“I JUST DON’T FEEL COMFORTABLE FLYING THIS THING AROUND” PILOTS DECLARE EMERGENCY An Envoy Air crew operating for American Airlines declared an emergency after reporting a problem with the captain’s control yoke. The Boeing 757 was on a scheduled flight from Frankfurt when the pilot on his last flight went on a sightseeing flight over his childhood home in the Westman Islands without the knowledge or permission of the company. Chief Flight Officer at Icelandair Linda Gunnarsdóttir said in a statement, "This is just a very serious matter that we will look into here internally. It's just the case in aviation that everything is very rigid in work processes, checklists and other things like that, what we do in normal passenger flights, and it doesn't fall within that framework." Linda says she expects passengers to have been informed about the sightseeing flight, but she cannot say that yet. She is also unable to comment at this time on the consequences for the pilot, who is leaving the company. The matter is, as previously stated, under consideration by the company.

The other two passengers, his wife Carolyn Bessette, and her sister Lauren, also perished. The inquest pointed to a loss of control by the pilot - JFK Jr himself - with his inexperience as a major factor. The NTSB enquiry concluded that Kennedy fell victim to spatial disorientation while descending over water at night and lost control of the aircraft. Kennedy did not hold an instrument rating, and therefore he was only certified to fly under visual flight rules (VFR). At the time, the weather and lighting conditions were such that all basic landmarks were obscured, making visual flight challenging, though it was still legally permissible.
