Believe it or not- Everything you see in this frame is falling. 😅 When I first reached the International Space Station, I had this strange hesitation: if I let go of something, won’t it just fall? On Earth, that’s exactly what happens. In space, though, my early instinct was to politely hand over items to crew-mates (one of them is quietly smirking in the background at my dismal lens changing skills 😅) instead of just releasing them. As you see in this video if I let go of the lens, it doesn’t drop—it hovers. Why? Because both the lens and I are falling at the same speed around Earth. At every point (x, y, z), we computed the local Jacobian matrix, J(x, y, z) = [ -σ σ 0 ] [ ρ - z -1 - x ] [ y x - β ] Then we found its eigenvalues λ and plotted them in the complex plane. Re(λ) tells us whether nearby motion is locally growing or decaying. Im(λ) tells us whether that local motion is rotating. That gives us the spectral flow of the Lorenz system and not the attractor itself, but the hidden local linear geometry driving its instability. When I saw that flow, it looked strangely cosmic with two mirrored swarms curling like particles trapped in a mathematical whirlpool. We witnessed the raw power of nature yesterday just south of Seward Alaska! It was incredible to watch this massive glacier calving, sending a huge wave through the water. Absolutely breathtaking to see firsthand. Glacial calving is a natural process where large chunks of ice break off from the edge of a glacier. This typically happens at the “terminus” or snout, where the glacier meets the sea, a lake, or even dry land. When these massive pieces of ice fall into the water, they become icebergs, or in smaller pieces, “growlers” or “bergy bits.” The process is primarily driven by gravity and the movement of the glacier itself. As a glacier flows—acting like a slow-moving river of ice—it experiences immense internal stress. When it reaches a point where it is no longer supported by land or where it extends out over the water, the ice becomes unstable. Cracks called crevasses form in the ice, and when these cracks penetrate deep enough, a section of the ice can no longer hold its own weight and snaps off, crashing down with incredible force. Calving is a dynamic and loud phenomenon that often triggers significant waves. It is a normal part of a glacier’s life cycle, and very common in the warmer summer months.
