Have you ever seen something like this? Check out... this visualization of water flowing through rivers in the Lower Mississippi Valley as thunderstorms meandered through the region over the last 24 hours. The Streamflow products included with the MRMS suite from NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory provide a one-of-a-kind way to visualize the evolution of heavy rain and thunderstorms. Streamflow - or how much and how fast water is flowing down rivers - is represented in units of volume per second and is available from 3 different water balance models: CREST, SAC-SMA, and Hydrophobic. NWS Meteorologists use these products to monitor the risk of flash flooding. You can access the full suite of FLASH products from MRMS on WeatherFront!show more

Major Storm to Impact Southern California As of Wednesday,... February 12, 2025, at 6:50 PM PDT, the latest infrared satellite imagery confirms that the incoming storm system is fully developed and on track to deliver severe weather across Northern and Central California tonight into early Thursday afternoon. The system is intensifying rapidly, with a powerful surface cold front expected to sweep through San Luis Obispo to San Diego counties, bringing damaging winds, torrential rainfall, and the potential for severe thunderstorms. Key Storm Impacts: "Big Thursday" – A Major Weather Event • Extreme Rainfall Rates – 0.50 to 1.5 inches per hour, increasing the risk of urban flooding, flash floods, and mudslides, particularly in burn scar areas of Los Angeles County. • Damaging Winds – Southerly gusts of 45-65 mph, capable of toppling trees, damaging weak structures, and causing widespread power outages. • Severe Thunderstorm & Weak Tornado Potential – The latest HRRR model data (18Z, 0Z) indicates the presence of a squall line, increasing the risk of isolated severe thunderstorms and weak tornadoes between 12 PM and 10 PM Thursday. • Scattered to Widespread power Outages – Areas at risk include the San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, Ventura County, and portions of Los Angeles County, where infrastructure could be severely impacted. • Urban Flooding Concerns – Locations such as Downtown Los Angeles, Pasadena, Altadena, and Pacific Palisades will experience rapid runoff and potential roadway flooding, creating hazardous travel conditions. The Seriousness of the Situation This storm is shaping up to be one of the most intense weather events of the season, posing a significant threat to life and property. Residents in Los Angeles County and surrounding areas must prepare for prolonged heavy rainfall, high winds, possible power outages, and dangerous road conditions. Authorities urge residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and prepare emergency supplies. Those in flood-prone and burn scar areas should be especially vigilant for potential debris flows and flash flooding. This is a rapidly evolving situation and further updates in the next 24 to 30 hours. #CAwx #CaliforniaStormsshow more

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day feature the most impressive... severe thunderstorm setup I’ve seen along the California coastline in at least a decade. The first round of isolated severe thunderstorms will come ashore tonight, bringing the threat of a isolated tornado and severe wind gusts over 60 mph from the Central Coast up to Humboldt County. The severe weather threat then expands into the Central Valley during the afternoon, California’s tornado alley, with the potential for isolated tornadoes, damaging winds, and even large hail. The threat then shifts south into Southern California tomorrow, where isolated severe wind gusts and a brief tornado will be possible. However, Christmas Eve into Christmas morning features the most potent severe weather environment of the week and could lead to a severe thunderstorm outbreak along the coastline from the Central Coast up to the North Coast. The combination of strong low-level and deep-layer shear with sufficient instability is rarely seen in this part of the world. I seriously cannot recall seeing Significant Tornado Parameter (STP) values exceed 3 along the California coastline. The peak threat window appears to be from 10 PM Thursday to 8 AM Friday. It would not be out of the question to see a Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued Christmas Eve night with the potential for a couple tornadoes and scattered severe wind gusts. I also believe this may be the first time on record that San Francisco has been placed under a Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms in the Day 1–3 NWS Storm Prediction Center Convective Outlooks.show more

🇵🇭 PHILIPPINES BRACES FOR ANOTHER SUPER TYPHOON Just days... after Typhoon Tino wrecked Cebu and killed over 200 people, another monster is on the way to the Philippines, and this one’s aiming for the island that holds Manila. Typhoon Fung-wong, locally named Uwan, is spinning with winds up to 185 kph and could slam into Luzon on Sunday night. The last storm left half a million people in the dark, with power outages across central islands that could take weeks to fix. A storm of that magnitude will likely tear through the nation's capital, where millions of people are barely coming to terms with the last typhoon. Source: Reutersshow more

Storm of the century: the US paralyzed by winter... storm Fern A vast part of the United States has been hit by one of the most powerful winter storms in the past 100 years. Blizzards, heavy snow and freezing rain have forced the cancellation of more than 13,000 flights nationwide. The severe weather is expected to last for several days, according to Reuters and the Associated Press. By the evening of January 24, more than 139,000 customers were left without electricity — and the number continues to rise. The hardest-hit states are Texas and Louisiana. In New York City, the bodies of three people who died from exposure were found on the streets — two men aged 67 and about 30, and an elderly woman. President Donald Trump approved a federal state of emergency in 12 states — from South Carolina to West Virginia — and urged Americans to “stay safe and warm.”show more

⚠️A POWERFUL Bomb Cyclone is set to slam Europe... on Thursday as it tracks through the English Channel, bringing Heavy Snow, Strong Wind, and Rain. 💨 Hurricane force Wind Gusts are possible along parts of the French coast, with wind gusts expected to exceed 70mph as the storm rapidly "bombs out". ❄️ On the back side of the storm, Heavy Snow and Blizzard Conditions could develop across parts of England, as cold air wraps in behind the system and winds absolutely CRANK. ⚠️ This is a high impact, fast moving storm, capable of producing major travel disruptions, power outages, and dangerous conditions across multiple countries. Normally, I stick to US Weather, but this will be a very impactful Storm for our European Brotheren so I thought it was worth covering. Heads up my European Brotherenshow more

BC, here’s the next update on the unusual bomb... cyclone situation, on Nov 19th. (Scroll for wind forecast) The low pressure system - which is currently roughly 3,200 km SSW of Vancouver island - will race southeast over the pacific during the next 36 hours, while growing rapidly. But the weather system truly becomes problematic as it turns northeast Tuesday morning, where it will completely devour the low in the gulf of Alaska. The storm will explode in intensity, and as pressures plummet near the centre of the storm, winds will explode to numbers more typically seen in tropical cyclones. At this point the storm will be a major bomb cyclone, and will obtain peak intensity by late afternoon or early evening, roughly 400 km west of Vancouver Island. Peak intensify: • Max wind gusts: 185km/h • Min pressure: 944mb Yet the low casts uncertainty over parts of the BC south coast. Northern and western Vancouver island are likely to be impacted with very high southeasterly winds, but southern and eastern sections lay in a zone filled with possibilities. Despite that, I have gathered together the latest data, to create this forecast ⬇️ • Western Vancouver Island: Peak wind gusts 80 to 110km/h, except up to 140km/h near Brooks peninsula provincial park. Timeframe: Tuesday afternoon, through Wednesday. • Northern Vancouver Island: Peak wind gusts of 90 to 120km/h. Timeframe: Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday night. • Eastern Vancouver Island: Peak gusts of 70 to 100km/h. Timeframe: Tuesday evening, again gusting up to 90km/h near Comox on Wednesday. • Southern Vancouver Island: Peak gusts of 70 to 100km/h Tuesday evening, highest winds over western sections. Timeframe: Tuesday evening, with winds reaching-strengthening early Wednesday near the Haro Strait. • Sunshine Coast - Sechelt to Powell River: Peak gusts ranging 70 to 100km/h. Timeframe: Later Tuesday evening lasting into Wednesday. • Lower Mainland: Peak easterly wind gusts of 40 to 70km/h except southeast up to 90km/h near the Strait Of Georgia. Timeframe: Tuesday night - and into Wednesday near the coast. Prepare for power outages and travel delays. Secure lose objects. Another update will be posted Monday, Nov 18th. #BCStormWatch #BC #BCWind #Storm #BombCyclone #BCBombCycloneshow more

Morning Update Focus: North Georgia down to the Metro.... Last night behaved about as expected. Lighter precipitation fell across a wide footprint that was affected by CAD. This wide footprint was well forecasted by the NWS as you see the footprint still slightly past I-75 and south of I-20 on the early run of the radar. We have maybe a lull in precipitation, though I doubt it will be a complete lull before the line of thunderstorms and yes, thunder-ice moves through the area stacking ice totals quickly. The warm nose will slowly begin to lift north and eastward, however as you see portrayed by the 10z HRRR, the areas that are CAD prone never rise above freezing (I’m gonna hold off on gloating about calling that one cause it hasn’t happened yet), while the heart of the line pushes through. This is going to be interesting I’m about to get outside and check. I’m expecting to see around .25-.40 already in Lumpkin County. But let me get the morning going (coffee!)show more

In July 2017 at Panama City Beach, Florida, a... powerful rip current swept two young boys out to sea. Their mother, Roberta Ursrey, and other family members swam out to help, but all nine quickly became trapped in the current just yards from shore. Beachgoers spotted the desperate situation and sprang into action. What began as a few people linking arms grew rapidly into a human chain of 70 to 80 strangers. Some anchored the line in shallow water while others extended it farther out. Jessica Simmons grabbed a boogie board and swam to the exhausted family, helping keep them afloat until the chain reached them. After more than an hour, the group successfully pulled everyone back to safety. Ursrey’s mother suffered a heart attack during the ordeal and a nephew broke his hand, but remarkably, all nine family members survived. It remains one of the most inspiring examples of strangers uniting to save lives.show more
