How corporate money, political agendas, and blind spectacle are quietly killing the soul of Indian storytelling, Tigmanshu Dhulia breaks it down. Taking the stage at the Rajendra Mathur Memorial Lecture, organized by the Editors Guild of India, filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia didn't pull any punches about where Bollywood is currently bleeding out. Addressing the state of the media and the film industry at the event, he laid bare how corporate money, massive hype, and rigid political ideology are systematically squeezing the soul out of mainstream cinema. His main gripe isn't just big budgets or crowd pleasing blockbusters. It’s that cheap spectacle has completely hijacked actual storytelling. When you look at massive hits today, the production values are through the roof, but try finding a coherent plot and you come up blank. Good writers are still out there, but they’re starved of real freedom, forced to churn out scripts that fit safe, market-tested moulds rather than genuine creative grit. Dhulia pointed out how things shifted noticeably after 2017, ushering in an era dominated by the violent, hyper-aggressive "alpha male" hero, where the entire narrative exists purely to stroke the protagonist's ego. On top of that, the heavy shadow of self-censorship and the constant fear of FIRs or social media backlashes have crippled creative courage. When filmmakers have to look over their shoulder before writing a single line of dialogue, independent thought dies. Art has always reflected society's biases, but when cinema becomes a direct vehicle for state-aligned propaganda or religious politics, it stops being art. Artists have every right to their political views, but when they lose the spine to question power, cinema stops holding up a mirror to our collective consciousness and becomes an echo chamber instead.
