It should have happened in Game 4 of the 1980 NLCS, still the wildest baseball game I've ever seen. Pete Rose never tagged from third on this play, and could have been a fourth out. If it happened, the Astros, and not the Phillies, would have been in the 1980 World Series. This game also featured a 23-minute argument in which both teams protested, a corded landline was brought to the front row seats of the NL Commissioner, and he was smoking a cigar inside the Astrodome. 1980 man ... what a year.

I mean, Toronto Blue Jays fans are annoyed now, but had any runs scored after this play today, which was ruled an error, they would have been really mad when this most likely gets changed to a hit, because this really isn't an error either. Third baseman is on the run, and throwing awkwardly on the run. If he properly sets he never gets Lopez, so you shouldn't penalize the fielder for doing everything he can to try to make the play. Now, no runs ended up scoring, but I suspect this will get appealed and changed, because this looks well above ordinary effort.

And this is how the streak ends with Jacob Wilson as the pick … this is correctly scored a fielder’s choice and not a hit because the runner from first was forced out at second. A BRUTAL way for a 50-game streak to end. He was so close to $5.6 million.

🚨WEIRD PLAY ALERT🚨 First, weird doesn’t do this justice. This is from Wednesday night’s game between AAA Albuquerque Isotopes at Reno Reno Aces … with one out B9, ABQ leads 4-3, but Reno has bases loaded. Connor Kaiser hits a gapper for a double and seemingly the win … BUT … R3 (Aramis Garcia) scores to make it 4-4 R2: (Christian Pache) runs into Ildemaro Vargas who ran on the field with a cell phone to record the celebration and accidentally knocked Pache over, which is unintentional interference. R1: (Andy Weber) stopped before third, and Kaiser rounded second and started to head to the celebration… BUT… Pache was called out (2-unassisted) so it was 4-4 … BUT … Topes CF Sam Hilliard thought the game was over on the hit so he flipped the ball over the fence to a kid … BUT … Since it was only 4-4, and coach/player interference is not a dead ball, flipping the ball into the stands is an error on Hilliard, and the penalty is the base you are going to at the time of the throw, plus another, meaning Weber, who stopped short of third, was awarded third, and then home to win the game. Final score … 5-4 Reno. Holy crap. Now, they will get the scoring fixed tomorrow (let’s face it this is a new one) but they will remove on of the RBIs from Kaiser, and add an error to Hilliard. The first runner is unearned because he reached on an error, and since Pache’s INT should have been the third out, Weber is also unearned. Absolutely the dumbest, silliest, best baseball ending to a game in a long, long time. Jomboy and Close Call Sports & Umpire Ejection Fantasy League will have a field day. Here is the clip with the ABQ radio call over it because it conveys the craziness way better than the Reno call.

Lots of folks wondering why the two plays to Oneil Cruz in the Pittsburgh Pirates at New York Mets game were recorded as hits. Here is the first one, and you can see he misjudges this line drive, and he comes in and then it sails over his head. MIsjudgement is NOT an error, so this correctly went down as a triple. Is it a ball that he needs to catch? Yes. Is it an error? No. An error is a physical misplay, and there is not a physicial misplay here. #LetsGoBucs #LGM

So this is the Juan Soto ball that I’ve had about 20 people message me about. This looks really routine and it’s right at Muncy. What am I missing? It’s hit 99.4 MPH but it’s right at Muncy and he fumbled it and still almost got Soto. This looks like a clear error to me.

SO YOU WANT TO BE AN OFFICIAL SCORER? Here is an unreal occurance in today's Miami Marlins Chicago Cubs game. Jesus Sanchez is internationally walked, but he never goes to first base before leaving for Christian Pache. The Cubs appealed the play and Pache was ruled out 13. Rule 9.07(b)(7) says if a batter refuses to take first on a walk, the putout is 2U. The issue is this isn't refusal ... he just didn't touch. So, unless MLB figures something different, this will be Pache out 13 on appeal while standing on first base for Sanchez not touching first. For now, Sanchez is credited with a walk, and Julian Merryweather with issuing an intentional walk, but is it a walk if you never touch first? I can tell you I don't think the Marlins or Cubs had ever see this, and I'm not sure MLB or Elias Sports Bureau has either. I sure haven't. You would think touching first on a walk wouldn't be that difficult. You really can see something you've never seen before in this game.

What a wild play with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers. From a scoring prospective this is not a hit since there was a force out recorded. This goes down as a ground into double play for Muncy (and maybe the longest GIDP in history) as both outs were force outs. It goes 862 with the catcher recording both putouts. #LetsGoDodgers #ThisIsMyCrew

Here is the play in question by Ryan, and as much as this is obvious that the catcher didn't secure this ... the rule in place for scorers is if a thorw BOUNCES, it is a throwing error. I do not like applying this in this type of instance on a throw from the outfield, but right now that's how the rule reads. Only the committee can change it on appeal, and they would have to do that against the writter rule (to the consternation of those in charge I'm certain). But letter of the law ... the throwing error is correct.

So here is the video of Baltimore Orioles Jackson Holliday's at bat in the sixth inning that was ruled an throwing error on 3B Logan Davidson. Now, not sure why folks are threatening me to change this (I don't change these things, I just report on them), but while Holliday is hustling down the line, the scorer sees this as ordinary effort for the third baseman, and if he doesn't bounce the throw Soderstrom keeps his foot on the bag and Holliday is out. I see this as an appeal for Holliday, but I'd be a little surprised if it changes because Davidson clearly sets himself, he isn't throwing on the run or anything. #Birdland #Athletics

🚨WEIRD PLAY ALERT🚨 Another catcher's interference in the Red Sox at Philadelphia Phillies game. This is different than last night and we have seen this before. This is BOTH catcher's interference and a balk for impeding Marsh's freedom of choice to hit a pitch, and for the catcher stepping across home plate before the pitch. Since the pitcher is throwing a pitch (on the rubber), this is BOTH CI and a balk. This is NOT an RBI, so MLB and Philadelphia will fix that, but the two runners moved up on the balk, and Marsh goes to first on catcher's interference (and this is an E2). Currently there is an RBI credited to Marsh which needs removed, and there is no balk credited to the Boston pitcher Fitts, so that needs added. We have seen this play several times, both in the SEC Tournament and in a Marlins game a year ago, and that post is here:

So here is the YES Network broadcast with Michael Kay, and this really isn’t a great look for Michael. You cannot talk in the sixth inning about how this should have been a hit and be surprised that an error was posted, and then get mad when this was correctly fixed between the seventh and eighth. Michael talked about how once the Tampa Bay Rays got a cleaner hit this would get changed because it should have been scored a hit all along. Good on the scorer for swallowing his pride and making sure he got this right. It’s easy to make a mistake (we all make them) but it would have been really easy to wait for a hit and THEN change it. I normally never mention the scorer but since they showed and named him on the broadcast, good on Bill for realizing that this needed changed and doing it BEFORE another hit. Also New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said postgame that he knew it was a hit and was surprised at the E3 ruling, which makes Kay’s ranting here look a little sillier. #RepBX #RaysUp

🚨WEIRD PLAY ALERT🚨 This is from tonight's Atlanta Braves at Miami Marlins game. This was originally scored a triple and an error, and almost immediately changed to an error on the right fielder and a throwing error on the center fielder. The original error on the rright fielder was for colliding with the center fielder as it looked like he had the ball. However, this was changed back to a triple and an error, as you have both fielders on a dead sprint back into right center. While yes, it might be a catch, the catch itself, and the play, is well above ordinary effort. The collision error isn't for this type of play, but a play where a fielder is situated where he can field the ball with ordinary effort and gets run into, with the ball getting knocked out, so this was changed after a review after the game but before stats were posted.

🚨CHANGE 150🚨 8/9 New York Mets at Milwaukee Brewers B7 Isaac Collins now reaches on an error by third baseman Ronny Mauricio, instead of on a single. As a result, Collins no longer is credited with a run batted in, and the final three runs scored in the inning are now unearned for pitchers Ryne Stanek (one run) and Ryan Helsley (two runs) Change 3 for MIL #LGM #ThisIsMyCrew

Huge thanks to Tom McCarthy for the shoutout last night on Philadelphia Phillies broadcast! This account will help explain why scoring decisions change and provide a better understanding of the complex art of baseball scoring. True story: Tom was one of the first people in baseball to follow the fledgling account back in 2022, when I had under 100 followers.

🚨CHANGE 7🚨 4/6 Baltimore Orioles at Kansas City Royals B1 Bobby Witt reaches on a three-base error by center fielder Jorge Mateo, instead of a triple. As a result, all 3 runs in the inning are now unearned to Cade Povich. Change 3 for KC #Birdland #FountainsUp
