We have a ๐—ก๐—ข-๐—›๐—œ๐—ง๐—ง๐—˜๐—ฅ in District Final actionโ€ผ๏ธ 2028 LHP Bryce Besgrove was dominant for #5 (D2) Clay Baseball (21-7), leading the Eagles to a 1-0 win over #16 St. Francis de Sales Athletics (16-13-1). Besgrove worked quickly and efficiently all night, pounding the zone and trusting his defense behind him. The #17 ranked prospect in Ohioโ€™s 2028 class threw 76 of 108 pitches for strikes, striking out five while walking three in the no-hit performance. 2027 1B Aiden Berryman delivered the gameโ€™s biggest swing with a two-out RBI single to CF in the 2nd inning, bringing home 2028 C Brannan Vargas, who reached earlier in the inning on a 7-pitch walk. 2027 RHP Tommy kept St. Francis within striking distance all game long. The junior righty went the distance, allowing just one unearned run on six hits and three walks while striking out five. The duo of Besgrove and 2028 RHP Landon Echelberry is making a strong case as one of the top 1-2 punches in the state. In Clayโ€™s two district wins, the pair combined for 14 innings, allowing just one hit and zero runs with 13 strikeouts. Clay moves on to face #12 (D2) Big Walnut Baseball in regional action on Wednesday (6/3) at Grove City HS. The right-hander kept Defiance off balance throughout four strong innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out two. 2028 RHP Miles Wolf slammed the door over the final two innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit in an impressive relief appearance. 2026 SS/3B James Bucci impacted the game on both sides of the ball for the Preppers. A memorable matchup for the Division 7 title saw Ohio's career-scoring leader try his best to give Cornerstone Christian the crown, but undefeated Russia would cap off the program's 1st-ever championship season with a 74-57 victory at UD Arena in Dayton. The Raiders (29-0) have been building up to this season with 11 senior members of the roster making their 3rd consecutive Final Four appearance. They looked like the more complete team in the opening minutes by building a 20-14 cushion heading into the second quarter, but that's when Quinn Kwasniak began to take matters into his own hands. The Army commit put up 15 of his game-high 38 points in the frame, cashing in a pair of logo 3-pointers that fueled the Patriots (21-9) crowd and dazzled everyone else in attendance. CCA would trim the deficit to 38-34 by the halftime break but failed to keep momentum out of the locker room. A big 3rd quarter from Braylon Cordonnier, where he scored 10 of his team-best 21 points, helped the Raiders create some separation on the scoreboard heading into the final stanza. On the strength of a 9-0 run midway through the fourth quarter, Russia would put the game away with three players finishing the night with 14+ points. An emotional crowd watched as the final seconds fell off the clock, ensuring the Raiders a perfect season in dominating fashion. The win is the 1,000th in program history for Russia, who have accumulated an impressive 81-6 overall record over the last 3 seasons. Kwasniak finished his career with a state record 3,341 points. My experience as a Defenders fan going to STL America's Center & The Dome for an away game. This was a solo trip, did not bring my family on this one. The St. Louis Battlehawks home games truly are one of the special environments for United Football League. Iโ€™ve been to 4 AWAY games for DC Defenders over the last 12 months and the environment for this one was fired up! They definitely should NOT move STL to a soccer stadium if they keep showing out like they did yesterday. I got to my hotel at 1AM on game day after a late flight from the west coast. I woke up 6 hours later, walked towards the stadium and randomly caught the STL player walk-ins. Then, I walked over to the tailgate and met up with The Bottom Line and enjoyed some mimosas and breakfast burritos with Ed Ploeger and his gang. Thanks for the hospitality! I was able to get him a signed Sam Kidd jersey as a thanks for all he does for the UFL community! After the tailgate, got in for gate drop at 0930, and went straight down to the field. I was able to say hi to a few players and talk with Steven McCrane as his son was nailing 50+ yard field goals with ease. Chatted up and made peace with a few STL fans around me. Once the game started, they had the place LOUD, and my watch kept alerting me that my hearing was getting damaged ๐Ÿคฃ . Being there for the first ever 4 point field goal by Matt McCrane made the travel worth it. After the home fans had a few rounds of beers, the heckling began (which was expected), but I had to pop about 6 beach balls/๐ŸŽˆ as I became the ๐ŸŽฏ for drunk fans as the only DC fan in the section. I tossed the balls back a few times until I immediately got hit with about 3 balls in a row. So that part was a bit of a let down, as I was just trying to enjoy a game. The halftime show was great. Overall, the game experience itself left something to be desired with the penalties and getting harassed by fans who were clearly recording trying to get rage bait engagement on ๐ŸŽฅ. Probably wonโ€™t be going back to a STL game again, but Iโ€™m glad got to check it out! Pregame/Tailgate: 5/5 Halftime: 5/5 Game experience: 3/5 Getting to/from stadium: 5/5

Soccer is booming in the United States and World Cup viewership shows there is MASSIVE interest, but it will never be the priority and always play 5th fiddle to the Big 4 sports in America unless Americans fundamentally change their approach to youth sports. American Soccer is behind the rest of the world for 3 reasons: 1. Cultural Sporting DNA In the USA, Soccer competes in a crowded field of Football, Basketball, Baseball and Hockey instead of dominating like abroad. Europe and the rest of the world built soccer through community clubs, local pride and it being their default sport. They are born with a soccer ball on their feet. 2. Pay-to-Play Barrier In the USA most youth are priced out of playing because the cost to be on the team is too expensive. Currently there is a 14% decline in youth soccer participation between ages 6 to 12. Europe and the rest of worldโ€™s accessible club model keeps more kids in the game longer. 3. Less participation in the sport An all time high 16.8 million youth played outdoor soccer in the USA in 2025, but per capita the USA is far behind other European countries like Belgium which has a 3x higher rate of participation for its population size. For American soccer to catch up, it has to change its sporting culture focus to development instead of making money and lower the cost barrier for participation through state and government funded clubs over the next 20 years. Development needs to be the priority, not maximizing how much money can be made off the athlete and their parents. Instead of focusing on the old statement of โ€œif our best athletes playedโ€, focus on making the best athletes want to keep playing and the ones who do play the beautiful game better at it. Then and only then can we find our Erling Haaland, Lamine Yamal, Messi, Ronaldo or Jude Bellingham. We have to build the structure for them to develop in. #FIFAWorldCup #FIFAWorldCup2026 #Football #Soccer #RG3 #OuttaPocket #USA

In case you didn't know mode: The only player in Europe to have an "era of Tekken". The Ryan Hart Era of Tekken was between 1996 - 2012. During this lengthy 16 year period, there was no man in all of Europe who was more feared across all Tekken games than Ryan Hart. Ryan would often rack up 100+ wins or more during arcade sessions and is the only person in Tekken history to win National and European championships on every Tekken 3, 4, 5, 6 and Tekken Tag. Ryan Hart's reign of terror also extended to North America where in 2001, despite having multiple characters in his arsenal, Ryan saw the competition and decided to display the Korean style of Mishima play, which had been taught to him by Bong Bong from South Korea, and Ryan defeated every single North American player he played against, nobody from NA was able to topple him. Ryan also beat US Champion; JOP in a close deathmatch that ended 26-21 in Ryan's favour. Ryan's two single defeats at this time were at the Electric Cancel 3 tournament, where Jang SuWon from South Korea defeated Ryan 3-2 and JOP defeated Ryan 3-1 in tournament, however there was controversy around the JOP win as Ryan's RP button visibly stopped working mid tournament, combos were dropped mid flow, 112's on hit not completed, etc. However despite his 3rd place finish, Ryan had successfully began his reign of terror extension in North America. When Ryan revisited the US for Virtua Fighter on the East Coast twice, again he was dominant against all North American competition. Nobody could put a lid on Ryan's ferocity, reaction time, execution, situational awareness and clutch factor. Ryan also had the largest character usage. Ryan Hart placed Top 3 then Top 4 two years in a row at EVOLUTIONCHAMPIONSHIPSERIES, while simultaneously consistently securing Grand Finals on Tekken at the same time. (Securing Top 2 and Top 3 on two EVO main stage titles at the same time is noteworthy. The next year at EVO Ryan secured top 4 on VF and actually won Tekken at the same time while getting 5th on a third main stage EVO title.) In 2003 Ryan defeated Kim Bong Min from Korea in a 4 hour deathmatch hosted at Castel's House in front of a live audience, becoming the first person in the world to defeat a Korean Tekken champion in a deathmatch. After news of this travelled around North America, every single NA player that had previously challenged Ryan Hart and set up money matches, all rescinded their challenge, during Ryan Hart's time in NA in 2003, not a single NA player would challenge Ryan Hart. People feared Ryan and in pre EVO polls every year, Ryan Hart was always predicted an EVO Grand Final finish even before the tournament bracket had been drawn up. During the next three years in a row at Evolution Championship Series, Ryan Hart went undefeated vs NA, Japan and EU in Tekken Tag. Not a single person from North America, Japan or Europe ever beat Ryan Hart on Tekken Tag at any EVO ever. After these years EVO replaced Tekken Tag in favour of the newer Tekken 5 game, which made sense. In the Tekken Tag domain Ryan Hart went down as one of the all time kings that ever touched the game, that was literally never beaten by anybody from Japan, America or Europe on the EVO stage. Ryan Hart got to Grand Finals back to back 3 years in a row and either won it or lost to a top Korean player. He again won it in 2008, this time on Tekken 5 DR. Ryan came out of Tekken retirement for a one-off exhibition match on Tekken 7 vs RIP in 2019, which Ryan won 10-3. There have been challengers to Ryan's throne that came and went, but no player in the world has stood the test of time on multiple fighting games since the 90's like Ryan has. #EVO #Evo2025 #TEKKEN #VirtuaFighter

Goldeneye is a great โ€œbetter to ask for forgiveness than get permissionโ€ story. Released in August 1997, the game made $250m on a $2m budget. A major reason was its insanely fun multiplayer modeโ€ฆwhich Nintendo didnโ€™t ask for and developers snuck into the game at the last second. Many years later, Steve Ellis โ€” a game developer for Rare โ€” explained what went down: โžก๏ธ โ€œOne of the things that always strikes me as crazy in retrospect is that until something like March or April of 1997, there wasn't a multiplayer mode at all. It hadn't even been started. It really was put in at the last minute โ€“ something you wouldn't dream of doing these days โ€“ and it was done without the knowledge or permission of the management at Rare and Nintendo. The first they knew about it was when we showed it to them working. However โ€“ since the game was already late by that time, if we hadn't done it that way, it probably never would have happened.โ€ โฌ…๏ธ Rare had a team of only 10 core developers and it took 2.75 years to make the game, which actually came out 18 months after โ€œGoldeneyeโ€ the film. Nintendo briefly cancelled the game but then pushed to release it (and expectations were low). Goldeneye was an instant hit with innovative stealth play, remote-control bombs and sniper rifles. Gaming mags (IGN, GamePro) have called it N64โ€™s best multiplayer game, which is wild when you consider the platform also had Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. Goldeneye became N64โ€™s 3rd best-selling title ever (also impressive because 7 of the top 9 are all original Nintendo IP). 1. Super Mario 64 (12m units) 2. Mario Kart 64 (10m) ๐Ÿšจ3. Goldeneye (9m) 4. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (8m) 5. Super Smash Bros (6m) 6. Pokรฉmon Stadium (5m) 7. Donkey Kong 64 (5m) 8. Diddy Kong Racing (5m) 9. Starfox 64 (4m) Most importantly: without the unapproved last-second addition of multi-player, I couldnโ€™t have spent 100s of hours being OddJob and smoking my unsuspecting friends with proximity mines.

In all my years of broadcasting, I'd never gotten emotional on air until tonight. It was impossible to hold back the tears. Jack Piccione of Tappan Zee lost his father suddenly last Sept. 1. Matthew Piccione died of a heart attack minutes after playing pickleball with friends. He was 51. Over the last three years, I got to know Matthew Piccione fairly well. One day back in 2023, he asked coach George Gaine for my number so he could call me just to say thank you for calling out Jack's contributions during Tappan Zee's championship run. Jack was a role player who averaged maybe 5 points a game as a freshman. But he started and never came off the court. "I know he doesn't score a lot of points," Matthew Piccione said. "But you are one of the only people who appreciates what he does for the team." Matthew Piccione kept a very low profile at games and reinforced in his son to be the emodiment of all the things that make Tappan Zee basketball different than any other program in the state. Play unselfish. Defend. Be coachable. Defend. Draw charges. Pass. Sacrifice for your teammates. And, of course, defend some more. Nobody in the history of Tappan Zee basketball since I have been covering has ever played that role better than Jack Piccione. He's the best best defensive player in the program and is on an elite level of players I've been around in Section 1. When Matthew died in September, I worried about Jack. I wondered what his senior season might be like. The person most responsible for instilling and reinforcing the values that made Jack great was now tragically gone. Tonight, Jack Piccione scored 5 points in the Section 1 Championship game. FIVE. Yet not only did his team because of his performance, I had the honor of handing him the MVP Trophy to prove it. In the final 90 seconds of the game, I shared the story of Matthew Piccione and his passing. You will hear the emotion in my voice. It's genuine, not because of any relationship I had with him. You just can't be a sports parent and not relate to loving your child and always wanting what's best for them. Because here's what I am going to tell you. And I really want all parents to read this and remember it: Your kids' youth - not just athletics, but all of it - is short and it's precious. You don't get this time back when it's over. It goes way too quick. And some don't even get to see it to the end. You have a choice: You can spend this period of their lives stressing about how many points they score, what awards or accolades they receive, begging people to vote in the online poll for Player of the Week, emailing the coach and complaining about playing time or lamenting the number of shots they get in a game. Go ahead. You can make all of that important for yourself and your child. Trust me, you won't be alone in doing so. Or you can do what Matthew Piccione did. Sit in the stands and enjoy watching your children compete. Teach them that it's team above all else, stress what it means to sacrifice and ensure them that, when you do those things and have success, the feeling of hanging a banner will far exceed any of the personal accolades think are important. And, sadly, God might choose that you won't be around to see it all anyway. Matthew didn't get to give his son a hug after he won tonight. And Jack didn't get to see the pride in his father's face. Think about that. If you are a parent, try to put your child in Jack's shoes. If God forbid your child was confronted with the same tragedy, you'd want them looking back on this sacred period of their lives the way Jack will forever recall them with his dad. Tonight was complete validation for Jack Piccione and all of the things his father always told him. Jack scored 5 points and won the MVP on his way to becoming the most decorated basketball player in Tappan Zee history. Nobody has ever won more in a TZ uniform than the most unselfish player they've ever had. He wouldn't trade his career with anyone, either. Take a moment to listen to myself and Pleasantville coach Nick Bonura from tonight's SportsEngine Play broadcast of DutchmenAthletics TZ Boys Basketball
