We’ve seen guys like Judge, Stanton, Wells and others... tinker with their stances to get into a better hitting position to attack strikes in the zone. When a guy like Volpe has struggled to hit consistently for his first 3 years, is constantly late on mid-velocity heaters in the middle of the zone and is constantly off-balance when he misses the off-speed stuff; you think to take a look at his pre-pitch habits especially what he’s doing with his hands and stride, and consider eliminating some of the unnecessary movements to simplify things and be ready to attack a pitch in the strike zone sooner. Volpe starts with his hands high above his head with some waggle to probably keep his hands moving and stay in rhythm, then as he strides he drops his hands into the slot while he loads, then wraps his hands behind him as he strides and keeps his weight back on his backside. That front foot needs to get down early as he gets his hands back to be ready to smoke something in the zone. Why hasn’t someone suggested dropping his hands pre-pitch in his stance to get them into the slot early, keep them back to prevent wrapping, and cut out one less moving part to get him better ready to attack pitches in the zone? He can even still have some waggle back there if he prefers to keep his hands moving. In theory if his hands are down and back already, all he needs to do is get his front foot down in time? Toots is a loving and affectionate 11 year old... male Shihtzu. Sadly his owner has had a stroke and can no longer care for him. It was a sad day for Jiu-Jitsu. 😔 Last... week at a tournament in Brazil, a black belt known as Kabuto suffered a very serious cervical spine injury while competing in the No-Gi Open Class. He went for a triangle against a much heavier opponent. His opponent stood up while Kabuto was upside down in the triangle and slammed him onto the mat, landing him on his neck. Kabuto was taken to the hospital and underwent a very long surgery. Unfortunately, his injury is extremely serious, and no one knows how much he will be able to recover and it may require a tremendous amount of support and resources. I’m making this post for two reasons. First, there is a fundraiser to help Kabuto and his family during his recovery. I’m leaving the link here below. If you are able to help, any support would mean a lot. 🙏 Second, I think this is an important reminder for all of us in the Jiu-Jitsu community to understand what is legal and illegal, but especially what can cause catastrophic injuries. Here’s a back angle of the same play. This... is a clean play IMO. I see some mild contact here, but no tackle “from behind” is performed which has been alluded to by some. Jakob is not a dirty player and has never proven to be. Kuithe plants with his left leg at the top of the route and you see a slight buckling inward of the left knee (valgus force which is typical in ACL tears.) This is normal contact with a TE/DB at the top of a route. Jakob disengages with his body after the initial contact. It appears to be a left knee injury. Possibly an ACL tear with some collateral damage based off the mechanism. Kuithe begins to hobble after the plant and eventually falls to the turf. Kuithe, in 2022 suffered an ACL injury and meniscus tear to his right knee. Data shows that once you’ve had an ACL Injury, there is a higher risk of injuring your opposite knee than your reconstructed knee. Furthermore, there is increasing data supporting the elevated risk of ACL injuries correlated to turf as well as style and type of cleats. My heart goes out to Kuithe.show more
