As a part-American, allow me explain the difference. I... have been to many sporting events all around the USA, and of course, many in the UK and in Europe (because Aston Villa are massive). For Americans, sport is about entertainment. Big scores, no draws. What happens on the pitch is almost secondary to the performance. Hence pop songs between every play, all kinds of mascot and cheerleader shenanigans, the Armed Forces shenanigans before kick off. This vid was taken at Purdue at half time when they were getting absolutely pumped by Notre Dame. Embarrassing defeat: doesn’t matter, the show must go on. For Brits, football is something more existential. The seemingly unprompted unison chants, the camaraderie, the explosion upon scoring a goal… nothing in US sports matches it. Not even close. The old grounds and history are part of the charm. I wouldn’t swap battered old Villa Park for any of the US sports arenas I’ve visited. That doesn’t mean both aren’t a splendid day out, and I love my IU, Colts and Cubs, but the American sports experience does not come close to the British football experience for sheer emotion and spontaneity - EXCEPT in finals, when the jeopardy and tension is on a par.show more

Soccer is booming in the United States and World... Cup viewership shows there is MASSIVE interest, but it will never be the priority and always play 5th fiddle to the Big 4 sports in America unless Americans fundamentally change their approach to youth sports. American Soccer is behind the rest of the world for 3 reasons: 1. Cultural Sporting DNA In the USA, Soccer competes in a crowded field of Football, Basketball, Baseball and Hockey instead of dominating like abroad. Europe and the rest of the world built soccer through community clubs, local pride and it being their default sport. They are born with a soccer ball on their feet. 2. Pay-to-Play Barrier In the USA most youth are priced out of playing because the cost to be on the team is too expensive. Currently there is a 14% decline in youth soccer participation between ages 6 to 12. Europe and the rest of world’s accessible club model keeps more kids in the game longer. 3. Less participation in the sport An all time high 16.8 million youth played outdoor soccer in the USA in 2025, but per capita the USA is far behind other European countries like Belgium which has a 3x higher rate of participation for its population size. For American soccer to catch up, it has to change its sporting culture focus to development instead of making money and lower the cost barrier for participation through state and government funded clubs over the next 20 years. Development needs to be the priority, not maximizing how much money can be made off the athlete and their parents. Instead of focusing on the old statement of “if our best athletes played”, focus on making the best athletes want to keep playing and the ones who do play the beautiful game better at it. Then and only then can we find our Erling Haaland, Lamine Yamal, Messi, Ronaldo or Jude Bellingham. They claim men are males if they play elite level sport but can be women if they *feel* like it at grass roots levels. Farewell to International Space Station! This is truly a... special place, special mission, and special team that makes it happen. It is a bittersweet departure today – I have a keen awareness that I may never be back here, and even if I was, it would be at a different time with a different crew. This chapter is over. Spaceflight has always been a life goal, and it has turned into a life-fulfilling endeavor – but not for the reasons I thought growing up. When I was young, I pictured the launch, the incredible ball of fire and the acceleration, the spacewalks (how could you not wonder what it’s like to be in that suit?), and I was fascinated by the shuttles, capsules, and stations. But as I complete this second mission living and working in space, what draws me to this job is the people. Experiences like this are amazing, but the relationships we build that make it possible are the “why.” Every day, this mission depends on people from all over the world, of different nationalities, races, religions, and cultures. It depends on government and commercial entities, it depends on all political parties, and it depends on commitment to an unchanged goal over many years and decades. It depends on people dedicated to being part of something bigger than themselves, whose names may never be known but who wake up every day to make the world a better place and to be part of something they will be proud to tell their grandkids about. History will look kindly upon them. Humans have always had a propensity to explore … across lands and oceans, up mountains, and into the sky. We as a species will never stop wondering what else is out there, and what it would be like to go.
