🚨WEIRD PAY ALERT🚨 We have ABANDONMENT!!! Also, there is an irony this happened in Philadelphia and it was a Cincinnati Reds prospect that did it! This is from the 4th inning of today's Future's Game. Alfredo Duno of the Chattanooga Lookouts grounds a ball to third, and the throw from Caleb Bonemer up the line, and caught by first baseman Ralphy Velazquez. Velazquez has the ball and is straddling the baseline, so there is no where for Duno to go, so he basically says "screw it" and leaves the basepath and heads to the dugout. You can't see it here, but the first base umpire made the two-handed sweeping gesture for out of the baseline, but since the player isn't so much avoiding the tag as he is just heading to the dugout without completing the play, this is abandonment. You score it just the same as if the out was completed in regular fashion, so this is a 5-3 groundout. #MLBFuturesGame #RingTheBell #ATOBTTR

I want to go over last night’s doozy in San Francisco because there is A LOT of confusion about it. In a 6-6 tie between the visiting Los Angeles Angels and the home and batting SFGiants with Jesus Rodriguez on third, Luis Arraez on second, and Bymryce Eldridge on first, Rafael Devers hit what is normally a ground rule double. In-game, this was scored as a ground rule double and the final score was determined by the scorer to be 8-6. The issue is there is a rule for this exact situation, which is rule 9.06 (f) “(f) Subject to the provisions of Rule 9.06(g), when a batter ends a game with a safe hit that drives in as many runs as are necessary to put his team in the lead, the Official Scorer shall credit such batter with only as many bases on his hit as are advanced by the runner who scores the winning run, and then only if the batter runs out his hit for as many bases as are advanced by the runner who scores the winning run. Rule 9.06(f) Comment: The Official Scorer shall apply this rule even when the batter is theoretically entitled to more bases because of being awarded an “automatic” extra-base hit under various provisions of Rules 5.05 and 5.06(b)(4).” It’s the comment that is the key element. Even though this is normally an extra base hit for two bases, since the winning run was on third base, he only needed one base to score, so the batter, Devers, by rule can only be credited with one base. I believe support got involved very quickly, because within 10 minutes of me posting about this mistake, the score was adjusted to 7-6, and Devers was credited with a single. Now, Arraez never touched home anyway, but that doesn’t matter as even if he did, by rule, his run wouldn’t have mattered, as the score was 7-6 regardless. I have seen some folks saying the Los Angeles Angels appealed Arraez not touching home and that’s why the score was adjusted. I can confirm that this didn’t happen. I’ve had a ton of questions regarding today’s first inning in Kansas City regarding the Philadelphia Phillies at Kansas City Royals, and why all six runs were earned despite an error. The error by Turner is a throwing error, and while a good throw would have ended the inning, this is NOT an assumed out error because of the out at second base (this is where you don’t assume a double play). So, even without this error, all six runs would have scored, so the six earned runs against Christopher Sánchez is correct. EDIT: adding this, but again, the error here is only for the extra base advancement, not for being safe at first, as the batter officially was safe on a fielder’s choice. The only way you could have an error on this is if the throw was a good one and on target, and the first baseman missed or dropped it. Here is the play folks are asking about, and I don't see an error here. Triolo doesn't make an attempt at the runner going to second, so it cannot be a fielder's choice, and the struggle to get the ball out of his glove isn't an error unless there is a complete loss of contact/bobble with air, and I don't see that either, and Happ then beat out the play at first. I don't see where the error is because Happ is on the base before the ball gets to first. There is an error for the advancements after the bad throw, but I have a single and not an assumed out here.

OK, I have a definitive word on the CJ Abrams play from today's Pittsburgh Pirates at Washington Nationals game after talking with Elias Sports Bureau on this. This play will stay as a sacrifice fly. The originial ruling of NOT a sacrifice fly was for the exact same reason that I thought, which is that the infielder is not running into the outfield, which is year's past would have been correct As it was explained to me, in past years, an infielder had to be running almost in a straight line towards the outfield wall to be considered "running in the outfield". Here, since he is running, and he ends up further away from home (157 feet) than when he started (145 feet), this is going to count as a sacrifice fly. That definition is changing, in part from this play to help bring greater consistency, and to take some of the guesswork out of it (the argument that he is running into the outfield as opposed to more parallel). Now, folks all the time ask "why doesn't MLB publish the OS Manual" and I always say because it is a living document that can have the wording change, and the wording for this play will be modified to something like "more towards the outfield wall than towards home plate" to eliminate any confusion. The big key to this play is that he was running on a full sprint. Also, and this is helpful for me, but for all fly ball outs that score a run, Elias Saba reviews to ensure consistency. So, yes, it's a sacrifice fly, and now that I have that info from Elias themselves, that sort of settles this one. This is a ball hit by Mookie Betts of the Los Angeles Dodgers and it was ruled an error on Jake Mangum of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The only thing I can think of is that Mookie didn't appeal, because this is a base hit, it's always been a base hit, and it will continue to be a base hit. Except on this one play. There is no way a sliding attempt like this is an error. I know Mangum broke the wrong way, but that doesn't factor it ... it's the catch, the physical catch, and there is ZERO CHANCE this is ordinary effort. I know we talk changes here, but this non-change is the most confounding one for me since Aaron Judge's first career walk-off hit, which was the most obvious fielder's choice of all time, but because it was the last play of the season, it didn't get appealed or changed.

You can see Ty France lose this in the sun and peel away, and Cronenworth struggles as well, misjudges it and has to dive. Only five, watch isn’t terrible lol. Here is the play with Abrams at the plate. This is a throw on the run for Chapman and I would have had this as a single and an error as this to me is above ordinary effort. The issue is the scorer might think CHAPMAN can make that play, but it’s ordinary effort for the average fielder at that position.

Ceddanne Rafaela hits a fly to center and both runners forget there was one out and just ran without tagging up. After the ball was caught, the Blue Jays threw the ball in and doubled off the runner at first, for an inning ending double play. Since the runner from third scored BEFORE the third out, the run counts because this is not a force, but a timing play. What Toronto SHOULD have done is after the out at first, they legally could have thrown to third and appealed that that runner left early. This would have been the elusive FOURTH OUT and this would have replaced the third out and nullified the run. Once all the infielders crossed the foul line, the ability to appeal the play was lost, and once that happened, the run was officially counted. #DieryWater #BlueJays50

🚨CYCLE SCORING ALERT🚨 Tons of folks sent this one in from the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets game, with Bryce Harper completing the cycle with this fifth inning triple. I believe this was scored correctly as a triple. This falls under Rule 9.06; Determining the Value of Base Hits. The key is Harper never slowed down at all and was going for third the whole time. One of the things the scorer has to determine is whether or not Harper went to third on the throw or not. He obviously was going for third regardless, and the fact that he would have been out is inconsequential here. The OS Manual states this: “Had the bases been empty, would the batter-runner have attempted to advance the extra base? If not, the value of the base hit should not include the additional base.” The answer on this one is yes, Harper would have ATTEMPTED to advance. Doesn’t say if he would have been safe. 🚨CONFIRMED NON-CHANGE🚨 I can now confirm that Cincinnati Reds JJ Bleday's appeal for a hit against Milwaukee Brewers was denied, and the original ruling of a missed catch error was upheld, meaning the four runs in the inning scored against Jacob Misiorowski will stay unearned. As a reminder, the play made by the third baseman was well above ordinary effort, but since he had a good, on-target throw to first, the only issue is whether the first baseman, Jake Bauers, dropped the ball/missed the catch. While it is extremely close, the ruling is that Bauers could have caught the ball a millisecond before Bleday hit the base (which you can see in the screen capture). Here is the full Ernie Clement/Gunnar Henderson play from today’s Baltimore Orioles at Toronto Blue Jays game, and Dan Shulman really explains this well. I don’t see a tag attempt, and if you wanted to call what Henderson does a tag attempt, Clement stays within three feet of where he was at the time of the “attempt”, so I feel they got this right.

🚨WEIRD PLAY ALERT🚨 First, weird doesn’t do this justice. This is from Wednesday night’s game between AAA Albuquerque Isotopes at Reno Reno Aces … with one out B9, ABQ leads 4-3, but Reno has bases loaded. Connor Kaiser hits a gapper for a double and seemingly the win … BUT … R3 (Aramis Garcia) scores to make it 4-4 R2: (Christian Pache) runs into Ildemaro Vargas who ran on the field with a cell phone to record the celebration and accidentally knocked Pache over, which is unintentional interference. R1: (Andy Weber) stopped before third, and Kaiser rounded second and started to head to the celebration… BUT… Pache was called out (2-unassisted) so it was 4-4 … BUT … Topes CF Sam Hilliard thought the game was over on the hit so he flipped the ball over the fence to a kid … BUT … Since it was only 4-4, and coach/player interference is not a dead ball, flipping the ball into the stands is an error on Hilliard, and the penalty is the base you are going to at the time of the throw, plus another, meaning Weber, who stopped short of third, was awarded third, and then home to win the game. Final score … 5-4 Reno. Holy crap. Now, they will get the scoring fixed tomorrow (let’s face it this is a new one) but they will remove on of the RBIs from Kaiser, and add an error to Hilliard. The first runner is unearned because he reached on an error, and since Pache’s INT should have been the third out, Weber is also unearned. Absolutely the dumbest, silliest, best baseball ending to a game in a long, long time. Jimmy O'Brien and Close Call Sports & Umpire Ejection Fantasy League will have a field day. Here is why. If the ball goes through the glove, that would be considered an error on the fielder (this is a change from about 10 years ago) as the fielder is responsible for their own equipment, and the failure to keep it up is on them. But this didn’t go through the glove…it got stuck. Since Yorke couldn’t get it out, this is basically slow-handling, like a double-clutch trying to get a ball out of a glove.
