Only German cars. Past, present and your average car is boring. I bring out all the exciting cars from Germany. BMW | Audi | Mercedes | Porsche | VW | Alpina

The M550i uses a very different logic. Its 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 N63TU3 produces around 523 hp and is paired with all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission tuned for both speed and refinement. Compared with a full M5, the M550i is not positioned as a flagship. It is positioned as a fast 5 Series that sounds more like a usual V8. The engineering emphasis is on torque delivery, stability and comfort rather than maximum lap time. The M550i shows how BMW used to integrate high output V8 power into its core range instead of isolating it inside a specialist model.

Lamborghini Murciélago. This is the V12 era done properly. 6.2 and later 6.5 litres, they scream like banshees. Sounds better than the Diablo. Looks better than the Aventador. Manual versions exist, and that alone makes it special and super valuable. It’s aggressive looking, but the style is sinister, maybe because Batman drove one. For production V12 Lamborghinis, this is the one that nailed it. I recommend listening to all of the variants.

Mercedes created the E500 to provide a saloon capable of continuous high-speed operation, requiring Porsche’s chassis revisions to support the 5.0-litre V8. The E500 exists because Mercedes wanted a saloon that could travel at sustained autobahn speeds without stress. Porsche’s involvement widened the track, revised the suspension and helped integrate the 5.0-litre V8’s 322 HP. Its reputation today comes from that engineering depth, not from theatrics, but from how solid and consistent the car still feels. Mercedes 500E / E500 W124 I know but, we sometimes want to see someone ripping it.

Audi RS4 B7. Peak RS4 for many enthusiasts. The 4.2 FSI naturally aspirated V8, around 414 hp, paired with a manual gearbox only. Audi was serious about this car. And unlike the M3 or C63 at the time, the RS4 had Quattro AWD, which gave it insane traction. The engine revs high and sounds incredible, although owners know about the carbon build up issue these engines can develop and that they love their timing chain jobs, so missing them just hurts the engine. Still one of the most loved RS cars Audi ever built.

Audi’s first V8 platform was tuned with more mechanical grit than luxury polish. Before the A8, Audi tried something brave. The D11 V8 with the 3.6 was their first true push into the luxury arena, but it didn’t act like a luxury car. This was built to feel overbuilt, almost rally bred. People forget how raw these early V8s were, how much Audi was fighting for identity. This car wasn’t following anyone. It was Audi proving they could build something serious even before the world believed it. Audi V8, D11.

An SUV that embarrassed Ferraris at the Nürburgring. BMW made one. Just one. The SUV that lapped the Nürburgring faster than a Ferrari 550. 6.0L V12 from the McLaren F1 GTR. 700 HP. Manual. Rear-wheel drive. BMW made one just because they're engineers we're bored and gave steroids to cars at the time

The Audi S1 was a pocket-sized quattro hot hatch that felt almost too interesting for its era. Short wheelbase, serious traction, and a level of drivetrain character that Audi never really returned to in this size. It sat against cars like the F56 Mini Cooper JCW and the Polo WRC, small performance machines built around real intent rather than just numbers. The S1 disappeared quietly, replaced by softer, more standardised models. Today the most powerful model shares the powertrain with the Polo GTI, yet itself is not positioned as a true hot hatch. It’s one of those cars that makes you wonder why brands stop making the fun versions first, even when the formula clearly worked.

Mercedes 300CE-24. One of the best looking coupes Mercedes made from that era. The pillarless C124 design alone makes it special. This version uses the M104 24-valve straight six instead of the 12v, which was one of the better engines offered in the W124 lineup. Smooth, strong and very much part of classic Mercedes engineering. There were a lot of good powertrains available in these coupes and even an AMG, but the 300CE-24 is a sweet spot. Manual versions also existed, which makes the car even more interesting today, although they’re quite rare. Sometimes I still think a 500CE with the M119 V8 would have made this car even better.

A hot hatch with a straight-six and manual, the recipe nobody else dared make. The forgotten hot hatch that dared to be different. While rivals went smaller and turbocharged, BMW gave the 1 Series its naturally aspirated 3.0-litre N52 straight-six. 265 HP, rear-wheel drive, and a six-speed manual, what an amazing idea created by Bavarians, the recipe no other manufacturer was willing to serve. It made the E82 130i one of the purest driver’s hatches of its time, and today a cult classic among enthusiasts. BMW 130i M Sport (E82)

When performance SUVs started to become a trend, BMW built this V8 monster in response to ML55. When BMW launched the X5 in 1999, it invented the idea of the “Sport Activity Vehicle.” But in 2004, they went one step further with the 4.8is. Under the bonnet sat a naturally aspirated N62 V8 making 360 HP which is in the facelifted model in place of the older M62, paired with sport suspension, unique styling, and massive 20-inch wheels. It was one of the first SUVs that could actually handle twisty roads better than the average bloated and slower lumps. The 4.8is came 6 years after AMG and M performance SUVs became mainstream as of E70 X5M. It paved the way for the X5 M and every other high-performance SUV that followed.

Choosing a 924 meant valuing balance over prestige. Against the Porsche 911 of the same era, the 924 is more approachable, affordable and less intimidating, thanks to its front-engine, rear-transaxle layout. It delivered predictable handling and everyday usability rather than raw rear-engine character. Ownership here reflected practicality within the Porsche brand. It wasn’t about chasing the flagship. It was about enjoying the engineering philosophy in a purer, lighter format.

It doesn’t sound good. It sounds unreal. The E60 M5’s V10 was a Formula 1 engine. Nothing sounds like it, not before or after. The E60 M5’s S85B50 V10 was born from BMW’s F1 research, ten throttle bodies, 8,250 rpm redline and a flat-plane–like firing order that gave it that razor-edged howl. Every gear change from the SMG-III gearbox adds a bark of mechanical aggression, making the car feel alive even at idle. The titanium valves, semi-dry sump, and ultra-short stroke allowed it to rev like a race engine. No turbos, no filters, just raw combustion turned into music. BMW has never made anything like it again.

The F31 335d is an estate that looks calm, sensible, and entirely normal. That is exactly why it works so well as an overachiever. With around 313 HP from the twin-turbo N57 and a huge wave of torque, it moves in a way people do not expect from a diesel Touring. 0–100 km/h in roughly 4.9 seconds puts it firmly into performance territorya and that is still stock. Though nothing about the styling suggests speed. It is not dramatic, and it does not ask for attention. That is the point. It delivers real pace inside a shape most people associate with practicality and restraint.

The forgotten compact that still feels more BMW than half the modern range. A short wheelbase, hydraulic steering, and that early 2000s chassis balance that made every roundabout feel like an invitation. This was the era when you could get a hot hatchback with a six cylinder, instead of an overboosted 4 cylinder. Still fast and when you wanted it, can be loud. Just the purest entry point into BMW’s old school DNA. BMW 130i, E81.

The forgotten gem of the E60 generation. Everyone remembers the M5, but the 550i was the understated V8 choice. 4.8 litres, plenty of torque, and everyday usability wrapped in Bangle-era design. It delivered smooth power with just enough edge to keep things exciting. A perfect balance of luxury and performance without drawing too much attention. The E60 550i was proof that BMW’s V8 magic wasn’t only reserved for the M badge. But don't get too excited for cheap performance, N62 V8 engines have problems of their own too, so bad you have to disassemble the entire front of the car to get access to a coolant pipe. Some say that the maintenance is worth the tears.

The full size luxury sedan that humiliated race cars at 24 h of Spa. The car that made AMG famous. 6.8L V8 stuffed into a luxury sedan. 2nd place at Spa 24 Hours in 1971 against lighter, purpose-built racers. It wasn’t built for the track — but it owned it anyway. And god that V8.
