Carotene is NOT your Retinol, diva👇🏻 While often conflated especially in the new “Eat Your Skincare” TikTok trends that amass millions of views, beta-carotene (from carrots or sweet potatoes) is not equivalent to retinol (active vitamin A). Carotene is a provitamin A that requires enzymatic conversion to retinol: a process that is inefficient and easily impaired by hypothyroidism, stress or nutrient deficiencies. Excess carotene accumulates in tissues, interfere with the conversion of cholesterol to progesterone—your main beauty and youth protective hormone—(a process that requires adequate thyroid function and VITAMIN A) and antagonise thyroid function, much like unsaturated fats. This can lead to hormonal imbalances and impaired energy metabolism. Carotene is a provitamin A that requires enzymatic conversion to retinol: a process that is inefficient and easily impaired by hypothyroidism, stress or nutrient deficiencies. Excess carotene accumulates in tissues, interfere with the conversion of cholesterol to progesterone—your main beauty and youth protective hormone—(a process that requires adequate thyroid function and VITAMIN A) and antagonise thyroid function, much like unsaturated fats. This can lead to hormonal imbalances and impaired energy metabolism. In contrast, retinol is preformed and bioavailable in animal foods like liver, egg yolks and full fat dairy, directly supporting steroidogenesis, oxidative metabolism, skin integrity, hormonal balance, beauty and longevity. Therefore, while raw carrot (in the context of Peat’s carrot salad) has unique detoxifying benefits and you should eat one raw carrot a day for those benefits, relying on carotene-rich plants for vitamin A is metabolically wrong, inadequate and, in excess, potentially counterproductive and damaging.
