What a HORRIBLE forecast by meteorologists – especially myself. Not only were we spectacularly wrong – we communicated poorly. It became apparent last night that some of our initial expectations would prove fallacious. I'd like to address what went wrong with our forecast:

An old snippet from my former life as a TV weatherman — in June 2023, a similar outbreak of Canadian wildfires brought a shroud of smoke to much of the northeastern U.S. Here was a 90-second on-air forecast I did during the morning show explaining the climate link:

A reminder to residents of the Deep South — this is what tornadoes today may look like. You see it? Me neither. But it’s barely four football fields away. That’s what happens when you have waterlogged storms, rain-wrapped circulations and a grungy airmass. Same thing today.

Ah yes — the May 30, 2025 Tall Timbers, Maryland tornado that NWS Sterling refused to confirm. (And yes, I said refused... there were emails, a phone call, etc.) Despite damage reports, video confirmation and a lengthy editorial, the tornado appears in no official database.

AccuWeather is doubling down, arguing the non-tropical nor’easter should have been named. It seems that meteorologists SHOULD understand why it wasn’t. As I say in my video, “I’m MyRadar senior meteorologist Matthew Cappucci. We’ll never BS you, because we’re better than that.”

“We have no idea” was a line I used a couple times when doing TV weather. It used to freak producers out. But my goal is to exude competence — not confidence. As Andrew shows in his tweet, the most competent thing to do sometimes is explain lack of confidence in a solution.
