Nothing tickles your baby’s funny bone like the unexpected. This dad has his baby in stitches over a combination of unusual sights and sounds. First there’s the ripping of the newspaper. Not only is this not what dad typically does with paper, but it makes a great new sound as it rips. Second is the grunting sound of dad himself. Finally, rather than picking things up off the floor (his usual), dad is throwing the discarded paper everywhere. Talk about comic gold. At its most basic it’s the same thing that makes you laugh at a comedian. They set up a joke and the draw your laughter with a punchline that goes in an unexpected direction. Reading with your baby is about so much more than the book. It’s a time for bonding and connection. For laughter, love, and language learning… There are so many great things happening as this father and daughter share a board book together. Watch our hero, as she splits her attention between the book and her father, turning her adoring gaze to his face after each and every page. Dad is a fantastic narrator, reenacting the book’s animal sounds with enthusiasm. And let not leave out the fact that this is a shared tummy time activity (which, by the looks of it, is soon to be a precursor to some major crawling). An older video I ran across today, it does a good job explaining why some soils can get by on .3 units of N and the next soil needs 1 lb of added N to create a bushel. Obviously this is a deeper topic then what is covered in this 2 minutes, but it’s an important part of it.

When we make financial investments, we consider their success in terms of “return on investment.” When it comes to investing your time as the parent of a young child, you’re wise to think the same way. In my book you’d be hard pressed to find a smarter investor than this dad. As he and his little one unpack the groceries together, let’s acknowledge up front that this probably isn’t the fastest way of getting the job done. It probably took 2-3 minutes longer than it might have had dad done so himself. But what an investment he’s making with that time. By supporting our hero’s participation, Dad is not only communicating that baby is a competent contributor, but that the work of a family is shared. Notice as well how he’s also introducing new vocabulary with every item removed from the bag: quiche, steak, shampoo… it’s fantastic for language development. And after each item is handed off, Dad is modeling courtesy… thanking his child over and over again in ways that are imprinting right onto our hero’s developing brain. Meet the palmar grasp! Juggling both his infant daughter and a load of laundry, this dad - shared to TT by thesingingrealtoralex - managed to briefly lose track of a t-shirt… only to find it was held tightly in his daughter’s hand. It’s a wonderful illustration of the palmar grasp, a reflex common to infants 6 months and under. When something stimulates your baby’s palm, be it a finger, a rattle, or… a t-shirt, their fist will close tightly around it. This primitive reflex is understood to be a survival mechanism, assisting newborns to instinctively - and involuntarily - cling to their parents. It can be surprisingly strong, but never rely on it to ensure your baby’s safety, as it can also be released without warning.
