Crews on the east side of the #hogbackfire are setting up a progressive hose lay to get water up the steep slope to near the top of the ridge. They’ll also be using saws to cut out vegetation- taking fuel away from the fire. Strong gusty winds are expected until midnight tonight.

FINAL UPDATE: The cause of the fire was an unattended space heater on the wood deck of the second floor end unit. The video from a resident (who lives several doors down from the fire unit) shows fire conditions just as the first engine- West Metro Engine 1- arrived on scene. The fire got up into the attic, and burned through the roof in one area. American Red Cross of Colorado and Wyoming is assisting the displaced residents with finding shelter.

UPDATE: The fire is out, investigators are on scene. The fire started on the outside of a duplex, burned through the wood deck, and climbed up into the attic on one side of the structure. Then it traveled down a wood fence, burning the back side of another structure, through the yard, to a vehicle. A few minutes into the fire, firefighters heard two explosions from propane tanks which helped fuel the fire. Crews were able to contain the fire to one side of the duplex. There is limited water damage on the other side. There were no injuries. Crews rescued a lizard, but a cat is still missing. The people inside the duplex were alerted by a neighbor who saw the fire, and ran to knock on the door to get them out. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

If you were wondering why westbound C-470 was closed last night... here's what happened. Around 9:20 p.m., a semi hauling potatoes caught fire between Highway 285 and Morrison Rd. Several passing drivers spotted the flames and smoke and called 911. The driver made it out safely and was not injured. The burning truck also sparked a small grass fire along the shoulder, but firefighters quickly contained it before it could spread. Thanks to Foothills Fire Protection District for responding with their water tender and crew to assist. Westbound C-470 was closed for about two hours while crews extinguished the truck fire, contained the grass fire, and cleared the scene.

Water tenders shuttle thousands of gallons at a time from the nearest available water source to the fire, where engines and crews put it to work. It’s dry out there. And it doesn’t take much. Take a look at this fire from last night along 6th Avenue. From the air, it looks bigger that it really was- about one acre. But one acre with potential. The potential to move toward fence lines and homes. 🔥 Crews kept it small with quick work. Unlike 80 - 90% of all wildfires, this wasn't human-caused. It started when a malfunctioning electrical box on a lighted highway sign dropped sparks into the dry grass below. That’s it. That’s all it takes right now. Stay aware. Stay ready. The #HogbackFire is estimated at 10 acres & growing- pushed by extremely strong winds. It’s moving from near Alameda & C470 to the southeast. This video is from the west side of the hogback, on the side the fire originated. Wind pushed it upslope and over the top of the ridge.

Our Brush 9 crew has been assigned to the #PalisadesFire in the Los Angeles area. This morning, they drove along the Pacific Coast Highway to join up with their task force, and passed through some of the hardest hit areas of the fire. Structures gone, in some places, only foundations or chimneys marking where they once stood. There are 5,123 personnel assigned to the Palisades Fire, which, at last report- was at 14% containment and 23,713 acres. Firefighters are expecting the next couple of days to be tough- there's a Red Flag Warning out for the area until 6pm on Wednesday. The West Metro crew and other crews will be working to protect several thousand threatened structures. Latest information on the Palisades Fire: #westmetrofirerescue #lafires

Two upper floor units had fire damage, there is water damage to two units below, and also smoke damage throughout the building. Approximately 30 people will be displaced. Crews rescued three cats, and one parrot. Unfortunately, one of the cats did not make it. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
