US "Amazon" variant of the British "Grand Slam" earthquake... bomb dropped by B-29s on reinforced U-boat pens in Germany during post-war trials full clip: The Valentin submarine pens are a reinforced concrete facility on the Weser River at the Bremen suburb of Rekum, built to protect German U-boats during World War II. The factory was under construction from 1943 to March 1945 using forced labor, but was damaged by air-raids and unfinished by the end of the war. The Valentin factory was the largest fortified U-boat facility in Germany, and was second only to those built at Brest in France. After the war, the facility was used as a target for Project Ruby, a series of joint British and American tests to determine the viability of various munitions against reinforced concrete targets. It had been hit by British "Tallboy" and "Grand Slam" earthquake bombs during a raid on March 27th 1945 and one of the weapons tested in 1947 was "Amazon", the US variant of the 22,000 lb "Grand Slam" that weighed in at 25,000 lbs and was dropped by B-29 Superfortress bombers flying from RAF Marham in England. The historians claim that the Kailasa Temple in Ellora... was built in the 8th century, yet we have no written records explaining how this massive monolithic temple was carved into the giant hill, or how and where the estimated 400,000 tons of excavated basalt were removed and disposed of. Just for comparison, it would take approximately 890 fully loaded BelAZ 75710 truckloads (450-ton payload), the largest dump truck ever built, to remove all that rock. Only three BelAZ 75710 trucks have ever been built. Each weighs 360 tons empty, consumes about 1,300 liters of diesel per 100 km, and requires specially constructed haul roads to operate. The overall footprint of the temple is 3,770 m² (40,500 sq ft). Where did all the excavated rock go? Most people walking the streets of modern Jerusalem have... no idea what lies directly beneath their feet. In the City of David, archaeologists have uncovered the Pilgrimage Road, the actual stone-paved street used by hundreds of thousands of Jewish pilgrims to ascend to the Temple Mount during the Second Temple period. Running directly underneath it is one of the largest and best-preserved ancient drainage channels ever found in Jerusalem, a massive sewer system that carried rainwater and waste away from the Temple area. The engineering is astonishing. Massive stone slabs still in place, some weighing several tons. The channel is tall enough for a person to walk through. Artefacts recovered include coins, pottery, and personal items dropped by pilgrims nearly 2,000 years ago. This road and channel give us a direct, physical connection to the world of the Second Temple, the very streets where Jewish pilgrims walked during the time of the Mishnah and the events described in the Gospels. The castles of Europe are some of the most... amazing things we’ve inherited from history Between 75,000 and 100,000 castles were built in Western Europe during the medieval period, with around 1,700 in England and Wales alone, and roughly 14,000 in German-speaking areas... Most of them rose between the 9th and 15th centuries after the collapse of centralized Roman authority and the rise of fragmented feudal power. As attacking armies grew more sophisticated, so did the walls meant to stop them. The cost was staggering: from 1179 to 1188, King Henry II of England spent over £6,500 on Dover Castle alone — an enormous sum given that his entire annual revenue was around £10,000. That figure was more than three times what he spent on any other building project in his reign, and more than four times what went into grand royal residences like Windsor. And then there is Malbork... Built by the Teutonic Knights in what is now Poland, Malbork is the largest castle in the world measured by land area. It covers 52 acres and once housed approximately 3,000 knights. A medieval visitor reportedly noted it seemed "more a city enclosed by walls than a single castle." In 950, Provence was home to just 12 castles. By 1000, the number had risen to 30. By 1030, it was over 100. The pace was not driven by a single empire with a plan, but by thousands of individual decisions made by lords, bishops, and kings who each decided, in their own time and place, that stone was the only reliable answer to an uncertain world...
