Anti-mining protests that have roiled Panama for the last... two weeks turned deadly on Tuesday when a man allegedly shot and killed two demonstrators, according to police. A chilling video posted by bystanders on X, formerly known as Twitter, showed a disheveled elderly man apparently frustrated with the logjam trying to force the protestors to remove a barrier blocking the Pan American highway about 50 miles south of the capital, before pulling out a pistol and opening fire. Panama’s National Police later said they arrested the suspected gunman at the scene of the shooting. Other footage showed people standing around bodies in the road in the Chame sector west of Panama City as well as the gunman being cuffed and led to a squad car. Police later shared a photo of the suspect handcuffed to a pipe as he was identified as Kenneth Darlington, 77, a lawyer and professor who holds dual citizenship in the US and Panama, according to Newsroom Panama and Agence France-Presse. One of the shot protesters died at the scene while the second was pronounced dead at a local hospital, AFP said. The unusual scene of violence is the latest flashpoint in some of the largest protests to hit the Central American nation since Panamanians flooded the streets en masse to demonstrate against the dictatorship of Manuel Noriega in the 1980s. For weeks, tens of thousands of protestors have vented their fury at a controversial mining contract given to Minera Panama, the local subsidiary of a Canadian mining company, to extract copper, a key component in electric car batteries. The contract allows Canada’s First Quantum Minerals to restart an open-pit copper mine surrounded by rain forest for the next 20 years, with the possibility of extending for another 20 years. Police in Yeji, in the Pru East District of... the Bono East Region, have arrested a man identified as Hayford Boateng, popularly known as GH Kobby, in connection with the death of his girlfriend in Seker, a village near Yeji. The deceased reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to her left arm. Two of the suspect’s friends, who were also in a vehicle fleeing the scene, have been arrested. According to reports, the deceased was rushed to St. Martin’s Hospital in Yeji, where she later died from the gunshot injury. The boyfriend reportedly claims the shooting was accidental. One of the alleged suspects died whilst the other one sustained some injuries. The incident occurred in Verena on Wednesday, 24 December 2024. The incident is believed to be linked to stocktheft incident, where 26 cattle, six goats, and a donkey were reportedly stolen from a certain farm in Verena. Thereafter, the suspects are believed to have fled the scene in two bakkies with trailers when their vehicles got stuck in the mud, leading to their capture and attack by the mob. BREAKING: Authorities have identified the man shot and killed... on I-15 last Friday, March 27 as Sayed Mousavi, a 29-year-old living in Sandy. Investigators say the incident unfolded around 4:56 p.m. along I-15 near 3500 South, when a Utah Highway Patrol trooper’s vehicle was struck by a car driven by Mousavi, who was traveling northbound. After both vehicles came to a stop, the trooper approached and made contact. According to Utah Highway Patrol, Mousavi then brandished a knife, prompting the trooper to open fire. Mousavi was pronounced dead at the scene. The trooper was not injured. The investigation remains ongoing and is being handled by the Salt Lake County OICI Protocol Team 4, led by the West Jordan Police Department. No additional details have been released. Mousavi pleaded guilty in a case from November 2024, he was arrested in Sandy after authorities said he made threats to “kill Americans and kill the U.S.A.” Prosecutors also alleged he told police he planned to “buy guns and shoot up the Sandy Police Department.” In that case, Mousavi was charged with one count of making a threat of terrorism, three counts of failing to respond to an officer’s signal to stop, and a misdemeanor count of driving on a suspended license.show more

TORONTO, ONTARIO - A 16-year-old who shot at police... during a traffic stop in Toronto on Sun, Apr. 20 has died in hospital after being shot by police officers. The incident occurred in North York. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said a Toronto police officer stopped an Infiniti car over a Highway Traffic Act infraction in the area of Sheppard Avenue W. and Bathurst Street at around 11PM that night. "There was an exchange of gunfire during which two police officers discharged their firearms," the SIU said in the release. "The male was struck and was taken to hospital where he passed away. There were six people in the car when it was initially stopped for a missing front licence plate. Surveillance video obtained by CBC Toronto appears to capture the moment gunfire erupts. In it, the suspect vehicle appears to be boxed in between two police SUVs. It appears that one officer is on the road next to the driver's window before something happens that sends the officer scrambling to take cover in front of the car's hood. From that position, one of the officers reaches up and fires into the car at least three times while another officer, whose uniform is more visible, pulls out their gun and aims into the car.show more

The group, Palestine Action, said in a statement that the destruction of the portrait in Trinity College, Cambridge, was intended to call attention to “the bloodshed of the Palestinian people since the Balfour Declaration was issued,” particularly in light of the current conflict in Gaza. A spokeswoman for Trinity, whose alumni include King Charles III as well as Balfour himself, said in a statement on Friday that the college “regrets the damage caused to a portrait of Arthur James Balfour during public opening hours” and that it had notified the police.
