Xabi Alonso once said he doesn’t talk “shape” when pressing/defending. It’s about triggers & moments. This is a great example: you can’t pin down Real Madrid’s OOP “shape.” It’s players reading cues, reacting, & taking/passing responsibilities on.

Beautiful and this happened a lot high up the pitch too. In the first half Dortmund lost the ball multiple times while playing out from the back however not being a typical pressing side we couldn’t hold it for long and when we sit back, we sit back too deep. By the middle of the second half there were large spaces opening up in front of our defensive line

Marcello Lippi when asked about how to prepare teams “Football is more about state of mind than tactics.A team has its own identity & organization” Micro games to attune players to local solutions Offer guidelines about solutions but without expecting them to follow it rigidly

Four-man combinations in wide areas where the deepest player (support) becomes the highest player (depth) with runs on the blindside. A pattern that has been a big part of this tournament. The deep position of Trent lulls the opponent into a false sense of security.

Niko Kovac should give lectures about how to build up from the back — just so others can do the exact opposite. Same scenario every time, same result. They don’t just give the ball away—they hand it over centrally, in the worst possible spot.
