed. Cool tho!

would be sweet to have something with the functionality of windirstat

I want to watch this while it defrags.

I'd prefer a normal, very fast, heat map. I don't want to be entertained by my disk overview - I want to observe its usage patterns, as quickly as possible, over time. The heatmap should be fast. If I want history and animation, gource works great for such things.

Have a look at GrandPerspective on the Mac. Similar idea, works very well.

The problem is not the visualization, but the lack of easy filtering and actions. Check SpaceSniffer filtering regexp for example, and couple that with actions like in gdu, empty a dir or a file, delete, view properties, or open the file/folder. It needs to be useful and usable.

You probably already thought of this, but it needs some filters, so you can filter out System files, folders you don't care about, etc. I'd also consider that a folder itself can get a bubble if it becomes large enough (excluding already represented files).

So much wasted space in between the circles. SpaceMonger got it right forever and always. Those boxes expand and re-pack themselves as it scans, and there's an optional Free Space box too to round out your whole drive capacity picture.

It's nifty, but not very practical. If filesize=ball size, and ball size=(eventual) position, then it's basically a slow and redundant way to sort by filesize. If we focus on practical and useful over nifty and redundant: - Ball size = filesize - Ball color = file type (assuming) Those two properties are already represented visually, so we don't need to represent them positionally. So what else is useful? Definitely nested folder groups and hierarchies, but like you said, those have been perfected already by WinDirStat and the like. What about a rotatable 3D graph (T.I.E. Fighter map, anyone?) with each axis being one of Created Date, Last Accessed Date, and Last Modified Date? Scatter the files along that, and I wonder what patterns will emerge. 🤔

I prefer a tree map, and it seems you’re about a prompt away!

With essentially infinite disk space nowadays I have lost interest in file or folder sizes. I'm glad I don't have to obsess anymore. 🙂

it seems unlikely that you can represent every file in such a display, can you? also, if you hover over the file do you get salient attributes?

Top 1000 are shown (configurable). If you click the ball, you get a little tooltip car with all the file details. I tried hot-tracking first but it was a little chaotic!

Neat, but it would be nice to have different styles based on preference. For example, I prefer the different sized rectangles WizTree uses but I also like the circular, pie chart-like style of DaisyDisk.

Love the idea. Would be fun if you could click on the balls to inspect what files it is covered by it.

Nice but out of context with this geeky retro. Instead of 3D matte balls try retro pixel type balls representation.

i watched gemma 4 12b build something genuinely impressive today, and then loop itself to death right in front of me. the full run is in the video, sped up but completely uncut, watch it to the end and you will catch the exact moment it stops building and starts looping right in the middle of the work. the task was clean, build a single file gravity simulator, n-body physics, orbits, collisions, running locally on one 3090 through an agent. and for ten minutes it was a joy to watch. it reached for a symplectic integrator on its own, the correct one, the kind that keeps orbits stable instead of spiralling out. real gravity with softening, proper orbital velocities, momentum conserved on collision. the physics was right. the thing actually worked. then on the very last step, writing a few tests to prove its own code, it fell into a loop. not a crash, a loop. it started repeating itself and would not stop. ten more minutes, thirty four thousand tokens into a single answer, the same fragments over and over, until i killed it myself. so it's not that gemma can't code. it did the hard part beautifully. it cannot finish. it cannot hold a long task together without unravelling, and finishing is the entire job in agentic work. here's the part that stings. i run this exact task, same harness, same card, on the chinese open models, qwen especially, and i never see this. they build it, they test it, they stop. every single time. google has the raw capability, you can see it sitting right there in the code, and then the model loops itself to death on a task a 27b from alibaba finishes clean. open weights, apache 2.0, so much to love on paper. i just need it to know when to stop talking.
