The first time I did brain surgery alone from start to finish during my training shouldn’t have happened. A woman was crashing from a massive brain bleed, and the attending on call never answered my 14 calls or came in. With her life at risk, I chose to operate alone rather than keep waiting. What would you have done? The patient recovered well. Before starting, I called a mentor I trusted, explained the situation, and got his blessing to proceed, so I broke no rules. Still, performing the entire operation without an attending at least showing up in the OR was completely new at my program and at my level of training. I have many more stories from my 25 years in neurosurgery. #BrainSurgery #Neurosurgeon #Neurosurgery
