The hinge mechanism in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold2 is an interesting engineering solution. The foldable screen needs a certain amount of curvature; otherwise, the screen can break. The hinge uses a special CAM structure with two ridge-shaped parts that interlock in stages, helping keep the device unfolded for Flex Mode. The Galaxy Z Fold2 also has stronger retention force, keeping the device unfolded at 180° and preventing it from accidentally closing. Because of the larger form factor, the Fold2 uses more CAM structures and springs than the Galaxy Z Flip, while still maintaining a small and intricate design

Hahn’s Calculating Machine ... 1770s. It was one of the first calculators to perform arithmetic operations. Hahn’s machine could add, subtract, multiply, and divide, with an 11-digit capacity. Each decimal position was represented by numbered wheels and interconnected gears. The machine used cylinders and stepped drums to carry out calculations... no electricity, no electronics. Only a small number were made because each required immense craftsmanship to build. An incredible piece of 18th-century engineering built entirely with mechanical precision, without CAD or modern manufacturing tools.

I still find this machine genius... I can't stop thinking about it. The stepped drum, invented by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz around 1673, stayed in use for nearly 300 years. A single rotating cylinder with staggered tooth lengths solved the entire problem of variable counting. I was looking for a good animation of the interior mechanism to explain it...this one shows really well how the stepped drum converts the set digit into rotation through its gear-and-drum setup.
