I never thought I would become part of this... “salon racism trend,” that’s going around social media…nor did I ever WANT to ever become a part of this trend. Yesterday, my daughter and I attempted to go get our nails done. We walked into the nail salon, someone was being helped at the counter to be checked out, & someone was sitting on a chair by the door, or were just waiting on someone else to finish getting their nails done, (as though they’d already been assisted, but hadn’t had their service completed yet). My daughter simply asked how long the wait was for 2 full-sets and one pedicure…she was told it would be 15 minutes. We did this BEFORE we sat down. The woman in the chair IMMEDIATELY said, “I know you see me sitting here…how you gonna just walk in & jump right in front of me?” To which I responded, “you’ll be alright.” She then shot straight up, began to cause a scene, she stomped to the back of the salon…the whole time she was going on about how she wasn’t going to stay and wait to have her nails done. She was being rude and disrespectful, but I wasn’t even fully aware of what was occurring. You see…when a normal person goes to a salon & would like to receive services…you go up to the counter to see how long the wait is (like my daughter and I did when we entered). You don’t walk in & sit in one of the chairs, expecting for people to drop what they are doing to attend to your every need. If there is a line, you get up off your ass, & get in the line…otherwise it just appears that you are not a paying customer…waiting for a paid service, yourself, it appears that you are just sitting there, waiting on someone else to finish getting the mani-pedi that they have paid for. Then again, a “normal person” wouldn’t have completely lost their mind simply because we asked how long the wait was, before we sat down…because we asked in the way a normal person does. A normal person would have calmly stated, “Excuse me, but I have been waiting.” It was clear that she was there prior to us entering the salon, so it wouldn’t have been a problem at all. However, this individual chose to act like a wildebeest. She took off…straight to the back of the salon, in order to get her friend…whose nails weren’t even completely done, because she was now refusing to get her nails done here. All because we walked in and asked how long the wait was. That was it. I’ve seen stories of people being racist like this on social media, but I have never actually encountered this in real life, & I never expected to receive this type of treatment in real life…especially in small-town, USA…yet, here we are. A grown-ass black woman, stomping out of a nail salon, while exclaiming that we “make her ass itch,” (eww, girl) and then accused us of other things (in the presence of my infant grandson, no less). To which my daughter did respond, “nope, I wasn’t,” because after everything that she just did…after the huge scene that she just caused…why should we be expected to say absolutely nothing? If They Can Endure, So Can We. 🌱 There... are days when everything feels too heavy. You wake up and wonder, what’s the point? You try to do the right thing, to keep pushing forward, but it’s like shouting into a void full of nothing but emptiness. No one hears. Nothing changes. And slowly, you start to feel powerless. I’ve been there. Sometimes, I am there. Life feels like it’s happening to me, not with me. And the thought creeps in: Should I just give up? Why does it have to be this hard? But every time I get close to that edge, I think about them. Those girls who should be living their dreams right now, writing songs, dancing, laughing, performing freely for the people who love them. Instead, they’ve been thrown into a situation no one should have to face. And yet… they didn’t run. They could have chosen silence, or complied. Who would blame them for wanting peace, for craving a normal life? But they chose something braver. Of course they must have moments where they want to give up. They’re human too. Who wouldn’t want a normal, peaceful life? Who wants to wake up every day to pressure, uncertainty, and twisted narratives? I’m 100% sure, at some point, each of them has thought, “Why am I not just a regular person?” But they chose to fight. Not just for themselves, but for their dreams, their freedom and... For us. And that, to me, is powerful. Because if they, in the darkest of times, can still hold on, still stand tall, still sing and smile through it all, then maybe I can too. Maybe we all can. I know, I might sound over-exaggerated, but they truly are my motivation. Every single morning. And I have nothing but ultimate respect for what they’ve chosen. To stand up when they could’ve stayed silent, to walk through the fire instead of running away. It’s not easy. It’s unimaginable, really. But their courage reminds me that even in my own small, quiet battles, I’m not alone. If they can find the strength to keep going, then maybe, so can we. We’re all on this unpredictable ride called life, filled with twists, drops, and moments we never saw coming. But sometimes, the ones who inspire us the most are those who simply refuse to give up. Knowing that these girls are still fighting, with grace, with honesty, with love, gives me hope. And maybe that’s what we all need right now. Just a little more hope. You don’t have to be perfect. I graduated!!! I earned a Bachelor of Arts in... Sociology with a concentration in Psychology, summa cum laude! Five years ago, I started this journey with an eighth-grade education, and even that was from a Scientology school, where critical thinking was discouraged and the quality of instruction was subpar, to say the least. I did not get here alone. Thank you to NYU School of Professional Studies and Angie Kamath. Thank you to everyone who supported me, encouraged me, and believed in me, especially on the days I was not sure I could do this. And there were plenty of those days. To my therapist, who told me not to give up when I was told I likely would not be accepted into a prestigious program. To my tutor, without whom I likely would have given up at the harder points along the way. To all those here who have sent me loving messages on social media. And to everyone else who has cheered me on in person through the ups and the downs of it, it means more than I can put into words. It got me over this finish line of being a student again and graduating. That goal once seemed impossible. To those who have asked me, “Why this? Why now?” I pursued higher education to reclaim a piece of myself. When you come out of a high-control group like Scientology, or even a high-control family, there are parts of you that were never allowed to fully develop. Those parts include your curiosity and your ability and right to question. Education was discouraged because knowledge creates confidence in your ability to trust your own mind and navigate the world. That leads to true independence, and that would never be allowed. I wanted that back. But more than that, I needed to understand. I needed to understand how my mother could have us join Scientology when I was just eight years old, and how my family and I could be part of something like this and stay in it for so long. I needed to understand how these systems work, how they influence people, and how they take hold. Without education, access to real information, and support, people can fall into systems that work against their best interests. Some assume that because they are educated, even highly educated, they would never fall for something like this. But it turns out that is not necessarily true. What many of us are impacted by, but never quite understand, is how high-control groups operate. Many still do not understand how misinformation spreads, and how tribalism and radicalization shape what we think, what we believe, and who and what we trust. Without that awareness, none of us are immune. Today, we are seeing how these forces can influence good people and distort reality. History has shown us that this is not new; it just comes in a different form now. Social media connects us in ways we never imagined, but it also creates echo chambers that reinforce beliefs and justify behavior without question. Real critical thinking is hard when we are fed so much by algorithms designed to appeal to us. In learning and achieving this milestone in my own life, it has helped me take a good, hard look at my own beliefs and ideologies. This journey was about healing for me, but also about figuring out how to help others in whatever way I can in the future. So what is in my future? I am considering continuing my education and possibly pursuing a master’s degree, with the goal of contributing to advocacy and policies that protect people, not systems. I finished Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, found all collectibles, and... completed all the secret bonus stages. My honest review: -The combat system is incredibly smooth and elegant -Every move is fully controllable, jumps are precise, and combat is fast and brutal -The default difficulty feels perfectly balanced – challenging but never unfair -Checkpoints are well-placed: you’re never set too far back, and respawning is immediate -The level design is diverse and creative, often ending in tough, sometimes screen-filling boss fights -Boss fights are true highlights – intense, demanding, and incredibly satisfying -After a while, I fell into a pure "destruction flow": anticipating enemy moves, zoning out, fully immersed -The level design contributes massively to this feeling – thoughtful, tight, and perfectly tuned -The pixel art is among the best I’ve ever seen – fluid, rich in detail, and beautifully animated -The sound design is equally impressive – the clash of blades sounds absolutely satisfying -On top of that, the soundtrack is a total banger – easily one of my favorite soundtracks of the year -The overworld is clean and intuitive, showing you clearly which levels you’ve completed and what collectibles are still missing -Long-time Ninja Gaiden fans will spot several clever nods to earlier entries -Action-packed set pieces break up the gameplay and add cinematic flair – a touch I really appreciated -The ability to switch characters in certain situations adds variety and depth to the gameplay -The normal difficulty is, in my opinion, perfectly tuned – but for those craving more, there’s a hard mode -On hard difficulty, enemy placement, level layout, and boss arenas are reworked to push your skills even further -Beating levels on hard was seriously tough – but the satisfaction of overcoming them was unmatched -Technically, the game runs flawlessly – I didn’t encounter a single bug throughout my entire playthrough -The secret and bonus stages are very well hidden and genuinely fun to search for -Collectibles can be used in a shop to buy new gear, talismans, and upgrades -However, I didn’t find the talismans particularly impactful – they didn’t change the gameplay much for me -I just wanted more – more levels, more content – but that’s just nitpicking Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is unquestionably one of the best indie games of the year and my favorite title from The Game Kitchen, which says a lot. Ninja Gaiden 2D returns with a bang and continues the Year of the Ninja in spectacular fashion — a comeback we won’t be forgetting anytime soon. Since my account is somewhat anonymous I’m going to... disclose where some of the California high-speed rail money gets wasted. 99% of you don’t realize where giant chunks of the money is disappearing to. The California high-speed rail authority, literally owns thousands of parcels of land that are in various stages continued litigation, tenant improvements, eviction, and constant maintenance. For example, there are many homes and apartment complexes in the plant path that have been purchased years ahead of construction. Removing those tenants is a slow and expensive process. (let’s ignore the extra stress on housing that all of these destroyed properties are causing) In some cases, these are low rent apartments with a lengthy eviction process During that process, the state of California is the landlord and has to maintain the property codes the same as any other landlord. This means repairs, adding smoke detectors, fixing roofs, vegetation management, landscaping, paying off tenants to leave early, boarding up Windows, constant trash cleanups, towing vehicles etc. But the High Speed Rail Authority doesn’t just have to maintain these properties at normal cost. Every single bit of that work has to be done at California prevailing wage rates. The work can only be done through qualified contractors that have passed through a long series of idiotic mazes to qualify to perform the work. An average rate per hour (charge rate) for a worker to perform any service on these properties is approximately $200 an hour for labor only. The cost go up for specialized work, like electricians, plumbers, or machine operators. Properties that are literally worthless are being maintained at huge expense just so the next round of homeless transients can break into the property and cause more damage. For reasons I can’t explain, the process to finally demo and remove the structures takes years. I’m only mentioning the tip of the iceberg regarding my firsthand knowledge. Completely separate from those outlandish costs are the inflation caused by the construction. The prevailing word on the street is that nothing is getting done. The truth is that a lot is getting done and none of it efficiently. The amount of concrete being poured daily and monthly to build gigantic overpasses for both the rail and roadways is not understood. In these work areas, every concrete mixing company is fully scheduled out and cannot offer building materials for other basic services such as building a house often times for weeks when the average lead time for many of these services used to be one day. And that’s just the schedule, never mind the huge cost increases from straining the supply chain and Labor pool. The amount of concrete and steel that has gone into the structures so far is massive. Dozens and dozens of new water wells have been dug just for dust control. Thousands upon thousands of acres of highly productive tree fruits and nuts have been torn up and shredded. Utility scale solar fields have been uprooted and sometimes relocated at extravagant costs. Every type of business you can imagine has gone through either a closure, relocation, or a long-term tenant agreement with the rail authority. In some cases, it’s just a buyout where the business closes its doors forever. The owners get something all of the workers get nothing. Don’t get me started on how thick the layers of bureaucracy are for these minute tasks that occur on all of these properties. The inefficiency is far beyond your wildest dreams. In many cases, this is not related to fraud in any way it’s just absolute ignorance, red tape, and failed leadership. I can go much deeper into specific examples, but I think that gives some of you an idea of what’s actually happening in California. If a rail is ever usable, some portions of the structures will be decades old and already in disrepair.show more
