As part of our ongoing efforts to light up and industrialise Delta State, today my team and I received a compelling presentation from the Group Managing Director of Power acumen Consulting Limited, Dr Engr Matthew Edevbie, on practical pathways to achieving sustainable power supply in our state. The journey towards reliable power is undoubtedly a long one; however, as a government, we remain committed to delivering integrated and sustainable solutions to address the power challenges facing our state. Going forward, while we acknowledge the value of the presentation and the insights shared, I have directed the Honourable Commissioner for Energy to immediately constitute a technical team to liaise with the Power acumen team, with the objective of developing practical and implementable solutions for the provision of stable electricity to our people.

The plan instead is to extract it on site, burn it in a local power plant, and use that electricity to mine bitcoin. The energy will be consumed at the source, because that route is simpler and more profitable. Taxes, regulation and grid constraints all add friction. The gas could power homes. It isn't. Because burning it on site makes more money. That is a damning indictment of UK energy policy.

- This project is a PPP project between the Imo State Government and the Egyptian energy company Madkour Group - The substation is owned by Orashi Electrical Company Limited, formed in 2024 - The Orashi substation is located in New Owerri and is the pilot initiative for "Light Up Imo" which is supposed to bring power to all 27 Local Governments in Imo State - It reduces reliance on the national grid and allows Imo State to be energy independent and sufficient - it paves the way for 24/7 power to be established in Imo, leveraging its gas supply. Kudos to Governor Hope Uzodimma Hope Uzodimma for this initiative. We hope other Eastern Governors will copy Imo and Abia to electrify the region.

I am pleased to learn that the first-ever Independent Power Project (IPP) in Ekiti State has been completed and commissioned by my successor, Governor Biodun Oyebanji Biodun Oyebanji. Two years ago, we initiated this project in response to the very poor #electricity supply to Ekiti through the national grid system. We recognised that the only way to prevent this issue from further negatively impacting our socioeconomic and industrial growth was to provide a significant and innovative intervention. This led us to enter into a partnership with Fenchurch Power Ltd Fenchurch Group NG to independently generate power for the consumption of the state, in addition to what is obtainable from the national grid. With the success of this project, I believe that investors within the power sector will take advantage of the "willing seller, willing buyer" template.

The strategic military tactic of using air raids to target power stations—aiming to cripple an enemy’s electrical grid to weaken their industrial capacity—has been employed in conflicts from World War II right through to the most recent regional wars. If Australia were ever attacked, the first thing any competent enemy would do is hammer is our electricity generating infrastructure. They would seek to bomb our coal-fired power stations into oblivion. But in Australia today, the enemy is already inside the gates. We don’t need foreign bombers. We have the Net Zero mafia and the climate cultists doing the job for them, as they systematically blow up our reliable coal-fired power stations. The latest casualty is the Liddell Power Station, owned by AGL. For AGL, shutting it down and “blowing it up” was a cold, anti-competitive profit-maximising decision. By deliberately reducing supply, they drove up the wholesale electricity prices they were receiving from their other generating assets, making the company far more profitable with Liddell destroyed than running. AGL even rejected a $250 million offer from a competitor who wanted to buy Liddell and keep it operating. The station was literally worth more to AGL dead than alive. This is textbook anti-competitive behaviour by a company with substantial market power. It should be illegal. Yet when I raised this directly with the ACCC, they refused to anything. The brutal bottom line is this: if it weren’t for the deranged Net Zero obsession and the suicidal Paris Accord (which the USA has abandoned and China simply ignores), a brand-new, high-efficiency, low-emissions coal-fired power station should have been commissioned at Liddell back in 2018 for around $4 billion. Instead, we’ve already wasted over $40 billion on the energy-destroying white elephant called Snowy 2.0. We are not being invaded. The enemy is already inside the gates. We are committing national energy suicide — aided and abetted by our own politicians, bureaucrats, and corporate rent-seekers.

But as God would have it, 3 weeks after becoming President in 2023, he signed the new electricity act to allow states to take ownership of the electricity market in their domains. I am a fan of decentralised electricity markets. I don't believe that the electricity rate per kWh should be constant across the country. The cost of electricity per kWh in California is different from Washington DC. The rate is different in London and Bristol. The market cost of electricity should be determined by local factors. Infrastructure, transmission cost ( distance ) distribution cost, demand and pricing strategies should differ. Niger state just like Washington is the Hydro power leader in Nigeria. The market realities should be different in Niger State. The per kWh rate of electricity is cheaper in Washington than the National US average. I would like to see how states, especially the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission manage their electricity market with the new tariffs. Govt's role in electricity generation, distribution and supply is limited. Govt doesn't generate electricity in Europe and other developed countries. Private players do and for them to thrive, we must create a conducive market.

Solar and wind are sold as cheaper than coal, gas or nuclear using a number called LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy). But LCOE is a junk metric. It pretends that one-megawatt-hour of intermittent power is the same as one-megawatt-hour of reliable power. It isn't. When the sun doesn't shine or the wind doesn't blow, you still need electricity. So backup plants (coal, gas or nuclear) must run in the background, ready to fire instantly. LCOE fails to count that cost. It also ignores the miles of transmission lines for remote wind farms, the giant storage systems to cover lulls, the stabilizers to keep frequency steady, and the massive overbuild needed just to survive bad weather weeks.These hidden costs explode as wind and solar take over more of the grid. On paper, LCOE makes these renewables look cheap. In reality, they drive up costs system-wide. That's why nations with the most wind and solar have the highest electricity prices. LCOE isn't just misleading, it's a lie.

Today in Edo Central, Practical Governance was on full display. I began the day inspecting progress at the site of the Edo State College of Nursing, Health Sciences and Technology in Udomi—a visionary project signed just last month. I am pleased to report that work has commenced in earnest, and we are on course for its timely completion and commissioning. This institution will play a vital role in strengthening our healthcare and human capital development agenda. From there, I proceeded to inspect the newly completed 2.5MVA injection sub-station in Udomi, Esan Central LGA—an electrification project that fulfills a major campaign promise. With this infrastructure, over six communities including Udomi I, Ujabhole I, Unogbo, Idimoghodor, Ibhioloulu, and Afuda will enjoy reliable power supply for the first time in decades. This is more than electricity; it's a spark of hope and economic empowerment for thousands. I wrapped up the day assessing remedial works on the Benin-Ekpoma Road, a critical route for commerce and movement across our state. Easing the burden of traffic on this corridor is essential, and we are making real progress. I thank the Edo State House of Assembly for their support in actualizing the College of Nursing and Health Science, and I commend our technical partners, including BEDC, for working with us to deliver power to our people. Yet Australians are being forced to sacrifice our living standards, pay skyrocketing power bills, and lose manufacturing jobs on the altar of net zero. I asked Minister Wong what penalties she’s threatened against China for doing the opposite of what her government demands from Australians. The answer? None. Instead of holding China accountable, this government is destroying our cheap, reliable coal generation to satisfy foreign dictates from the UN, the World Economic Forum, and the Paris Agreement. Minister Wong admitted the market has turned against coal because of policy instability—but that instability was created by the very politicians pushing net zero.
