𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐤𝐮𝐫’𝐬 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭: This is a Serious Mistake. The Government should either Apologize or immediately clarify that it was an error. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐖𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠: • 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐀𝐜𝐭, 𝟏𝟗𝟔𝟕 repeatedly and deliberately distinguishes between “passports” and “travel documents”. They are not the same thing. • A Passport is not just permission to travel. When the Republic puts its seal on it, it is formally vouching to the world that the holder is one of its own citizens/nationals. • Section 20 of the same Act (which allows Passports for non-citizens only in rare public interest cases) actually proves the rule — Passports are meant for citizens. 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐤𝐮𝐫 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐝 • Foreign embassies could start demanding other proof of Citizenship before issuing Visas. This will create massive chaos for ordinary Indian Travellers and the Diaspora. • If a Passport is “𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭”, what happens to diplomatic and official passports issued to the Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India, Ministers, and Ambassadors? Does Their Diplomatic Immunity Suddenly Become Questionable? • 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞.
