Heads up‼️ Hottest Ever?! It’s genuinely possible. No exaggeration to say that the severity of the #heatwave that the Eastern US is about to experience will be cruel and grueling for days! 100s of record highs, some neck and neck with all-time records, in the East Coast cities! And peak heat index numbers near 115. Lasting right into the weekend.

We have an unusually High #Tornado Threat from #Hurricane Isaias This movie uses real data, to help educate on why this storm poses an enhanced risk. Notice the yellow vs blue arrows. Yellow are the winds just below the clouds, it’s the low level wind flow (jet) around and feeding into the storm. Blue are the mid-level winds associated with the jet stream. You’ll notice that as Isaias approaches the Gulf Coast the blue arrows increase and the low-level vs mid-levels winds vigorously cross (X) each other. That’s the jet stream (blue arrows) being infused into the tropical system. That will create more cross winds/ shear, weaken #Isaias, but embolden spin in the outer bands. This injection of energy will power strong #tornadoes on the storm’s east side at landfall in the #Florida Panhandle and beyond into the Southeast. Not all storms have this, but it’s more common in fall as the mid-latitude jet stream increases. And it gives the transitioning tropical storm system a different character. It causes the wind field at the core to expand, making the storm larger, empowering the outer bands with more wind, at the expense of the core winds which weaken. (Although all set ups are different, Milton and Sandy come to mind) *This animation does use real wind data, but the tornadoes are added to illustrate where the greatest risk is. They are not meant to forecast exactly where the tornadoes will be.

🌀 Tropical Timeline 🌀 Conditions are ripe now, storm should form fast. Next 2-3 Days: Intensification, perhaps rapid. A #hurricane, maybe even strong (major) is possible under very low shear and record hot water temps. The Storm will peak mid-late week in central #Gulf . BUT: Then #Isaias runs into a wall of wicked wind shear 💨 and should weaken as it heads towards landfall on the Northern Gulf Coast. Still important impacts are likely. It will make a fast transition to a post tropical cyclone as it interacts with the jet stream. Due to this transition it may preserve a significant amount of its wind, spread over a larger - less concentrated area - and pose a bigger than normal #Tornado 🌪️ threat. Biggest impacts #NewOrleans #Louisiana to #Biloxi #Mobile #Florida panhandle #Pensacola and #PanamaCityFL later Friday into Saturday.

Wait! What?!? This is something you don’t see every (any) day!! Tropical Storm #Rachel hits the Desert Southwest with flooding, then the Tropical Plume dumps heavy snow on Montana!! Dude, that’s wacky El Niño weather! #elnino #snow #California #montana #flooding

Straight out of a meteorology textbook. Super Storm Slams #Iceland with wind gusts over 100 mph and a pressure of 930mb - equivalent to a Major #Hurricane! It has a classic comma head. The #storm is hitting Northern #Europe now

What the heck is a “Sting Jet”?? It’s a narrow strip of violent winds, like a jet streak, that can be pulled downward from up above. As the jet streak descends the air dries out, becoming heavier, and speeding up. This Sting Jet got sucked into #Isaias and produced 120 mph gusts near #pensacola, far stronger than the #hurricane core itself. This is an idealized, simplified animation, and the jet is a consequence of the interaction between the storm and the winds aloft.

Hurricane-like Eye in Major Nor’easter forces cool air south into #Florida this weekend! Strongest gusts remain offshore, but power outages and coastal flooding are a concern. #noreaster

No, your eyes are not deceiving you! Next week's cold blast is going to be “near” historic in #Florida for early November. The models are very aggressive and if they are right we may tie or break records set ~100 years ago. These are wind chills for Tuesday morning BUT it is not out of the question that North FL will see actual low temps near freezing next Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Fire up the fireplaces! You don't have one? You have a week to get it :)

Just watch how gargantuan this storm is. I still can’t get over it. In terms of girth, it’s def in the top 5 that I recall. This will impact 2/3rds of the nation and half of the country in a big way. Longevity too, with us Friday-Monday! And the brutal cold that follows. 🥶 Disruption deep into next week! #Snow #ice #storm

100 MPH Hurricane Killing Peak Wind Shear forecast in the #Caribbean . Unreal for summer, but this is no ordinary summer. The strongest El Niño on record is flexing its muscle 💪 and overpowering the Atlantic. Anything that tries to develop would be torn to pieces. If this continues, it would be one of the quietest Atlantic hurricane seasons on record. #hurricane #elnino

When I look at this jet stream the word insane comes to mind. It's even more astonishing when you consider it's mid June! This configuration, likely enhanced by climate heating, is fueling a record heat dome so extreme that even experts are astonished!

Europe is melting! The size, intensity, and longevity of this #heatwave is enormous. Peak temperatures will reach 45°C / 100-115°F this week in #France . You are looking at temperature anomalies in the cloud layer over the next 2 weeks, which peak at +20°C. #Europe is Earth’s fastest warming continent, and European heat extremes are increasing faster than models project they should, likely due to changes in steering flow. In a rapid attribution study by Climameter it is estimated that #climatechange has made this June heatwave up to 4°C hotter (7°F) than it would have otherwise been without warming.

What if #Milton went 25 mi north? Disaster for #tampabay! Milton’s eye went south of the bay and winds on north side forced 2-5 ft of water out. Reverse surge. But landfall 25 miles north would have changed fate as 15 ft of surge would have funneled into the narrowing bay. WFLA NEWS

#Hurricaneerin is hungry. It will feast on hot water up to 88 degrees. After using this heat to power its engine, it will dissipate said heat. Leaving a cool ocean wake in its path, ~10 degrees lower than it found it. The water cools not just due to heat absorption, but also overturning /upwelling, wind and rain.

Extreme Atmospheric Dance 🕺 Watch how a record shattering September Heat Dome across the US East, helps spawn a strong upper level low over #Florida this weekend trapped south of the dome. Under the heat dome hundreds of heat records will be broken, with heat index numbers up to 110. In Florida the upper level low may help cause some severe thunderstorms with hail this weekend. This is NOT a tropical system. #heatwave

Watch #Melissa meander on a path right through some of the hottest (deep) waters on the planet, powering one of the strongest hurricanes ever, then leave a cool wake behind as it turns hot water into power to charge its rain and wind. The #caribbean in October is notorious for monster hurricanes and Melissa literally moved over the hottest waters not just in the Atlantic but also in the entire Caribbean. How it ended up there is part luck, part climatology, and - in a local sense - partly that storms without steering can sometimes be tugged towards areas with the greatest heat/ instability. #hurricane #fyp #jamaica

Can’t stop. Won’t stop. The models keep insisting on historic cold as the huge Canadian Polar Vortex pays the Eastern US a visit! A pool of record breaking cold 850mb temps and record breaking 500 mb heights (for early-mid Nov) will do a “fly by” Monday-Wednesday as actual surface low temps fall below freezing in the SE US, 30s as far south as Central-North FL!! 40s south of I-4, 50s deep into South FL. #Florida #ColdFront #Freeze #Snow #Winter

This may be hard to believe given how cold it’s been, but the coldest air of the season is still to come in the Northeast this weekend. Wind chills to -30°F or lower Sunday morning. -20 in NYC!! Holy moly. #cold #winter #ArcticBlast #snow

The Arctic flood gates are opening up, as a strong & warm (relatively) block grows over Greenland. That warmth will shove the frigid Polar Vortex south, with multiple cold plunges in the batters box for the next 10-15 days in the Midwest, Great Lakes, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. The chilly air will visit the Deep South and #Florida periodically too.

Some rare and remarkable processes are taking place this week, that we are not likely to observe for a long time! These 2 Atlantic hurricanes are closer than any since at least the 1960s. They are now connected - in each other’s orbit, pivoting. Stop 1. Notice the calm area at the pivot point between the two storms caused by sinking air. Stop 2. #Humberto dissipates and #Imelda cannibalizes its moisture and energy, passes over #Bermuda, grows, then heads out to sea. (2 hurricanes can NOT merge both as hurricanes. One must die or transition extra tropical first) Stop 3. Imelda meets a frontal boundary where it scales the front and is accelerated NE.
