🚨WEIRD PAY ALERT🚨 We have ABANDONMENT!!! Also, there is an irony this happened in Philadelphia and it was a Cincinnati Reds prospect that did it! This is from the 4th inning of today's Future's Game. Alfredo Duno of the Chattanooga Lookouts grounds a ball to third, and the throw from Caleb Bonemer up the line, and caught by first baseman Ralphy Velazquez. Velazquez has the ball and is straddling the baseline, so there is no where for Duno to go, so he basically says "screw it" and leaves the basepath and heads to the dugout. You can't see it here, but the first base umpire made the two-handed sweeping gesture for out of the baseline, but since the player isn't so much avoiding the tag as he is just heading to the dugout without completing the play, this is abandonment. You score it just the same as if the out was completed in regular fashion, so this is a 5-3 groundout. #MLBFuturesGame #RingTheBell #ATOBTTR

I’ve had a ton of questions regarding today’s first inning in Kansas City regarding the Philadelphia Phillies at Kansas City Royals, and why all six runs were earned despite an error. The error by Turner is a throwing error, and while a good throw would have ended the inning, this is NOT an assumed out error because of the out at second base (this is where you don’t assume a double play). So, even without this error, all six runs would have scored, so the six earned runs against Christopher Sánchez is correct. EDIT: adding this, but again, the error here is only for the extra base advancement, not for being safe at first, as the batter officially was safe on a fielder’s choice. The only way you could have an error on this is if the throw was a good one and on target, and the first baseman missed or dropped it. OK, I have a definitive word on the CJ Abrams play from today's Pittsburgh Pirates at Washington Nationals game after talking with Elias Sports Bureau on this. This play will stay as a sacrifice fly. The originial ruling of NOT a sacrifice fly was for the exact same reason that I thought, which is that the infielder is not running into the outfield, which is year's past would have been correct As it was explained to me, in past years, an infielder had to be running almost in a straight line towards the outfield wall to be considered "running in the outfield". Here, since he is running, and he ends up further away from home (157 feet) than when he started (145 feet), this is going to count as a sacrifice fly. That definition is changing, in part from this play to help bring greater consistency, and to take some of the guesswork out of it (the argument that he is running into the outfield as opposed to more parallel). Now, folks all the time ask "why doesn't MLB publish the OS Manual" and I always say because it is a living document that can have the wording change, and the wording for this play will be modified to something like "more towards the outfield wall than towards home plate" to eliminate any confusion. The big key to this play is that he was running on a full sprint. Also, and this is helpful for me, but for all fly ball outs that score a run, Elias Saba reviews to ensure consistency. So, yes, it's a sacrifice fly, and now that I have that info from Elias themselves, that sort of settles this one. Sounds like the guidelines for this definition will be changing, either this season, or certainly for next season.

Triolo doesn't make an attempt at the runner going to second, so it cannot be a fielder's choice, and the struggle to get the ball out of his glove isn't an error unless there is a complete loss of contact/bobble with air, and I don't see that either, and Happ then beat out the play at first. I don't see where the error is because Happ is on the base before the ball gets to first. There is an error for the advancements after the bad throw, but I have a single and not an assumed out here.

So, even though McCarthy would have only had a triple, the slip doesn't go as an error, so it's an insid-the-park home run. Also, had it been a triple and an error, it would have still been an earned run as Hunter Goodman's fly out to the warning track would have scored the runner from third. #LetsGoBucs #Rockies

🚨CYCLE SCORING ALERT🚨 Tons of folks sent this one in from the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets game, with Bryce Harper completing the cycle with this fifth inning triple. I believe this was scored correctly as a triple. This falls under Rule 9.06; Determining the Value of Base Hits. The key is Harper never slowed down at all and was going for third the whole time. One of the things the scorer has to determine is whether or not Harper went to third on the throw or not. He obviously was going for third regardless, and the fact that he would have been out is inconsequential here. The OS Manual states this: “Had the bases been empty, would the batter-runner have attempted to advance the extra base? If not, the value of the base hit should not include the additional base.” The answer on this one is yes, Harper would have ATTEMPTED to advance. Doesn’t say if he would have been safe. Since he would have attempted this regardless of the throw home, he was, IMHO, correctly credited with a triple.

🚨CONFIRMED NON-CHANGE🚨 I can now confirm that Cincinnati Reds JJ Bleday's appeal for a hit against Milwaukee Brewers was denied, and the original ruling of a missed catch error was upheld, meaning the four runs in the inning scored against Jacob Misiorowski will stay unearned. As a reminder, the play made by the third baseman was well above ordinary effort, but since he had a good, on-target throw to first, the only issue is whether the first baseman, Jake Bauers, dropped the ball/missed the catch. While it is extremely close, the ruling is that Bauers could have caught the ball a millisecond before Bleday hit the base (which you can see in the screen capture). Now, Bauers also played this poorly in that he is on the back side of the bag, and he is not stretched out properly to receive the ball, but that isn't really used in this. The question is: did he drop the ball or miss the catch in a way that, had he caught it, the batter would have been out, and the answer to that, for the committee, is yes, he would have been out. Since the ball hit the glove before the foot hit the base (as many pointed out), it's an error. Ok, I'm not gonna lie, it's plays like this that make me question having my DMs open. It's obvious the folks asking me about this play in the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers game are either daily fantasy players, or gamblers, so I'll use this as an educational post. This is NEVER an error. This play where Brice Matthews is on the dead run, leaping to save a home run, and nearly making a SportsCenter Top-10 (this would have been No. 1) play is NOT an error. This is way, way, way beyond ordinary effort. An error is a dropping of the ball or a misplay in which the average fielder is expected to make the physical catch at that position, using ordinary effort. There is nothing ordinary about this. This is ALWAYS a hit. ALWAYS.

🚨ODD SCORING ALERT🚨 ... and AGAIN, it's from the Colorado Rockies, who are keeping me busy. Against the Red Sox today, the Rockies did the very difficult thing of grounding into a force out that was also a sacrifice fly. It's true. With one out and the bases loaded, Cole Carrigg lined a ball to right that was dropped by Wilyer Abreu. Tyler Freeman was tagging up, and he scored, but Hunter Goodman was hung up and thrown out on a force play at second. However, this still goes as a sacrifice fly for Carrigg. That's because of Rule 9.08(d) Comment: "The Official Scorer shall score a sacrifice fly in accordance with Rule 9.08(d)(2) even though another runner is forced out by reason of the batter becoming a runner." These don't happen very often, and there is no error charged here, because the force out was obtained but this is a ground out for the pitcher, yet it's a sacrifice fly. #DirtyWater #Rockies

🚨ODD SCORING ALERT🚨 ... and AGAIN, it's from the Colorado Rockies, who are keeping me busy. Against the Red Sox today, the Rockies did the very difficult thing of grounding into a force out that was also a sacrifice fly. It's true. With one out and the bases loaded, Cole Carrigg lined a ball to right that was dropped by Wilyer Abreu. Tyler Freeman was tagging up, and he scored, but Hunter Goodman was hung up and thrown out on a force play at second. However, this still goes as a sacrifice fly for Carrigg. That's because of Rule 9.08(d) Comment: "The Official Scorer shall score a sacrifice fly in accordance with Rule 9.08(d)(2) even though another runner is forced out by reason of the batter becoming a runner." These don't happen very often, and there is no error charged here, because the force out was obtained but this is a ground out for the pitcher, yet it's a sacrifice fly. #DirtyWater #Rockies

How about this ... the PCA play last night in the Chicago Cubs game that Cubs fans are losing their minds over and fans are like "show me another time it happened". It happened in 2007 ... and THE CUBS WERE THE VICTIMS!!!! Gotta love sports videos on 2007 TVs without high definition.

Here is the full Ernie Clement/Gunnar Henderson play from today’s Baltimore Orioles at Toronto Blue Jays game, and Dan Shulman really explains this well. I don’t see a tag attempt, and if you wanted to call what Henderson does a tag attempt, Clement stays within three feet of where he was at the time of the “attempt”, so I feel they got this right.

This is from Wednesday night’s game between AAA Albuquerque Isotopes at Reno Reno Aces … with one out B9, ABQ leads 4-3, but Reno has bases loaded. Connor Kaiser hits a gapper for a double and seemingly the win … BUT … R3 (Aramis Garcia) scores to make it 4-4 R2: (Christian Pache) runs into Ildemaro Vargas who ran on the field with a cell phone to record the celebration and accidentally knocked Pache over, which is unintentional interference. R1: (Andy Weber) stopped before third, and Kaiser rounded second and started to head to the celebration… BUT… Pache was called out (2-unassisted) so it was 4-4 … BUT … Topes CF Sam Hilliard thought the game was over on the hit so he flipped the ball over the fence to a kid … BUT … Since it was only 4-4, and coach/player interference is not a dead ball, flipping the ball into the stands is an error on Hilliard, and the penalty is the base you are going to at the time of the throw, plus another, meaning Weber, who stopped short of third, was awarded third, and then home to win the game. Final score … 5-4 Reno. Holy crap. Now, they will get the scoring fixed tomorrow (let’s face it this is a new one) but they will remove on of the RBIs from Kaiser, and add an error to Hilliard. The first runner is unearned because he reached on an error, and since Pache’s INT should have been the third out, Weber is also unearned. Absolutely the dumbest, silliest, best baseball ending to a game in a long, long time. Jomboy and Close Call Sports & Umpire Ejection Fantasy League will have a field day. Here is the clip with the ABQ radio call over it because it conveys the craziness way better than the Reno call.

So this is the Juan Soto ball that I’ve had about 20 people message me about. This looks really routine and it’s right at Muncy. What am I missing? It’s hit 99.4 MPH but it’s right at Muncy and he fumbled it and still almost got Soto. This looks like a clear error to me.

SO YOU WANT TO BE AN OFFICIAL SCORER? Here is an unreal occurance in today's Miami Marlins Chicago Cubs game. Jesus Sanchez is internationally walked, but he never goes to first base before leaving for Christian Pache. The Cubs appealed the play and Pache was ruled out 13. Rule 9.07(b)(7) says if a batter refuses to take first on a walk, the putout is 2U. The issue is this isn't refusal ... he just didn't touch. So, unless MLB figures something different, this will be Pache out 13 on appeal while standing on first base for Sanchez not touching first. For now, Sanchez is credited with a walk, and Julian Merryweather with issuing an intentional walk, but is it a walk if you never touch first? I can tell you I don't think the Marlins or Cubs had ever see this, and I'm not sure MLB or Elias Sports Bureau has either. I sure haven't. You would think touching first on a walk wouldn't be that difficult. You really can see something you've never seen before in this game.

I got a record number of DMs and mentions from this controversial scoring decision from the 10th inning of last night’s Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers game. Mookie Betts smokes this ball which nicks off the second baseman’s glove to score a run. This was ruled an error with no RBI. Mookie is certainly owed one from earlier this year and he should appeal this. This is 103.9 off the bat with the infield in. The question is did Julien miscatch this ball or did he not have enough time to react? Based on where he is, where the ball started and ended relative to the pitcher, I certainly would have scored this a hit without much thought. This isn’t dropped, Julien cannot react quickly enough to it. This got so many people’s attention because Betts ended the day 0-for-5 with no runs batted in. You never know with the committee, but this should get changed. This is a hit in my mind. #Rockies #Dodgers

I mean, Toronto Blue Jays fans are annoyed now, but had any runs scored after this play today, which was ruled an error, they would have been really mad when this most likely gets changed to a hit, because this really isn't an error either. Third baseman is on the run, and throwing awkwardly on the run. If he properly sets he never gets Lopez, so you shouldn't penalize the fielder for doing everything he can to try to make the play. Now, no runs ended up scoring, but I suspect this will get appealed and changed, because this looks well above ordinary effort.
