The bright white light doesn’t come from the flame itself but from a fragile fabric mantle soaked in rare-earth oxides, mainly 99% thorium dioxide and 1% cerium dioxide. Heated by the kerosene flame, these oxides glow intensely in the visible spectrum while emitting little infrared heat. It was one of the most efficient forms of lighting before electricity.
